What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“This is a massive project I've been working on since 2015 (look up Super Clash Bros, the fangame version of this project). I'm a one-man team so I'd like fans involved as much as possible during development, for sharing Workshop content, feedback on the tools and help playtesting.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“1-2 years.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Here's what I'm mainly planning to add during Early Access:
  • Many more characters (I have several other characters playable in the fangame version, they just need to be converted to the Steam version)
  • In-game Workshop browser
  • Much better level editor with many different enemy types
  • Adventure mode
  • More abilities & items for each character
  • More modes and options

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Very early. The currently there's only 3 playable characters, a few default example levels and 1 enemy type.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I really don't know. Most likely it will only get lower, so if you're on the fence about buying you should wait until it's out of Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“In every way I can. If you've been following development of this project all these years you know I'm very active on Discord in discussions and occasional play sessions.”

For Workshoppers

Currently there's not much content in the game by default. During this phase you're expected get levels and characters from Steam Workshop.

About This Game

  • Retro characters - Based on classic 8-bit games mainly from the NES, each with different controls, abilities, physics, health systems, and item/inventory systems. This isn't like Smash Bros where all the characters have a unified control scheme. Instead, I've meticulously kept them very similar to their inspirations, so the Jump Bro character has a run button and loses his powerup when hit while the Gunner character has 8-way aiming and can get the spread gun, etc. But they're not total clones as they each have improvements and new abilities.

  • In-game editor & Workshop support - Import your own graphics, music and sound effects. Create levels, tilesets, and character skins. Share it all via Steam Workshop.

  • Adventure Mode - The plan is to add a campaign with levels from each of the character's worlds. Currently there's only 2 default adventure levels but you can get more from the Workshop.

  • Battle Mode - One-life rounds with a focus on items. Each character gets their own items/upgrades from the item spawn points. Characters can even have different item spawn rates, so weaker characters can trigger item spawns more rapidly, and vice-versa. Also, in 3 or 4 player free-for-all battles there's rubber-banding: the losing player can get more items/better items with the opposite for the winning player.

  • Play online with Steam's Remote Play Together, or locally on the couch with friends.

  • Full gamepad support - I playtest the game with my old NES & SNES controllers from the 90's.
