What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Open Hexagon is in active development and requires a little bit of extra polish before it can be officially released. Your feedback and ideas are greatly appreciated!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be officially released in August.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Mostly polish and minor features. Ensuring that the game works well on all platforms, that accessibility settings are available, and that stability and performance are optimal.

Online capabilities (e.g. leaderboards and Steam Workshop integration) and a replay system are also planned features for the full version.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Open Hexagon is fully playable and supports all modding capabilities. In detail, this is what the Open Hexagon already offers:

  • 20 built-in levels, each one with unique mechanics/patterns.
  • 20 songs from these amazing artists: BOSSFIGHT, Dunderpatrullen, Fantomenk.
  • Multiple in-game profile creation and management.
  • Extensive set of settings and customization options, from all the basics (resolution, FPS limit, VSync) to level-specific tweaks such as difficulty multipliers;
  • Full support for user-generated content, thanks to Lua scripting. Users can create their own levels and share them with the wider Open Hexagon community.
  • Many existing custom-made levels created by the Open Hexagon community for an earlier version of the game, which are compatible with the Steam version.
  • Access to the source code of the game, for educational purposes or to contribute features and improvements.

For more information, please refer to the "About This" section below.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, the price will be the same.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community will be (and already is) involved with (1) open-source contributions to the game's codebase, with (2) suggestions, feedback, and bug reports, and (3) custom level creation. All communication takes place on the official Discord server:

The Discord server is also the right place to share and find custom levels, provide feature requests and bug reports, and make new friends!

Community involvement during Early Access will allow Open Hexagon to be polished to perfection, and provide an opportunity to introduce new features (either game mechanics or new scripting functions) that will increase the game's fun factor and longevity.

One of the main aspects of the game that the community will have a huge impact on is how "pure" it should be: with a scripting language like Lua, pretty much anything is possible, as long as the game engine exposes the right hooks. The community will steer the direction of Open Hexagon to either a pure arcade shape-dodging experience or to a platform that allows users to create more unique experiences.”

About This Game

Open Hexagon is a fast-paced and adrenaline-inducing arcade experience by Vittorio Romeo. Designed for moddability and custom level creation.

Open Hexagon is easy to learn but extremely hard to master. There are three main actions you can perform: rotate clockwise, rotate counter-clockwise, and swap by 180° degrees.

If you want to beat the hardest levels, you'll need impeccable timing and precision.

Simplicity and minimalism are key features of Open Hexagon. While certain levels might have special quirks and mechanics, the goal is always the same: survive as long as possible.

Challenge your friends and family (or yourself) for the highest possible survival times.

Headbang your way through polygons by listening to the absolutely amazing chiptune and bitpop tracks by artists such as BOSSFIGHT, Dunderpatrullen, and Fantomenk.

You'll want to keep listening even after you're done playing - that is 100% guaranteed.

The main idea behind Open Hexagon comes from the excellent "Super Hexagon" by Terry Cavanagh. However, Open Hexagon expands on formula by introducing a 180° swap mechanic, curving walls, accelerating walls, scriptable levels and much much more.

Whether you're a veteran of games like Open Hexagon or new to the genre, you'll find something fresh to spike up your adrenaline.

Open Hexagon was developed with the goal of being open. Players can create their own custom levels by using the simple yet immensely powerful Lua scripting language. The amount of freedom that level designers have is unprecedented: you can keep your custom levels simple, or go wild and implement brand new mechanics.

If you have never used a scripting language before, Open Hexagon can be a great (and fun) introduction to programming.

Play the game the way you want to. Speed up or slow down levels. Change the colors and the way the environments are rendered. Open Hexagon gives players the freedom to customize their game just the way they like to.

If you want to take it one step further, you can also modify the game engine itself as it is fully open-source.

Open Hexagon has been around for a while. Many players have spent countless hours becoming masters of the game or building incredibly creative custom levels.

Become part of a growing community by sharing your achievements or by turning your crazy level ideas into reality.

The development of Open Hexagon is far from finished. While the game is fully-playable and all major features are implemented, there is a lot of room for improvement. Contribute to the evolution of the game with your feedback and suggestions, and keep an eye out for upcoming features such as online leaderboards, rich presence, and new scripting possibilities for level designers.
