What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“AFTER is technically complete, and we are adding content to round-out game play:
  • more neighborhoods and tiles
  • more environment interactions and sub-games

Maybe most importantly (to us), AFTER is designed for Easter eggs--there are already a few in game, but during the Early Access period we will be happily adding any community suggestions along with bugfixes and planned updates.

Share your ideas--there's a good chance they'll make it into the game! The more ridiculous the better, honestly.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“AFTER is planned to be in Early Access for three months. A new neighborhood is targeted for release bundled with updates addressing bugs and incorporating new ideas.

Really, if there's something you'd like to see (that isn't extremely difficult to model and code) there is a very good chance it'll make it into the final game, so don't be shy with ideas.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The current development goal is more content:
  • more neighborhoods and tiles to play in
  • more environment interactions

Additional ways to escape that are in the works:
  • Escape by hot air balloon
  • Escape through the underworld
These escapes will involve additional interactions, as well as additional tiles.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“In the Early Access version there are five fully playable maps:
  • Crown Hill
  • Woodhurst
  • Southbridge
  • Capo Beach
  • Industry City

There is also a Free Play map in which the player cannot die.

The map system creates a semi-randomly generated layout every time a map is played, so a given neighborhood is never exactly the same!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“AFTER is being offered at a 20% discount during Early Access”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

About This Game

Game Play

AFTER is an urban escape/exploration/survival game with original music by Brian Ring.

You are alone in a large city after an event has depopulated it. All you have to survive in the ruins are your two hands and the left behind junk of the city—scrounge for food to keep yourself moving while you find ways to get out of town: power the train, launch a rocket, or find less obvious ways to escape.

...Or just explore!

Whatever you do, be quick about it, because the sun is setting ...

Neighborhoods

The city is divided into neighborhoods of semi-randomly placed building tiles. As you explore, the city builds itself in front of you—and takes itself apart behind you!

The city is not entirely unpredictable, though: certain features like train lines, canals, expressways, and others will appear at predictable intervals or in the same spot—it's up to you to map them out.

If you find a bed, you can use it to go to sleep and save your game (as well as whichever tiles are on screen).

You will find that certain items will tend to spawn in similar locations: you can most often find a flashlight in an apartment bedroom, for instance.

Day and Night

The sun rises and sets; a full day lasts twenty minutes. Nighttime can get dark, so it's a good idea to have a flashlight on hand! And beware, at night the streets may not be entirely empty...
