What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“There are two primary reasons we see early access as a more substantial process compared to the typical:

(1) Early access in steam allows players to directly support the game development process, providing key insights to help tailor a unique and strong experience for the player. This symbiotic relationship between game developers and the player base keeps the project grounded to meet expectations and deliver a desired outcome.

(2) Early access provides players an opportunity to financially support the project, allowing for development to continue and achieve the projects potential. This is a passion project and we will do everything we can to bring this to the finish line ourselves, but any support is appreciated and helpful.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We intend for the game to be released as soon as the base content is completed; we anticipate this should be 12-18 months from release into early access. It is our goal and intent to release high quality content as fast as possible, to expand the experience for the player quickly.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Project Gunship in early access will provide the player with a small variety of scenarios and game modes to thoroughly test the game mechanics and flow of gameplay. Assuming there aren’t any major changes to these mechanics resulting from player testing, the primary difference between early access and a full version is content. We have plans on releasing several content packages that contain maps, assets, and scenarios from specific conflicts throughout the history of the AC-130. These would include conflicts in Vietnam, the Middle East, South America, and Eastern Europe.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently, the early access version provides limited playable content as foundational systems are developed to support the future of the game.

At the moment, there are several game modes that can provide a player at least 2+ hours of gameplay. These include:

  • Realistic Scenarios - These are dynamic scenarios that put the player behind the sensor to provide close air support in realistic scenarios. his includes a variety of different types of scenarios including air interdiction, troops in contact, and point defense. As AI is unpredictable, these scenarios can dynamically change from game to game allowing unique experiences each time.
  • Zombie Rush - This is a point defense game where the player prevents zombies from killing friendly forces. There are several different variations with multiple difficulties.
  • Training Range - This is a sandbox style game mode that allows the player to spawn enemies to their hard content. This is a useful mode to get comfortable with the controls in the gunship.

With much of the foundational work being completed as of build update 0.6, primary focus going forward will be on scenario creation.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes and no. The early access low price will remain the same into release but will only include the base game and content. Additional DLCs (featuring new content and conflicts) that are added later potentially will be offered at a low cost as well but would need to be purchased in addition to the initial base game purchase. Our intent is to keep pricing low and modular, allowing more players to have reasonable access to the game, while giving them control over which content they continue to purchase.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“So far, this has primarily happened through our community discord server and steam discussions. We are active in both these platforms and have already seen substantial improvements due to positive player feedback.”

About This Game

Project Gunship is a single-player, simulation game that provides an authentic and immersive AC-130 Gunship experience. As gamers ourselves, we’ve often desired an AC-130 Gunship simulator that authentically modeled their combat deployments and we simply got tired of waiting. Far too many times we’ve only been granted a simple taste of this type of gameplay, but Project Gunship’s intent is to be the go-to for historical AC-130 Gunship combat.

It is important to acknowledge the fact that the Project is in an Alpha state, as it is in early access. This means current features are limited and improvements are occurring daily. We’ve made some great progress since release but have a long way to go before we can call this project finished. Many players have already contributed solid feedback that has helped us guide development and we’ll forever be grateful for their contributions and continue to seek good feedback to ensure the project achieves its potential.

Some of the key features of the game include:
  • Stunning Visuals – By utilizing the Unreal Engine 5, experience the realistic perspectives of the Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) thermal camera as you observe and engage hostile targets.
  • Realistic depictions of AC-130 Variants, Weapons, and Munitions – Fly in the original AC-130A “Project Gunship” variant utilizing the 4x GAU-2/A 7.62mm miniguns and 4x M61 Vulcan 20mm cannons or the active AC-130J “Ghostrider” variant utilizing 1x ATK GAU-23/A 30mm Autocannon, 1x M102 105mm Howitzer, and multiple wing-mounted AGM-114 Hellfire missiles. Project Gunship allows the player to customize their experience to meet their expectations.
  • Immersive Audio – Feel the subtle roar of the (4) Rolls-Royce Turboprop engines, radio chatter from the crew, and pound of the weapons firing in support of the troops on the ground.
  • Dynamic AI – With the goal of replay-ability, AI is not scripted but allowed to make decisions in response to their given circumstance. This reactive AI allows scenarios to play differently each time and helps paint a realistic picture for the player.
  • Unique Game Modes – The goal of Project Gunship is to provide a variety of game modes that all can enjoy. The game currently features realistic scenarios and point defense style modes.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Graphic violence and gore are a common occurrence in Project Gunship. Throwing high explosives at soft targets tends to dismember and since we were able to replicate the infrared camera view well, game footage often looks very realistic and comparable to real world combat footage.
