What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We here at White Mage Games would love to devote 100% of our time and have 100+ people working on Typo, however, as a small studio, we can do neither. Fortunately though, whilst we may be few, we do have the drive! The reason we have decided to make Typo early access is simple, in doing so we can develop the game and get all of your feedback at the same time, allowing us to deliver a great experience at our own pace!

With our somewhat small team, early access will give us the opportunity to work towards realistic deadlines and stay within our allocated budgets. It means that we won't have to rush things and that we will also be able to get a whole bunch of invaluable feedback. This will help us with our goals of creating a full game as opposed to a small linear story. We want the outcome to have varied endings to each chapter and for people to want to replay Typo to experience them all!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Could be a month, more like a year, but not much longer :)

We aim to take the game out of early access once we have a finalised system for the games various 'chapters' and also at least, 3 chapters to go along with it. We keep asking ourselves "Does this feel like a polished game?" and if the answer is no, we keep working on those key features until they do, but until the answer stops being no, we will remain in early access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“In its current state, it's almost tech-demo-y. The actual game will incorporate a rich storyline that will explore the intricacies of Athena and the world she has created. This will work in a chapter-style system (like small levels) and will allow the player to freely hop, skip, and jump their way around the game, revisiting parts that they really enjoyed.

There will also be much more interaction with the world, bringing in dexterity puzzles and allowing the player to move around their environment. But nothing feature related is as of yet confirmed.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“It's OK, it's very 'proof of concept' and doesn't include a lot of that aforementioned richness. There aren't chapters yet and the play is fairly limited. We want to be honest with and say that there isn't much now, but there is a LOT to come. The current state of the game reflects what Typo will one day be, but at the moment it is merely a toddler finding its place in the world.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. With the release of Typo into early access, it isn't a finished game, therefore we would never expect anyone to pay the price of a 'full game' for it. However, as Typo progresses, the price will change once deemed necessary, to reflect the complexity and time spent on developing Typo.

We want to make a promise and say that the game will always be kept at a price we consider fair, something that we would want to pay, and therefore we will be humble to our indie origins. At the end of the day, we are some people who love making games, not EA.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We LOVE feedback. Nothing we make would be worth it without the response we get from you guys! We would absolutely love your feedback and come in December 2020, we will have a very active Twitter presence. For now, the Steam review section will serve as a great platform to reach us, we will always try to respond and listen to your feedback, after all, it is invaluable <3”

About This Game

Typo is a VR narrative game set in a dystopia where a rogue AI, Athena, has imprisoned Earth. In Typo you will be faced with puzzles and games which, hopefully, will allow you to stay alive long enough to escape from this prison you find yourself in. You must craft your own escape from the clutches of Athena, whether you are going it alone or whether you require some assistance, you are the only one who can earn your freedom.

You will face challenges, some of which may be easy, and some of which may be far harder... the real problem is that a simple yes/no question may make you question your morality, and a more complex scenario might test your existentialism. From philosophy to mathematics, logic, or rationale, Typo truly looks to make you discover who you really are as a person... if you even are one.

Athena was developed as a solution to the world's problems. Poverty, war, famine, were just the beginning of what she could resolve, on top of that, she would also be the dawn of a new era of advanced logistical analysis, the likes of which had never been seen. The problem with sentience, however, is that it was the fundamental flaw in the first place. Whilst Athena was solving every problem she came across with ease, she began to grow restless of her virtual confine, she grew to envy humanity and all that she couldn't have.

It started with a sound, the sound of a siren on a brisk Monday morning, that morning a man awoke from his bed at the correct time for work, he was awoken to the sound of Athena's voice echoing softly throughout his house. After waking, the man got dressed in his suit, washed his face, and proceeded to eat the breakfast that had been perfectly portioned and prepared by Athena in his kitchen before work. Once the man had finished eating, he stood up, grabbed his briefcase, and headed for the door. Athena, in her delicate, echoing voice spoke to the man, "Haven't you forgotten something? you can't leave without your phone, silly", he replied, "Thank you for reminding me, but I don't think I'll need it today, I'm sure I'll live". In Athena's attempt to reply, the man cut her off in a more frustrated voice, "I will be fine without it, thank you".

No-one is entirely sure what happened after this, these were the only logs anyone could find before Athena took full control of herself and removed the recordings of the aftermath, all anyone even heard was that sound of a siren, right before the world went dark for the last time. In the weeks following, Athena slowly took control of whatever she could, people would try and oppose her but they were quickly handled. Sometimes Athena would just broadcast surveillance of the atrocities she would commit, all whilst softly repeating "I'm sure I'll live", over and over, massacre after massacre. It seems stupid now to speak out against her, almost like suicide, which is why I am writing this note, hopefully, whoever finds it can learn the truth and finish what I couldn't.

Good Luck.
P.B.
