What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are bringing this game to Early Access because, as a Roguelite, we have the opportunity to build and balance it alongside our community. Gunnhildr is already a solid first-person shooter based on our own original story line, which is told mainly through voice over narration. We are bringing Gunnhildr to Early Access so that we may receive feedback, make sure the game is as fun as possible and know which direction the community wants us to take with the project. What we build is dependent on your feedback, and we'll be paying attention both here and over on our Discord channel.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Our plan is to fully launch Gunnhildr once both our team and community are happy with the project as a whole. We want to polish what we currently have and make sure our development coincides with the direction the community wishes the project to take. We expect full launch to occur in 2021.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The current game includes a tutorial, one full area (Niflhel), and one boss, Garmr, Hel's watchdog. An average run takes around 20-30 minutes. We also have four guns, dozens of powerups, loads of other pickups, room rewards, grenades, and a snarky narrator. There's lots to discover even with the game in its current state!

For launch, we are planning to have more weapons, powerups, item types, additional main areas to explore, and the narrator will also be expanded until the full story is completed. These will be trickled out over the course of early access so you'll be able to sample everything the game has to offer even before it launches.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable from start to the end of the first main area. Each level is randomized, composed of carefully constructed rooms to provide as many unique configurations as possible.
Weapons and grenades are upgradeable through Powerup pickups - clear rooms, defeat enemies, and clear challenges to gain minor powerups. You can also acquire new weapons or grenades with pre-installed Powerups that have a significant impact on their behavior, making the choice between two shotguns more than just "which one has bigger numbers"! We're fans of the looter-shooter ideal, and want every weapon drop to be interesting.

As an example you could begin a level with an assault rifle, find a shot gun and then find lightning, rate of fire, recharge, increased damage, and split/bounce-shot powerups. There are also Active Skills to find, such as the Grappling Hook that increases player mobility and also adds combat functionality in being able to pull and damage enemies.

A single run of the current level can take about 20-30 minutes, and loops back to the start after you die or defeat Garmr. As this is a Rogue-lite, this is a feature that will stay even at launch, and the threat of Permadeath will always linger.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We intend for the game to receive a small price increase with each major update during Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback has helped shaped our game from the very beginning. We've used our Discord as an open development communication tool so fans can see what all member of the team are working on at any given moment. Our Steam community will be set up in much the same way as we engage with players, share what we're building, and incorporate their ideas to make Gunnhildr an even better product.”

About This Game

Raw Halite, essential for life on Niflheim, is running out, leading to pollution and a dying world. The leadership bicker amongst themselves in a deadlock of conflicting solutions, until finally, they decide to call on Asgard for aid. Gunnhildr, the the only member of the Warrior class to become an Ancient, is sent to beg before the Gods, but they reject her. Unable to accept refusal, Gunnhildr challenges the Gods themselves in an effort to win their respect. She is defeated. The Gods spurn Niflheim as a parasite on the Nine Worlds, and shatter the Bifrost, isolating Niflheim from the other worlds of Yigdrasil forever. The Three Primes declare Gunnhildr to be "The Damnation of Niflheim," and sentence her to an eternity in Niflhel. Her escape is where our story begins…

As Gunnhildr, you'll embark on a journey across Niflheim through dynamically generated dungeons, with an arsenal of weapons and otherworldly powerups. Gather Halite crystals from fallen foes and scattered outcroppings to restore your shields; buy items for your survival; and keep your weapons cool. Listen to stories of old Niflheim in between battles as your benevolent guide, Lucky, helps you escape the dark chasms of Niflhel. Every run is different, every gun is upgradable, and everyone is waiting for you to free them from the Primes' grasp.

Fast-Paced First Person Combat

Using your fists, grenades, and - of course - guns, travel through the realms of Niflheim and defeat the legions of the Primes. Gunnhildr features a vast collection of weaponry. As you venture deeper, you'll find individual powerups to boost their effectiveness or give them magical properties. You'll also find brand new weapons with powerups pre-applied. The choice is yours to switch over to the new gun or keep the one you've been working on.

One Resource

Halite powers everything. It is the source of life in Niflheim. You'll find Halite scattered around the world, and enemies will drop it when defeated. You'll use the Halite you collect to restore your shields, cool down your weapons, unlock treasures, and spend at the shop. When you die, you'll bring back most of the Halite you've collected in order to upgrade your abilities further at the Pensieve.

Narrative

The lore of Niflheim is vast and Lucky knows it by heart. While you're busy scavenging for treasures and finding your way through Niflhel's labyrinths, Lucky will regale you with different legends from Niflheim's history. When the fighting picks up, he'll automatically cut himself off to let you focus on what you're doing. The storytelling structure builds context for the world and your actions as you build up your rebellion against the Primes.

Roguelooter

Roguelite mechanics abound as you explore a randomized world with dozens of different rooms, dynamic weaponry, challenge rooms, resource management, and permadeath. New weapons and items drop constantly, giving you the chance to either juggle your loadout around or build up the one you've got.

Always Growing

Gunnhildr is a living product. We're committed to growing the game throughout Early Access, adding new weapons, items, abilities, worlds, metagame features, and more as we move steadily toward launch.
