Really good mix of tower defense, rts, and third person gameplay. Also an actual game that involves a semblance of WW1, so that is a plus.

Product: Toy Soldiers

Rating: 9.5/10

Recommended amount to pay: I would say this game is worth about $9.99 to $14.99

Personal thoughts of game:
Pro-Commanding individual Turrents that you place adds a whole new level of fun to the Tower Defence Genre
Con-Does not come with a online multiplayer feature like the xbox live version does

Why I recommend this: For fans of Tower Defence games, this is a must. The style of taking command over turrents is just such a fun and also stragetic way to battle through the levels of Toy Soldiers. Cutting through the little walking toy men with your machine gun and battling the boss Toys that trample through the map by firing your loud artillery is very entertaining. Also using the vehicles that are stationed on alot of maps such as the tank or biplane adds a whole new level of strategy. This game and its sequal are very enjoyable and I recommend checking them both out.

The first couple levels in this game was bloody brilliant! Spectacular! Fun! Exciting!

... but everything changed when you started taking control of your units... The tower defense game quickly turned into... something else. You start as a normal tower defense game, placing artillery and machine guns. Then later you are forced to pilot planes, and take hold of a sniper rifle to get the job done yourself. All of which defeats the purpose of a tower defense. You're basically playing call of duty at that point.

The worst part about this game is the absolutely intrusive "Windows Live" enforced login, which sometimes makes the game impossible to play. What's the point of piracy protection when you prohibit even your own players from playing correctly?

It's a nice game to waste a half hour or so. It's pretty much an arcade game and most gamers will easily pick this one up. There's no learning curve and even the flying and steering as well as aiming is quite casual. I bought if for a few bucks and it's fun enough.

The A.I. is very accurate with the turrets and it's often more efficient to just let the computer do the defending while the player jumps into the vehicles to mop up or to take over some of the turret platforms. The A.I. however has a specific range for each turret and will only fire when enemies enter that range. If done in manual control, most of your turrets can fire across the map and mow down the enemy before they can even gather up for a proper assault.

There's not too many variation with the turrets though. I found the flame/gas/spray turrets too short range and inefficient compared to the machine gun. I mostly wind up with howitzers, machine guns and the occasional anti air gun depending on the level.

Like I said the game doesn't really require you to put too much thought into it. Enemies are quite fragile and even vehicles can die to machine gun fire after some effort. The only difficulty comes from the bosses/mini bosses being bullet sponges.

A cheap game for some casual fun.

If you expect a run of the mill tower defense game your expectations are a bit low. In Toy Soldiers there is a tower defense element, but you get to control your "Towers", gun emplacements, and you can drive tanks/fly planes when the resources are there for you. To put you in perspective: "You are the only machine gun on the British line as groups of German soldiers charge towards you. You must hold the line for King and Country at all costs." The only problem I ran into with this game is that you cannot play it with out internet connection even though it is a single player game. But all in all a great game. 9/10

A charming tower defence strategy game, without any blood or gore.

Brings you back to a child playing with toy soldiers.

The downside is that to enjoy this games good graphics, you need a good graphics card. My current rig is a dual core intel E8400 with a Geforce GTS450 GDDR5 version. Runs smooth at 2560*1080 with full options.

Don't buy, has many missing features from the original XBLA game (no DLC or multiplayer).
Until the stuff that was in the XBLA version is added I would not recomend buying.
The actual game itself on the other hand is great fun.

I love tower defense games and this one is really unique! It definitely gets you right into the heart of the action by letting you get in the towers and shoot the enemies or even getting in an airplane and taking the enemy on from the sky! Great game!

This game is awesome!!! I bought it on sale for the heck of it and I have to say I am thoroughly impressed. There is a lot of variety. You can control your turrets to mow down advancing enemies, fly plains, drive tanks, and snipe from watch towers. The game has a lot to offer if you have 6 bucks to spare buy it now. You won't regret it.
