Was die Entwickler zu sagen haben:

Wozu Early Access?

„I think right now, with the state of the world, having a simple option for playing tabletop RPGs online was a priority for me, and I hope a lot of others; as such, I'm developing and releasing Dudes on a pretty tight time-table, although stability is pretty solid these days, there are sure to be some lingering issues exposed by a larger audience, and I may have some work to do on the public hosting side depending how popular this gets.“

Wie lange wird diese Software ungefähr den Early Access-Status haben?

„I'm hoping to wrap up the polish and detail work I have left to do, and possibly transition to a more sustainable hosting solution before leaving early access. This should be reasonable within 2021 with my current schedule.“

Wie soll sich die Vollversion von der Early Access-Version unterscheiden?

„The final version of Dudes won't be drastically different from what's on offer today. My goal with this project is to bring a different approach to running an online TTRPG, and going too far with feature creep is something I am vehemently against.

I'm likely to spend a fair amount of time polishing the existing systems in pretty subtle ways, and I plan to expand by offering some subtle features to help improve communication, immersion, and reduce brain-drain for DM's.

Fair warning: I have no intention of adding features that are based in large part on specific systems. Dudes on a Map is designed to be played with books you own, and as such won't be digitizing those dusty tomes full of rules and stats. The cornerstone of Dudes design is that leaving these sorts of features out promotes flexibility for DM's in popular RPGs and makes it much easier to maintain features needed to offer equal support to more niche systems.“

Was ist der derzeitige Stand der Early Access-Version?

„Dudes on a Map can be used today to play a full RPG campaign today. If you're able to host peer-to-peer game sessions (port forwarding or UPnP), this is likely a nearly complete product. If you're using the public hosting, it's possible that there will be some disruptions to service, as the current solution is not very scalable.“

Wird diese Software während und nach Early Access unterschiedlich viel kosten?

„The full feature set of Dudes on a Map will be available for free throughout much of early access; this project was a bit of a passion project, and I'd much rather see it help some folks through a difficult time than get rich on it, so I plan to offer the Game-Master DLC as a pay-if-you-want option shortly after launch, and through most of 2021, as I'd like to provide an easy and free option for any who are struggling or just curious but hesitant to invest in trying something new.

Once Dudes leaves early access, the Game Master, and only the Game Master will need a copy of the DLC in order to continue running games, the Game Master DLC will not increase in price after early access.

Players (i.e. not the game master who prepares the game) will always be able to use Dudes on a Map for free.“

Wie werden Sie versuchen die Community in den Entwicklungsprozess miteinzubeziehen?

„I would love to hear players tricks for keeping a tabletop RPG running smoothly, especially if you think they would fit well into a digital game, or if you've got ideas on how Dudes on a Map could help games run smoothly, then I'm all ears.

Do be mindful that I've got a pretty strong desire to avoid adding complex features that will slow down play (or setup) or are too specific to one game system; there are a lot of cool features in other platforms that I plan to avoid, but some do provide interesting ideas.“

Über diese Software

NOTE: Dudes on a Map's full feature-set is free for the duration of early-access. Game Masters need not purchase the 'Game Master' DLC upon release, but it will be required upon leaving early access. The DLC will however be available as a pay-if-you-want way to support the development of Dudes during early access.

Dudes on a Map aims to be the easiest way of taking ANY Tabletop RPG online, and works great for digital mapping at the table as well. With a streamlined set of tools for sharing maps of any kind, along with streamlined automation for managing initiative, a customizable dice systems to support a variety of game systems, and a minimalistic approach to both player and non-player characters in the system.

This feature-lite approach to online play may seem barebones when compared to similar systems, however it also affords the Game Master a much more flexible approach to running games, by not locking the game into any specific rules-systems or stat blocks, and letting you simply tell the story you want to tell without investing time and money learning how to work with API's, huge configuration blocks, modding, map triggers, complex lighting and on and on.

The feature-lite approach also means that the user interface doesn't need to cram in all those extra features, making it much easier to learn and much easier to find the things you're looking for in the midst of the game. This lighter interface also allows for things like multiple players sharing a device (or the whole party even) , hybrid games where some players are present at the table while others join via the internet, viewing a second screen of the DM's (or one of those sweet tabletop-TV's), or streaming the player window to a mobile device to reveal the map as the players explore.

  • Simple system to turn any digital image into a playable map for any tabletop RPG
  • Flexible design keeps the GM in charge, not the computer.
  • Easy to learn for the GM and the players
  • Players setup takes just a few minutes, no special preparations for digital-play. Paper sheets work just fine here.
  • Digital images can be converted to playable, gridded, maps in minutes once you learn the ropes, including features to match existing grids on your image.
  • Map anything: dungeons, cantinas, countries, continents, planets, star charts, or concept-maps.
  • Support for square grids as well as horizontal and vertical hexagonal grids, or use a simple distance scale, or no scale at all.
  • Targeted automation to keep online games running smooth without overloading the GM
  • Customizable dice system supports numeric and symbol-based dice.
  • Simple initiative system minimizes the time it takes to run combats and supports a number of options for standard and symbolic dice.
  • Works well on low bandwidth connections (but maps may take some time to send).
  • Connect the way you want: self-hosting, LAN, (*experimental) public servers, or single-PC (for mapping at the table) are all supported.
  • Own your data. Nothing stored online, no content limits, no arbitrary player limits, no accounts. No up-selling.
  • No subscription fees planned for public servers (IF they are added, they will be the minimum needed to cover costs)
  • Independently developed, I'm a solo-dev who just wanted to make playing online easier.
