Here in the deepest depths of clockworks, lies a foe far more dangerous than all the monsters of Cradle.

Early game is pretty fun and fairly easy to advance through. However, once you hit mid game (missions 5-1 and on), it starts to get increasingly grindy... or you can pay real money to expedite your advance.

That said, I was going to go through just to finish the game and get all achievements. But I found out one achievement requires buying 2 trinket slot upgrades and 2 weapon slot upgrades - things you can only buy with energy (combined cost of 800 energy). To get energy you have to pay cash (750 energy for $2.5) or you can exchange your crowns (game currency) for energy (~10,000 crowns for 100 energy). You can probably raise about 10,000 crowns every 1-2 hours. Additionally, the trinket and weapon upgrade slots only last 30 days - if you want them after that time, you'd have to get them again...

Another issue is you get to pick one of three pets as part of the 'story' progression. Once you pick, you cannot change your mind - you are stuck with it. However, it is possible to get other pets... at a cost of 2100 energy each.

The third issue is upgrading gear - a requirement for 'story' progression. To upgrade one piece, you need three orbs of the correct level, but all orbs are very rare drops. Mission 4-1 requires a set of 2 star gear (gear set = helmet, armor, shield, weapon - 2 star, easy enough). 5-2 requires 3 star gear (I saved time grinding by using 20K crowns to trade for 200 energy to buy a pack of three advanced orbs to complete my set). Mission 6-2 requires 4 star gear... I only have one elite orb right now and need at least 16. I can get packs of 3 for 400 energy each (total of 1600 = 160,000 crowns) or spend a few hours at a time to get a chance for one orb to drop. Not sure which mission requires lv 5 gear, but those orbs cost 800 energy for a pack of three... Leveling gear is similarily frustrating for level 3 gear and up - fire crystals drop more frequently than orbs, but you need a lot more to level up 5 pieces of equipment to level 10.

A few final notes: At times the game can lag a little - but if you are in a pack of baddies, you could find yourself dead without seeing yourself get hit (I died with full health due to internet connection lag four times in 50 hrs of gameplay. Lastly, as you reach mid game the levels and baddies become a little redundant (especially with all the required grinding).

Also note that my perspective is primarily from a solo vantage - played a little co-op with a friend. So I cannot comment on PvP or guild play or the like.

All considered, I cannot recommend this game as it gives you two options to progress once you reach mid game - grind tons of hours for little gain or pay chunks of cash.

“The Skylark has been hit, sir!” one of the Knights cried out.

“Evacuate immediately! Nobody should be left on board!” came the orders of Captain Ozlo.

...And so the story begins.

Spiral Knights is an MMORPG with roguelike elements and a scientific fantasy theme. You play as one of the Knights of the Spiral Order. Your primary function, before the crash of the Skylark, which was a massive spaceship, was to discover power strong enough to defeat your enemies in the Morai Wars on Isora, your homeworld. The Skylark picked up a major energy reading on a planet called Cradle. However, when the Skylark ventured to the planet, someone or something fired some sort of weapon at the ship, thus causing it to crash into the planet and partially explode.

Now, instead of finding a power source to save Isora, you are now looking for a way to fix the Skylark and return home. You aren't alone in this endeavor. Other crash survivors are also working towards the same goal.

Despite its welcoming name, Cradle holds many secrets. One secret is that of the alien species on the surface of the planet. Known only as Strangers, they have agreed to help the Knights by selling them equipment and materials. Other, darker secret hide below Cradle's surface though. Deep within the depths of the planet is a complex dungeon system known as the Clockworks.

Not much is known about the Clockworks. The Knights know it is constantly changing and that a race of aliens known as Gremlins live within the confines of the Clockworks. They are also are aware of the Core, which is in the center of the planet and was the thing giving off the energy source detected by the Skylark. Theories of the nature of the Clockworks vary from an experiment by the Gremlins to a museum of alien worlds absorbed by Cradle. Apart from the theories and facts, it is up to the player to explore the dungeons of the Clockworks and find a way off the planet.

The game itself is really straightforward. Spiral HQ will give you missions that will teach you everything you need to know as well as give you ways to explore the Clockworks. These missions are divided up into different sections that will serve as tutorials and advance the story. There are also daily missions that will eventually get your prestige up (which basically gives you a spiffy symbol next to your name).

Another major part of the game is alchemy. Using materials you find in the dungeons, Bazaar, or Market, you can create weapons and armor that will assist you in exploration. There are currently five levels of equipment with one being the worst and five being the best. These levels, known as stars, allow you to gauge how well-suited (no pun intended) you are for a mission.

This equipment can be “forged” by collecting heat spheres in the Clockworks. One an item is fully heated after completing a level, you may use a Fire Crystal to level up your equipment. This is not the same leveling up that goes along with alchemy however. The equipment you use must be leveled up so many times using forging before it can be turned into a higher star using alchemy. Long story short, forging is a stepping stone used to better equipment in the alchemy stations.

Pets are another part of Spiral Knights. There are three types of pets that are conducive to certain playing styles. The first pet is a dragon that is predominantly used for offense. The second pet, being a cat, is mainly a support pet. The third, which is a phantom, is a combination of offense and defense.

Fear not! You don't have to brave the Clockworks alone! Guilds and exploration parties are both commonplace in Spiral Knights. Banding together to explore the dungeons below is an excellent way to level up and have fun.

Guilds tend to be more formal than exploration parties. Depending on the size and seriousness of the guild, the guild may demand a few things from you. The guild has an “upkeep” cost that must be met weekly to keep the guild running properly. A guild also has the chance to purchase upgrades and decorations for their guild hall. That all comes with a higher upkeep cost though! A stricter guild will demand a certain amount of crowns, the in-game currency, per week from you whereas a lax guild could care less about how much you donate.

All of this is wrapped up nicely with a beautiful soundtrack, cute graphics, player trading, a “stock market,” and frequent events.

This game is amazingly good. It could do with some more updates and a bit more content, but overall is finely tuned game. I would recommend checking it out, especially with a few friends so you can all learn and explore together.

A game that has an exclusive TF2 hat, but has more reviews about how good the game is rather than reviews saying "install-get TF2 hat-uninstall".

Genuinly fun game, not Pay-to-win in the slightest. Fun combat system, trading with players, hours of enjoyable gameplay and adventure.

Not a graphics-intensive game (you could run this fine on a low-end laptop), but still looks really good! Art style is very charming.

Definetily reccomend!

This is a great little co-op with interesting and creative levels and enemies. I would recommend this game, but only if you had other people to play along with you.

At first I loved the game and would play for hours and hours on end.
However, once you get to around rank 5-1 the game gets SUPER grindy and the only way is to, well grind, or pay real money.
In the end it just takes ages and its not fun anymore, the enemies HP are just too high and they do too much damage.
I guess its still fun for the first 100 hours, but since u can only really play half the game before you lose your pants, I'm gonna give it a thumbs down, sorry guys.
