What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“SIM Chef is almost a one-man project. The game is playable, but on my own I can't see where people get stuck or what's too easy or too hard. Early Access is how I find that out and make the game better with the people playing it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I don't have a date for the full release yet. It depends on what players find during Early Access, and I'll update this answer when I know more.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“More dishes, drinks and furniture, more game modes and a lot of balancing. What gets added, and in what order, depends on what players tell me along the way.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“You can already play from an empty lot to a full restaurant. You build and expand the place, set up the menu, hire your staff, buy ingredients and look after the money, and over time you get visits from judges and win awards. It still needs polish and balancing, and you'll find bugs.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The price will likely go up step by step as the game gets more content.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“There's the Discord and the Steam forums, and I read what you send there. If your idea makes it into the game, your name goes in the update notes.”

About This Game

You run everything here: what goes on the menu, who works in the kitchen, what to order from the supplier and how much to charge. At the end of the day, the customers tell you if you got it right.

You start on a small, empty lot. Put up the walls, pick the doors and windows and fill the place with tables, stoves and fridges. Set up your bar with a beer tap and an espresso machine. Paint the walls, choose the colors of the furniture and hang a few pictures. When the money comes in, buy the lot next door and grow.

There are more than 200 dishes and drinks to learn, from feijoada and moqueca to jiaozi, poutine and a proper cappuccino. Learning a dish costs money, and it only comes out right if someone in the kitchen knows how to make it. Same with drinks: no bar and no bartender, no caipirinha. You set the price of each one and see what it costs to make.

Post a job ad and the résumés come in. Every candidate has a level, a country, the dishes and drinks they make best and a few traits, and not every trait shows up in the interview. Hire cooks who fit your menu, bartenders for the bar, waiters for the dining room and a janitor so the floor doesn't turn into a mess after a busy day. Unhappy staff quit, and firing someone costs severance.

People walk by on the sidewalk, and some come in because they're craving a dish you serve. The ones who stay leave a rating, and some post about your restaurant. The report card shows what pulled your score down: the wait, the dish or the variety on the menu. Keep the score up and the judges start showing up, the food magazine gives your place prestige, and then the awards come.

Pick your staff's uniforms and the plates the food arrives on. Together with the wall paint and the furniture colors, every restaurant ends up looking like the person who built it.

Running the business

Ingredients come in different qualities, from frozen to fresh, and you order from the supplier or set up a standing order. Every day ends with the till closing, and when money gets tight, the bank lends you some, with interest. Upgrades open new ways to run the place, like craft beer at the bar and a tablet for the waiters to take orders. You can play it by making the place look great or by squeezing every cent of profit.
