Mortal Crux is an action RPG set in a sprawling medieval world. Alone or with a party up to 4 players, venture from the warmth of your cozy cottage and explore a mysterious frozen land. Take on quests, meet eccentric characters, and survive brutal combat in this homage to ARPGs of the early 2000s.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The scope of Mortal Crux is huge, so Early Access will be ideal for continuing to build the world with the help of player feedback. Expect new items, quests, locations, features, and general polish. As a solo developer, having community involvement will be immensely helpful to improving the overall quality of the game in the long run, especially for the co-op/networked portion of the project.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“At least a year. Depending on the size of the community and player requests/feedback/interest/funding, potentially much longer.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Much more content. Being an open-world RPG, there's a ton of potential for expanding the size of the game before release. Including additions to the following:

  • Expanding the game world with more regions/areas to explore.
  • More weapons/armor/items/interactions.
  • More NPCs and quests.
  • More random AI events in various areas.
  • General updates and bug fixes as necessary.
  • More features, options, and quality of life improvements as needed.

Essentially expect updates adding content to and improving the game world and general experience.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access build will feature the following when first available:

  • One major content-rich overworld region.
  • Singleplayer and online co-op up to 4 players.
  • Interior locations and undergrounds to explore.
  • Non-linear quests with player choice affecting outcomes/rewards.
  • Full NPC schedules. Shops close after hours, characters sleep and go about daily life.
  • NPC interactions with dialog trees and a barter/merchant system.
  • Customizable player home with interactions/activities inside.
  • World interactions such as fishing, mining, and digging.
  • Melee combat with light/heavy attacks, blocking, rolling, and dashing.
  • Full gamepad support. Currently tested with an Xbox 360 controller.
  • Swimming mechanics, complete with underwater exploration.
  • Several weapon/armor/item types.
  • Magic spells/casting mechanics.
  • Day/Night cycle.
  • Weather system.
  • Wildlife system.
  • Realistic AI alignment: Roaming characters of different types will attack each other based on their creature type/alignment. So predator animals will hunt prey, bandits will target villagers, orcs will target all humans etc.

While it's difficult to list every feature due to the size of the Early Access build, I hope the afore mentioned ones give a good idea of what to expect.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“There will likely be a small price increase on the finished product, but probably not by too much.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Listening to feedback and improving the experience based on player input. Especially in regard to the game's multiplayer component. Please post any feedback and report bugs here in the game's Steam forum. For regular news and development updates, please follow the project on Twitter @MortalCrux where I'm most active.”

INSPIRATIONS

Mortal Crux features my favorite bits from all sorts of games and medieval fantasy, while focusing the core design around the aspects I enjoy most in an RPG. I've been gaming my whole life and working various jobs in the industry for the past 10 years. My original vision for the project was first created as a long-lost flash game by the same title about 15 years ago. It looked closer to an old Westwood Studios CRPG than the current re-envisioned version that's had the benefit of years of modern influences and tech advancements.

Aesthetically franchises like Baldur's Gate, Diablo, The Witcher, Dragon's Dogma, and The Elder Scrolls (specifically Morrowind's Bloodmoon expansion from 2003 and Skyrim) have all inspired the style greatly.

Gameplay-wise the combat is very much action-oriented with mechanics you'd find in a Souls game, but from an aerial view. The interior system takes on an entirely separate set of influences, featuring cinematic fixed cameras reminiscent of the classic Resident Evil games. I wanted to give every room a more intimate feel while exploring, instead of keeping the camera zoomed out and toggling rooftops off like most top-down games tend to do. Doing so also helps make the experience more artistic and personal, since every room becomes its own little scene to investigate.
