What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Little Hats is a solo indie game project made by me, Tim Venekamp. I have been working on the game for well over two years now and feel that the game is now ready enough to go on Early Access. My total vision for Little Hats is very big and because I work alone I have decided to develop the game in parts so that the game is already fully playable when the first part is finished, otherwise, it would take an eternity for me to finish the entire game, and an eternity before anyone could play it. I would not be able to work on it for ten years, full time, without funding. Early Access will enable me to keep working on the game using the profit that it makes. Right now the forest part of the game is almost complete, it will now require real player feedback to improve it and get rid of any bugs. Once this is done I will start working on the second part of the game, which I call the lowlands part, this part will be the biggest, and I plan to release it in stages, with the first part planned to release this December.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“My well-educated guess is somewhere between one and two years, but game development often brings many unexpected problems, which is why I cannot say for certain how long, it will also depend on how much I end up adding to the grand vision of the game, and how much things players want me to add to the game.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will be way more improved based on feedback from Early Access.

Here are some of the things that I plan to add to the full version:

  • A bigger map, I plan to expand the map way beyond what it is right now, the majority of the game is actually supposed to take place away from the forest and the mountains, I also plan to add a big cave update that will add dungeons and cave networks into the world. As well as an underwater update, making the underwater landscapes more interesting.

  • Expanding upon the crafting systems, adding new materials to build with.

  • More NPC's, I plan to add in many more types of animals and magical creatures in the new and existing parts of the world, with more interactions and abilities.

  • Better Animations, my animation skills are very limited and I hope to eventually learn to better animate or hire someone to improve the games animations.

  • Better AI, the AI will be smarter, improved, and able to do more things, for example, humans will be able to interact more with the world, by having jobs and tasks that they will be doing.

  • More vehicles, I plan to add more types of boats/ships, bikes, and more, for the player to drive around.

  • A potion/magic system, to give the player special abilities, like temporarily becoming as big as a regular human, or to run very fast, to name just two.

  • A farming system, allowing the player to make farms next to their little settlements to get more and better food

  • A creative mode allowing the player to build in total freedom in a separate world

  • A custom soundtrack, I would really like to have a custom soundtrack made for Little Hats, if the game becomes popular enough for me to afford this

  • Steam trading cards and achievements

  • New types of buildings, more towns, villages, and cities in the new parts of the map.

  • More varying props throughout the world.

  • A better story, I hope to find enough time to improve upon the story and the lore of the world with each update.

  • Possibly a CO-OP mode or something similar, yet I can't make any promises, my first goal is to complete the game for singleplayer.

I will focus on one thing at a time, and make the current version of the game as perfect as possible before I will start adding in other things.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The basis of the game is almost done, it will now only need to be improved upon. Here is a small list of things that are currently in the game:

  • You are already able to explore a large open world.

  • Building, harvesting, and crafting.

  • Trading and economic system, you are able to trade and sell certain items inside the game.

  • Surviving, the survival mechanics are completely done.

  • Follow the basic story, which will improve and unfold as the game receives its updates

  • AI, a big number of NPC's are already walking, flying, or swimming around in the world of Little Hats, Gnomes, Humans, Trolls, and a bunch of animals, just to name a few.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“This depends on how much I will be able to realize the grand vision for the game, if the final version has twice as much content and twice as much work done on it as the Early Access version, then I think it is only fair to increase the price a little.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“As stated above, because I am a solo indie developer, I don't have the resources and time to test the game extensively, this is why I will use feedback from the community to improve the game. This way I can focus all my time on improvement rather than testing myself. I am also always open to new ideas and things the community would like to see added to the game. I will use Steam to communicate with the community and also the Little Hats discord server, I recommend joining if you are interested:

About This Game

Little Hats is an open-world survival game mixed with RPG elements, in which you play as a Gnome! Set in a magical world, you will have to survive, build, and explore, in order to discover the secrets of the forest and the many lands that lay beyond. The game focuses a lot on, gathering resources, building with a system that allows the player to be creative, and exploring, going on quests in many beautiful landscapes, as well as large human buildings, towns, and cities.

Little Hats now also has a Passive Mode for the really young players, which will disable all monsters and scary creatures.

Early Access
Please know that the game is still in a very early stage and that you will more than likely encounter bugs and glitches while playing. For more information about early access, please read the section above called Early Access Game.

Bugs and Glitches
If you find the time, please report any bugs and or glitches that you find through Steam, or by sharing them in the discord server so that I can fix them, thank you very much! A link to the Discord server can be found in the Game Info section usually located on the right of this page.

Open World

Little Hats offers a big, hand-made, open world that will be expanded as the game grows. The game starts in a magical forest near a mountain range, where everything is relatively safe for Gnomes, but as you progress through the game you will have to journey further and further away from the forest into the low lands. This is where the majority of the game will take place. You will have to find, and talk to Gnomes and other creatures to receive quests, trade, upgrade and learn new abilities, in order to make progress. Beware of the Humans! some of them might help you but most will not, it is better that Gnomes remain secret to them. Most of the animals however will be happy to help you and bring you somewhere.

Singleplayer, Co-op
Right now I am developing Little Hats as a single-player game. I would however like to add in a Co-op mode at one point in time, I cannot make any promises yet because my first priority will be to finish and perfect Little Hats as a single-player game for the PC, it will also depend on how well the game sells, and how many players it has.

Dutch Culture

This game is mainly inspired by Dutch culture, yet it will not be a one hundred percent accurate representation of the Netherlands, or of Dutch culture during a specific time in history. Rather it will be a new fantasy world with Dutch culture from a number of different time periods blended together, in combination with classic fantasy elements.

Dutch Folklore
The most important piece of Dutch folklore used in this game is, of course, the Gnome. Besides Gnomes, there are many more magical creatures and legends from Dutch folklore that will make an appearance in the game.

So what about those mountains?
Those who have basic knowledge of the Netherlands, or have been there, will tell you that the Netherlands has no mountains at all, and that is absolutely right. This is where my inspiration from Anton Pieck and other artists comes into play.

Anton Pieck
Anton Pieck is a famous Dutch artist, most well known for his amazing drawings depicting old nostalgic scenes, mainly from the Netherlands, but also from various other countries and cultures. He is also well known for his depictions of fairy tales and his work for the Dutch theme park the Efteling. You will find that a lot of this project has been inspired by his drawings, in particular, the Gnome towns and the mountain landscapes.

Gathering, Crafting, Building

Building things is another big part of Little Hats. With a unique building system, you will be able to build a house brick by brick, or, plank by plank! Unless you would rather just place one entire wall at a time, you can do that as well, on top of that you will also be able to disable and enable the snapping feature, which will allow you to snap the objects right next to each other, or place and rotate them completely freely any way you like!

As the game progresses, more materials and resources will be added, and with it more craftable objects to build with. I will listen carefully to the player and improve the building system based on their feedback. My goal is to give the player many options, and a lot of freedom to create amazing things.
