What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Nokai is a large, ambitious action-adventure game built by a solo developer. Early Access gives me the chance to polish core systems, gather feedback on combat, progression, and world design and ensure the full game is shaped by real player experience. We want players involved as we expand the world and refine the experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 12 to 24 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version includes all core features, full co-op, and the first 6 major zones. It offers around 15 to 30 hours of main quest gameplay plus optional content. The full release is planned to expand the world from 6 to 8-12 zones (depends on content density), with additional content, quests, and endgame systems.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access build is stable and playable, with 6 finished zones, ships, combat, camp building, quests. Players can explore, fight, sail, and progress through the early stages of the story either solo or in co-op.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to raise the price as we hit full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We’ll actively gather feedback through Steam forums and Discord. Player input will directly impact balancing, tuning, and which features or zones we prioritise next. Player input will be critical to making Nokai reach it's potential!”

About This Game

Seven hundred years

After a mysterious calamity drowned the world, you wash ashore with no memory. Storms rule the sky, twisted wildlife stalks the beaches, and rusted machines rot beneath the waves. With little more than a broken ship and fragments of a forgotten past, you begin a journey north, sailing from island to island in search of answers.

As you push farther into the unknown, you'll uncover the remnants of a lost civilization, piece together the truth behind the calamity, and discover the ancient evil poisoning the ocean.

Nokai is playable solo or online co-op for 1–5 players.

Build and upgrade your ship to reach places you couldn't before. Improve its capabilities to push farther into the world and survive increasingly dangerous waters. Move freely around the deck, manage the engines, and man the cannons and harpoons as you fight through storms, hostile creatures, and dangerous ocean encounters. Work together with your crew to keep the ship moving, defend it from threats, and make it safely to the next island.

Create a character that plays the way you want. Shape your stats, develop your abilities, and experiment with different weapon classes and elemental magic to create powerful combinations. Equip armor and gear with unique properties, discover better equipment as you explore, and tailor your build to suit the way you want to play.

Discover handcrafted islands, each with their own challenges, secrets, and stories. Explore distinct biomes shaped by unique environmental conditions, encounter new enemies and hazards, gather local resources, discover forgotten places and lore from the drowned world, and meet islanders who live by their own routines and priorities.

Survive the world together in 1-5 player online co-op. Explore dangerous islands, sail as a crew, and work together aboard your ship to keep the engines running, man the cannons, and overcome the threats ahead. Combine different weapons, elemental magic, and abilities to form a crew that fits your playstyle.

Prepare carefully before pushing into the unknown. Set up camps to establish footholds and unlock crafting and faster travel, gather local resources to upgrade your gear, and keep your ship repaired, fueled and your supplies stocked. The farther you venture, the more preparation survival demands.

There's always something else to find, even beyond the main adventure. Take a break to fish the waters, tame horses and other pets, search for hidden treasure, and discover the many smaller activities, side quests, secrets, and surprises scattered throughout the world.
