What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We believe that reaktron offers a great core mechanism that can interest a wide range of player types. If you happen to be one of them please share your thoughts with us, so we can fine-tune the game mechanics and extend reaktron according to your feedback. We hope that we can commence a community-driven journey to make reaktron the great, timeless gaming experience we believe it can be.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Currently, we estimate the process of completion to take about 9 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Throughout the Early Access period, we plan to add a lot of extra content. Currently, we would suggest to add

New game modes

  • a multiplayer mode that includes options for a user-defined gameplay. This will make it easier for you to play this with your farther or your 7 years old niece - or both. In addition, we can learn much more about the way you want to play this game.
  • a cooperative online multiplayer mode: join forces with all local players to compete online.
  • a challenging single-player mode in which players experience and learn to use reaktrons to solve puzzles at their own pace.
  • a "tronement" mode that supports an easy organization of online or offline tournements.

More content

  • 22 new types of reaktrons to reach a total of 31 (yes, EXACTLY 31!) with multiple levels each - resembling a skill tree that players can unlock during online matches.
  • additional rules/mechanics such as an inventory system that allows you to collect and trigger any combination of reaktrons.
  • two new forms of puzzles: labyrinth and pixel pandemonium.
  • improved bot behavior adjusted for players of different skill levels.

AI interface

  • AI interfaces for two leagues - "classic AI" and "replicant" - so that users can create their own bot and let it compete with others online.

General improvements

  • a steadily improved UI/UX.
  • additional language support.

Gimmicks

  • a table-top mode that allows you to play reaktron like a board game.
  • a selfie-option: get creative and use your own images as puzzles.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“You can play an online multiplayer mode that includes a subset of 9 types of reaktrons for any combination of up to 12 local or remote players per match. A more detailed list of all implemented features is provided in the section "About This Game".”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will be increased once we will have added a significant amount of content and both we and the community think that reaktron is ready to launch as a full version.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are eager to learn about your thoughts and ideas concerning reaktron. Join us on discord (https://discord.gg/rUGAN6e) to discuss these with us. Whether you can think of a creative new type of power-up - ups, sorry - reaktron, new ways to balance and play this game, or any other ways to improve the game - we would love to integrate your suggestions.”

What to expect

Today marks the next big step in the development of reaktron. We are confident that the game has reached a pretty stable state with lots of game mechanics to allow for an interesting learning curve. Of course we expect bigger player numbers to give us data and feedback to balance things in more detail.

Starting today you can play online within our matchmaking system using keyboard, mouse, gamepad and smartphone. As every player shares the same screen content there can be multiple players on one PC.

You can expect a release every other week with release notes posted as Steam announcements right here. We plan to keep a steady output of fixes and new content. If you want to talk with us or get more behind the scenes info about the game and the development process please join us on Discord (see https://reaktron.com).

We have a lot of great ideas for the Early Access phase and have already started implementing them, so stay tuned.

Thank You :steamhappy:

About This Game

reaktron is a snake game. Minimalist. Fast-paced. Multiplayer. Online. Couch. Powerups. EVERYTHING!

Sometimes, you need to reinvent the wheel

reaktron is much more than an ordinary snake game! According to one of the developers - a slightly confused German neuroscientist - you could call it a psychophysical experiment that completely simulates the so-called broesel-physics. But then again, who cares?

With reaktron we tried to improve on a widely unknown minimalistic C64 game, which has been described as "one of the best multiplayer games of all times on all formats!" (Lagerfeldt, 2003-06-21). Easy-peasy. So we

  • slightly extended the game mechanics.
  • made it a couch-online-multiplayer game - quite a rare type of game.
  • added the option to easily join and play via smartphone (no app required!).
  • added power-ups, including the infamous and technically challenging REVERSER (it's time-warp mechanism makes reaktron probably the most complex snake game ever).
  • and suddenly started to call power-ups reaktrons (WTF?!).

Early access features

Currently, a combined local and online multiplayer mode (there should be an established word for this. We propose the term "remocal" multiplayer game) lets you experience the game mechanics as follows:

  • play with up to 12 (remote or local) players per match.
  • play two types of levels: battle royale (survive or escape) and puzzle (unlock reaktrons).
  • play a match of 48 rounds and collect the highest score to win.
  • occasional puzzles spice-up the game and let you unlock up to 9 reaktrons (we could just say "power-ups" - but we don't!).
  • unlock various Steam achievements.

Our mutual vision

Even though we have this plan of how the game might look like in the future, we'd be thrilled to get more people involved in the development of reaktron. Be a part of our community on discord, report bugs, tell us your wishes about the game and suggest extraordinary effects for new reaktrons (our way to say "power-up" - did we mention this already?).
