What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“After running a closed beta test for almost half a year now we think that Early Access is a chance for many more people to experience flyingshapes° before its commercial release. We intentionally start with this Early Access version to learn from our users: How do you use our VR-CAD and which additional features would help you to be even more successful and satisfied?”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“flyingshapes° will be in Early Access for a few months. We will post updates with respect to the actual release and updated/added features during that time.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“During Early Access flyingshapes° is available for everyone, also for commercial use. We will constantly improve and add new functionalities in response to the feedback given by our Early Access testers. Use this chance: The more feedback you give, the better flyingshapes° will match your use case.
After the release, flyingshapes° will be commercially available in different versions, plus there will always be a free version for non-commercial use.
The final release version will feature extended diagnostic shaders and support features for designers as well as more advanced CAD operations such as trimming. From a user interface perspective the release version will also bring more advanced precision tools to support CAD modelling steps beyond the concept phase. As we plan to implement a subscription model, we will keep adding new features also after the commercial release. This comprises but is not limited to a collaborative modelling and review function inside the VR environment, more CAD formats for import and export, extended cloud features and version control plus PLM integration for a future professional version.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“flyingshapes° is very stable and is used in production by many users already. Nevertheless many additional functions will still be added over time. The current version supports sketching, curve construction and surface modelling in VR as well as virtual taping (see the manual and tutorials for instructions). Basic CAD features such as extrusion and manipulating geometry are also already included. Export for 3D printing and export to STEP for usage in other CAD tools as well as importing prepared packages in STL and STEP file formats are already supported (the latter via drag and drop on the application window). One diagnostic shader to help the user check the surface smoothness is provided in the Early Access version.
Even though we try very hard, we cannot guarantee that everything always works 100% so if you come across any unexpected behaviour, please let us know - our support team is very responsive and happy to assist you.”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“During Early Access flyingshapes° is entirely free for commercial and non-commercial use. After the release there will be a pricing scheme that we will announce soon. Non-commercial use will definitely stay free but if you use flyingshapes° for your work you will need to sign up for a paid plan.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are looking forward to learning from our community. We have tailored flyingshapes° to boost the workflows of many product and transportation designers as well as interior architects and architects we were able to talk to.
We want to use Early Access specifically to learn about the many use cases that we do not know yet. We encourage all users to give us feedback on the community site, via our support system and via social media.

We have also set up a feature voting mechanism, check out https://www.flyingshapes.com/upcoming-features/ to vote up your favourite ideas or add new suggestions.”

Update beta-3.16 released!

Our developers struck again. This patch introduces a lot of subtle changes enhancing the usability. Some of these are:
  • A loading animation in case you're importing some of these huge CAD-Models
  • A line showing you where to find imported objects
  • Enhanced usability of the two-hand extrusion mode (surface tool)
  • More natural hovering behavior

Update beta-3.15 released!

We have released version beta-3.15 of flyingshapes which comes with a bunch of new cool features:
  • Added box selection tool
  • Added IGES import and export
  • Improved STEP import/export scaling
  • Bugfixes and Usability Improvements
To try our new box selection, simply click the selection button part on the touchpad (or the selection button on the Oculus Rift controller) while you do not hover anything. Now move the controller and you will create a 3D selection box that selects everything inside. This tool is extremely useful, give it a try!

About This Software

The Virtual Reality CAD

Create and shape industry-grade 3D models as if they were real objects right in front of you. Manipulate your design intuitively by moving the controllers in your hands. Don't waste any more time trying to find the perfect form of 3D objects on a 2D screen. You are now entering the world of flyingshapes VR CAD.

Perfect for designing products and vehicles

The creative workflow of flyingshapes has been engineered specifically for designers of industrial objects, products and vehicles. Concept modeling and form finding have never been that intuitive.

Start with a rough sketch in the virtual space around you. Thanks to VR even your very first drawing is already three-dimensional. From the very beginning onwards you experience all the dimensions of your object as if you were looking at a built prototype. Refine your design by adding lines, curves and surfaces. Shape your design with your hands by pushing here and pulling there using the controllers. Turn your object, move it around or lean over it to see it from your preferred angle.

Whether you are designing an espresso machine or a skyscraper, you will love drawing in VR space. Invite other team-members, work with them via cloud and share your designs with people from all over the world. Export your 3D-models to industry-grade formats such as STEP, STL and others for convenient transfer to your 3D printer.

Revolutionize your design-workflow with flyingshapes, the CAD entirely reimagined for virtual reality.
