What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“As this is an edutainment game, there will be a tough balance between education and entertainment. Early Access will provide me valuable feedback as to what works and what doesn't work.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I plan for two months, but that's a very rough guess. I will extend it if I have a crazy new mechanic I want to implement for the quality of the game.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to add the following to the full version:
NPCs
Storyline
One more map with its own mini game
Something to incentivize the player to try the other kana system. (People tend to stop after Hiragana)”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“There are 10 replayable lessons and 4 tests for each kana system.

Players must unlock these lessons one by one, or skip the lessons by passing the tests.

On the side, there are 6 mini-games. There is an untested New Game+ mechanic for added difficulty. It's untested because I'm thoroughly repeating the first playthrough for maximum effect.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I plan to gradually raise the price as I add new content and features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I will try out having a discord server. With it, I will have polls, questions, and a constant lookout for player streaming playthroughs for more insight. I will also pay attention to the Steam forums.”

About This Game

JPN Burst is an introductory game to Japanese. In the game, you must learn and type the presented Japanese characters to proceed.

Japanese Writing System

The Japanese writing system is composed of Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Instead of A to Z, Hiragana letters range from あ (a) to ん (n). Katakana will also range from ア (a) to ン (n). You will use the English equivalent (Romaji) to type these letters. Fun Fact: Most Japanese people use the same QWERTY keyboards as everyone else.

Features

  • Learn Japanese!
  • Typing Action! Your enemies are flashcards and your keypresses are lethal. Annihilate thousands of flashcards with your typing prowess.
  • In-Game Help! If you are stuck on remembering a certain kana, have no fear. You can use the in-game tools to get hints and answers. Or you could just mash your keyboard.
  • Re-Playable Lessons! If you need to go back and review, you don’t have to backtrack to another part of the world map. All lessons are available through the menu.
  • No Pressure Mode! If you feel like the challenges are too hard, you can take your time in No Pressure mode, where there are no time limits.
