Every run in School of Magic is about building a new hack and slash character from scratch, but the level system is a deckbuilding card game. With each level, your spell pool grows and mutates into a unique skill tree, leading to outrageous broken builds.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I chose Early Access because I want players to be part of the journey while the game is still growing. The foundation of the game is already there, but I know it can be pushed further with community feedback. During the beta I noticed that players respond in very different ways, and I want to take that into account as I shape the game. Early Access also helps me cover the costs of development so I can keep working on it and make sure it reaches its full potential.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“My aim is to keep the game in Early Access for around half a year. That should give me enough time to add the remaining content, polish the balance, and respond to player feedback before the full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“For the full version I plan to expand the game with another world and the final boss. I also want to add more variety to bosses and enemies so that runs feel fresher and more challenging. In addition, I plan to add more spells to broaden the possible builds and give players new strategies to explore. I am also working on improving controls, with WASD movement already in and the possibility of gamepad support if players want that. On top of all this I will keep focusing on balance and polish to make the overall experience more complete.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version already includes the first two worlds, the pirate world and the dungeon. All three schools of magic are available, but not every spell is in yet. The core systems are playable and in place, and I will continue adding more content and refining the balance as development goes on.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Price will not change when we leave early access”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to do regular updates during Early Access and keep players informed about what I’m working on. Feedback will play a big role, and I want to use the Steam forums and Discord to listen to the community and bring their ideas and suggestions into the development process.”

About This Game

What if Diablo was a deckbuilder?

School of Magic lets you create a new character every run and carve through enemies for loot and power.

Leveling is its own deckbuilding system:

  • At each level one card disappears

  • The rest grow stronger

  • Three new ones are added

Do you play it safe or push your luck for something bigger?

The result is a unique skill tree in every run.

Before each run, you don’t pick a rigid class — you build one yourself. By assembling a spell deck, you decide which abilities can appear, almost like crafting a personal Magic deck. This freedom adds a whole new layer of metagame strategy to the deckbuilding genre. Every decision shapes not only how you carve through hordes of enemies, but also how you’ll survive the bosses that push your build to its limits.

School of Magic brings its world to life as you experiment, fail, and try again. Every run unlocks new cards and new story fragments, so even defeat pushes the tale forward. With endless combinations and broken builds waiting to be discovered, no two runs will ever feel the same.
