What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I am a solo developer, making a engaging single player campaign with exciting battles, and adding multiplayer modes is a huge task. The core game mechanics are complicated but they are in good shape so far. I want to add as much content and stability to the game as possible. I will be constantly improving Rise of Piracy based on player feedback and reports.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I plan to release early versions incrementally for approximately one year. I began development in 2018. Since then the project has gone through many iterations. As most systems have been completed, I am confident that with your help, feedback and critique - a 2022 release is very achievable.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I will continue to improve every core system of the game to provide the smoothest gameplay experience possible, offline and online. Here is a list of some in progress tasks, that I plan to have available at release:
  • More ships to choose from and fight
  • Ship customization options
  • More Enemies and improved behaviors
  • More Factions and improved behaviors
  • More Islands
  • More Biomes
  • Continents
  • More land battles
  • Larger fleet sizes
  • Boss fights
  • Fully destructible buildings and island contents.
  • Conquest modes
  • Online PvP modes
  • Online Cooperative Survival
  • Drop in / Drop out multiplayer modes.
  • Permadeath/Ironman mode
  • Campaign Customisation
  • More languages support with Steam Workshop integration

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Rise of Piracy's current state is mostly stable, with limited maps and game modes. There are a few bugs here and there that are not game-breaking, and all have workarounds. There is 10 playable ships, and 5 enemy types. There is 5 crew unit types and 20 building types. Building destruction is limited to towers and walls.

The multiplayer implementation is solid so far, with most systems already implemented. More are planned for the near future as we progress through the final iterations of the Campaign Map.
PvP and Coop modes require a very different set of dependencies and because of this, I will be releasing initially with only PvP.

Single Player

The campaign mode is in development now. A fog of war system is in place, AI behaviors are defined and some implemented, a map layout for the initial campaign has been drawn, and the artwork is making good progress. Encounters, faction behaviors, simulated battles and missions are still works in progress.

Language support

Currently only English is supported. Some of the groundwork is in place to localize everything visible within the game though.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The base price will remain the same throughout Early Access. There will be a 40% discount at launch, but then discounts will only be 10% during the rest of development.

After Early Access the price will reflect the quality of content delivered. I do not plan to have any DLC currently. I would much rather increment the base game in free updates.

If you are happy with the current price and you'd like to show your support, please come aboard!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“All methods listed here are how you can get in touch with me directly. Also, I will be keeping a close eye on the community page here on Steam, and the comments sections. I promise to read everything you guys write, consider every piece of feedback. You have my enormous gratitude for your interest and help making Rise of Piracy as great as it possibly can be.

I have an active Discord: with around 200 members currently. I will continue to grow this discord and remain active. Any questions or feedback you would wish to communicate directly can be shared there. It is also a place where members of the community share their own projects, look for teams and find the latest news.

I also have a twitter that I update regularly with features of the game showing screenshots, videos, gifs and highlights.

I have streamed most of the development of Rise of Piracy on twitch:

About This Game

Rise of Piracy focuses heavily on progression and growth. In your campaign, you will first be given a small ship and a handful of coin. Complete missions and find treasure to build your economic strength and relations with the other factions. You can also choose to fight, boarding or sinking other vessels for loot. Build up your fleet of ships and their crews to take on the most challenging tasks such as capture islands of various strength and composition. Defeating large colonial fleets in grand scale naval warfare. Hunt pirates or long lost treasures. Uncovering mysterious lands filled with dangers as you go.

Hundreds of hand-crafted environments, no procedural generation. Everything in Rise of Piracy is carefully crafted to be a new experience and challenge. Fully destructible environments and buildings allow you to level an island from afar via bombardment with your fleet. Talk to mayors of settlements and captains of fleets to uncover hidden lands, or find them yourself through exploration and investigation.

Piracy is optional. Choose to trade with over 200 commodities that can be found scattered around the world. Ports with specialized trading routes and dedicated merchants to trade with. Add trading ships to your fleet to maximize your transportation potential. Build relations with other factions to increase your trading effectiveness. Engaging in war, hunting bounties, or seeking hidden treasures are also viable means of building your bank.

A deep diplomacy system allows relationships to grow between all factions. Engage in diplomacy with every faction you meet. AI factions will go to war with one another and their assets will change hands. Changing the balance of powers can impact your play-style, increasing warship activity, and blocking trade routes.

Fill your fleet with over 30 playable ships from 1600 - 1900, from the light and fast Carousel to the tremendous firepower but limited maneuverability that comes with the 120 Gun ship of the Line. Taverns provide a great place to hire crewmen for your fleet. Fill your ships with specialized crew. Use them to board hostile ships, or invading and capturing islands to secure passive income. Hostile actions will have consequences amongst the factions - fleets of pirate hunters are constantly seeking bounties. Campaign difficulty will grow dynamically and remain challenging no matter how strong players get.

Take to one of the arenas to battle in team based or individual combat. Sink your enemies using a choice of ships with varying strengths and weaknesses.
