What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“It is still in development and I haven't implemented all planned features yet.
But the basic functionality is given and overall it is stable enough to use.

My goal is to have a very simple to use and lightweight app to enhance your desktop experience.

Not only should it be used for animated GIFs on your desktop, but also should be recognized as a productivity tool for creative people.

But before this status is met, I thought it would be a good idea to release it in an early access state.

I have a clear vision of the final release state of Desktop Panels, but I can never be sure if it is the best when nobody is using it. This app should not only meet my expectations and visions after release but also those of the community. Therefore a small Community around it would be great to collect feedback, tips, and bug requests.

Overall, an early access version will help a lot in the development process.
It will help me to have an overview of the app and how it is performing on different setups.
I can prioritize Bug and feature requests easier while developing.
And of course, it will speed up the development process until the completion of the app.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“I have a full-time job and can only work on it in my free time.
One of the main goals is to have a working Steam Workshop implementation.
Also, other private projects of mine can gain priority depending on the situation.
Therefore I try my best to release it in Q2 2023.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Release Versions should have plenty more features because
it is currently not in a state to call it a "productivity tool" yet.

Desktop Panels should enhance the entire desktop experience.
With Desktop Panels I want to reach out to the Gaming, Anime, and Streaming industry but also the creative people like Artists, Developers, and other Content Creators.

The following features and changes are planned for the release:

  • Sticky panels to attach to windows.
  • Instant panel creation for folder content (e.g. screenshot folder).
  • Saving of multiple configurations.
  • Sharing of configurations (Steam Workshop).
  • More useful UI
  • Small settings window for each panel.
  • Changing the speed of the gifs.
  • Some functions to help with corrupted gifs.

Note: At the time you are reading this some of the features may already be available.

There will be probably more and more to consider while creating these features.
Especially the feedback of the community.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current state of Desktop Panels is a stable-enough version that provides some functions.
The current features are listed in the "About this software" section below and also on the Desktop Panels Website (click on "visit the website" on the shop page)”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I don't have any plans for changing the price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Even if there is a lot to implement and less time for me to develop I am always willing to collect feedback, ideas, and bug reports while developing.
