This is the game that got me into Bioware games. I have very fond memories playing this countless times on my original Xbox. The main story is well writen and the world beautiful. The characters and the majority of the side quests are interesting. If you are a John Cleese fan, he does have a cameo in the game in one of the side quests. It still looks great on my computer as it did when I first played it on my original Xbox.

I personaly feel, combat itself is what hurts it however. Each of the fighting styles has one heavy attack and one light attack with the same blocking animation, with no real combos. This can make the combat feel boring at times if you are only using one or two fighting styles. You will be wanting to increase the number of fighting styles and hotkeying them so it does not feel as repetitive.

I do prefer this version on my PC since the load times are not as bad as the version on my Xbox. However this copy took me a while to get it to work on my computer. I had to go threw countless troubleshooting and work arounds but eventualy I did get it to work.

If you are a Bioware fan and enjoy RPG's I can easily recommend this game even though I went threw hell trying to get it to work. It is a shame that this game is considered to be a commercial flop since I feel that it should have done better when it first came out.

Great game! I never heard of this Bioware game until recently. Despite it was released a decade ago it is definitely one of my favorite RPGs to date! If you're looking for a short RPG (15 hours) with a great plot and some good hand-hand combat, this is the game for you.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.....Jade Empire will stand the test of time.

That being said, Jade Empire was a thing of beauty during its time for fans of the genre. Graphically amazing, story telling amazing, combat system very fun, customization eh... but still sufficient. I played a lot of xbox games when this came out and this was one of the only games besides Halo 2 that had me hooked and I might have needed rehab at the time only to have relapsed with the release of Mass Effect soon after ;P. The main hook for me was and still is the story (and my love for martial arts). Not that the story was over-the-top incredible or bursting with shock and awe but it was truly captivating and realistic because of the connection you develop with the characters like any meaningful story will allow you to do, and so easily. I would recommend this story for anyone who hasn't experienced it yet.

OK so like I said for its time the graphics were amazing. but nowadays if your not a fan and your the new guy or gal picking this up you might be uncomfortable with its lack of visual stimulation. Well I might have painted a rough picture of Jade Empires graphics, The game still has 1st gen xbox graphics but there are still many mods out there to enhance this game graphically. What you want to look for in this games beauty are the landscapes and the vibrant far east colors.

Combat is fun but a bit rough starting off as per usual. You choose two combat styles to start with and to complement those you get to choose one of two weapons and you can switch between these 3 arts very quickly during battle. There is a tab target to switch through enemies and it is very accessible. The only problem I had was attack speed and positioning, you'll find yourself charging up an attack that takes way too long and doesnt land its target because they had an hour to move >.>. The great thing about this little problem is that you can actually put points into attack speed wooooo! problem fixed you just gotta get good :D

Well that concludes my review.

You don't find too many games in the genre like this especially not one with an Oriental storyline by Bioware, They did an outstanding job with this title and I hope one day an updated re-release until then ill enjoy this version!

Terrific game with a strong story, as one would expect from BioWare. The RPG elements are very, very weak as there is precious little customization. I prefer to think of this as a story-driven beat-em-up, not an RPG, and adjust my expectations accordingly. However, it is a fantastic story-driven beat-em-up.

Fun and great game, but the steam version sucks..... too many bugs, alotta time to fix, and the game menue& HUD shift down the screen an inch whenever the game saves, makeing me restart to fix the problem. I'd recommend this game, but not on steam without some patches or time taken to fix bugs. Sucks because its a great game, but i should have just gotten it on xbox backwards copmatability. I wanna play the game, not do repair work.

I'm enjoying this a lot
absolutely no filler, no running around just to complete trivial filler quests
nice challenging gameplay without vast quantities of junk to collect
abilities and power ups make a difference rather than just filling the game with operational junk

graphics are lovely, really nice color harmony, good light dark contrasting

full 360 controller compatability but i did need to go here
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-965422.html
to configure the gamepad properly
i moved pause from the left thumbstick to another button
because it easily interferes with combat moves

camera can be fierce when turning, needs abit of tuning

the dialogue between characters isnt full of filler either, it's game useful instead of just enlarging the game

i'm glad i got this
i was pleasantly surprised considering its age
an old gem i missed

The game itself is truly fantastic with a few minor bugs here and there. Starting up the game is a bit frustrating mostly because there is an error where it doesn't recognize Steam. I found a fix for it in the Steam community so it was an easy bypass once I finally found it. I was finally able to finish the game today after being in my Steam library for about 2 years.
Would recommend for people who want a good story and if you are patient with the combat.

I had to mod the game files just to get it to launch. After that pain the framerate was so poor combat was almost imposible. Not to metion it crashed a few times before Icould getout of the tutorial. Unless you are really deicated to playing jade impire, ( its a great game if you can astualy play it) I would give this a pass. Its not worth $15, unless its ever on sale for less then $10 avoid this game, there are far beter indi games for $15.

Consigliatissimo!

Pretty fun game, can't say I relate to the people here having problems launching the game because I went from start to end without hitting a bug or any kind of issue. Take it at face value though, just because I had a good experience it doesn't mean that yours will be too.

Won't say it's worth 15€ (even though it's so good, it's an old game, at most it'd be worth 10€), so get it on sale if you can. Otherwise, ask someone to family share with you so you can try the game and see if it runs well!

Jade Empire reminds me a lot of the kotor games. It seems to have a very similar overall plot and pacing. It even has the "dark side" and "light side" choices. The setting of course is way different. It's an oriental martial arts setting. The plot is interesting and the writing is up there with the other Bioware games. It's probably one of the least known Bioware games, but it's definitely worth playing. Even though the plot seems to follow the same formula as kotor's, the combat isn't the same, at all. It's a real time combat system with resource bars for your abilities. You must dodge enemy attacks in real time and know when to attack.

It's a solid Bioware experience. If you're a fan of the other Bioware games, I'd say definitely play this one as well.

Pretty bad. Dialogue is boring. Story is boring. Combat is boring. Most combat styles are useless. I like the gem system.

2/5. Game had a lot of potential, it just feels like they rushed it or they didn't spend much effort making any of the pieces stand out.

#Note: Will require some change of settings to get it to work on Win8/Win10; I got mine to work by doing the below things:
-Set all .exe files (JadeEmpire.exe, JadeEmpireLauncher.exe, JadeEmpireConfig.exe, TestApp.exe) to run by Administrator with compatability mode for Windows XP (SP3).
-Copy Steam.dll from %\Steam\ to %\Steam\steamapps\common\Jade Empire
-Create a blank file named SystemInformation.xml in %\Steam\steamapps\common\Jade Empire\data

I originally played this game on XBOX back when it was first released and have decided to give it another go. Game is just as fun as it was when I played it 10 years ago and doesn't appear to have aged too badly. Recommend if you enjoyed the mass effect series as the game runs a similar story engine. I played using a third party controller and x360ce and it has worked fine throughout.

Brief Overview:
Jade Empire is set in a feudal China like setting named Jade Empire, a large empire ruled and controlled by the Emporer Sun Hai. Your character is an orphan, orphaned by the expansion of the Jade Empire and has been adopted and trained by Master Li in the remote town of Two Rivers. The last of a line of now extinct monks, your character has a large part to play in the destiny of the world.

The game features live-action fighting combat utilizing a variety of fighting, weapon and magical styles, and a chat system featuring an allignment gain similar to that of the Mass Effect series.

Play through should last approximately 20-30 hours. Definitely a game worth a look at if it comes up on steam sale!

This last game from Bioware before they were under EA is set in a uniquely Asian wuxia martial arts inspired setting.

One of the great Bioware RPGs up there with KOTOR and Dragon Age. The biggest difference from their other games is that it takes place in the Eastern fantasy world of Jade Empire and character's fighting styles are inspired by martial arts practices and techniques. If you like Bioware RPGs and, or fantasy martial arts movies play this game.

To expand upon my previous review the game isn't as deep as Kotor may be, though simplified Jade Empire is still a great experience. The gameplay is more action based than other Bioware games, no strategic pause option, D&D rules, and such. You can use focus points to slow down time for an advantage or for certain styles. Each fighting style you gain can be leveled up and is like it's own weapon or feat. You'll most likely find yourself switching between two or three that work the best. The diologue and choices are as great as you'd expect from a Bioware game. The story is basic but leads up to a pretty good twist and the quests are great, hardly any felt like pointless fetch quests. Very enjoyable game that would make a great intro into RPGs or fans wanting more.

TLDR: Jade Empire's Steam edition has horrible frame rate issuses that wont be fixed. The edition on Origin runs amazingly well and is FREE.

The only reason I'm putting this as a postivie review, is because more people will see it. I bought this game because I enjoyed it on my XBox, however the graphics are horrible and the frame rate is so slow that fighting is almost impossible at points in time. Moving is also horrible out of combat is worse, making the game stutter, and honestly giving me motion sickness.

The reason I'm bringing this up is because, recently I bought the Sims4 on Origin. Once I downloaded Origin itself, a notification popped up and Origin litterally gave me this edition of Jade Empire FOR FREE. It runs smooth, in and out of combat.

Jade Empire is one of the greatest RPGs ever made, and I still cannot understand why it remains one of the most underrated ones.

It's easily Bioware's best work, which is an impressive accomplishment considering the excellence of Knights Of The Old Republic. I have very fond memories of playing this on my XBOX when it was first released, and then sadly giving the game away. Regardless of this version's totally unnecessary, asinine technical issues (which are fortunately easily resolved), this game is absolutely a must play.

It's somehow gotten even better over the years. What stood out to me when I was a kid was the mythological, epic story and the combat, and it remains nothing short of awesome. The engaging, intriguing characters bring the interesting plot to life, as well as grounding the more fantastical elements and making it personal. You cannot help but become emotionally invested in the world. Rich lore, side quests, and their corresponding items make it highly addicting. At first glance, the combat may appear simplistic, but it controls smoothly and takes a while to truly master. The ability to use weapons and transform into intimidating demons is so great and never gets old. Once you become adept at switching between distinctive combat and support styles, fighting becomes an intricate and brutal dance. Multiple play throughs are a given, especially with the compelling morality system. The pretty graphics hold up surprisingly well, the soundtrack is breathtakingly beautiful, and Jade Empire will leave an impact on you that is sure to stay.

This is a game you should savour every moment of!

Love the game. Yes, it's broken. Doubt they will ever fix it.

But, I am able to play by clicking the icon on my desktop. Steam doesn't recognize me playing, but I'm able to play the game, and that's what's most important to me.

Obviously it would be ideal that they just fix the damn thing, but in the meantime I can just leave the launcher open so that steam thinks I'm playing while I play outside of steam. And I only bother because I kind of like to know the amount of hours I play.

Bottom line, get this game somewhere else, cause it's amazing, but can be a hassle through steam. I'm going to say I recommend it, but for the game's sake. My sister told me Origin is offering it for free. X

This is a borderline positive recommendation, for a number of reasons.

The story as a whole is good, but dissapointing. It is a very predictable story. You are a student to a great, but unknown master with a dark past that wants to keep you safe until the hand of destiny itself sets you on a path to restore balance in the empire. There is a twist that feels telegraphed and a bit of mystery surrounding one of the characters that gives itself away before you're even two hourse in, if you're paying attention. It is short, but in this case it's a good thing, as the story is so generic it would feel like wading through a pool of undried cement. At just about 25 hours, give or take, it paces itself rather well and is coherent, but for a game with conversation options, it's extremely linear, especially once you enter the fortress. The biggest let down is the conversations. Each conversation you are given a number of lines you can choose which amount to nothing unless it's an obvious good vs. evil type of choice. Each character you speak to reacts almost the same way and says the same things regardless of your answer, with some exceptions with the three romance options (two per gender). Also, every important character that you encounter more often than once will repeat themselves almost endlessly. In one conversation I had with the Water Dragon, she told me the same thing no less than seven times, to the detriment of my already dying brain.
The combat is, well, annoying. On one hand it's dynamic, keeping you involved in every fight, which is a good thing. On the other hand it's repetitive and even outright annoying. Your attacks have this bothersome ability of knocking back the enemy you are attacking just out of reach of your next attack, unless you pin them to the edge of the fight zone. Fast styles are almost hands down superior to any slower style because each attack interrupts your enemy (unless they are a massive enemy like the toad or elephant demons or the jade golems). The mechanics of each enemy, while interesting at first become a nuisance the further you go into the story, especially ghosts.
There is one mini game (thankfully) in the game, but I won't go into it as you can effectively skip all of it unless you want to finish a character's quest line. The other ones are useless, or next to.
The redeeming quality is the game's companion characters. For a short game they are rather one dimensional but interesting enough to last you the first half of the game after which you won't get anything more than remarks out of them, with the exception of your romance option. They will comment as you adventure and then when you all group up again will act like they were just then hearing about what was happening for the first time. However, they are colorful and fit very well within their one dimension, fleshing it out very well.

I understand that the review seems rather negative, but I rather enjoyed the game, with some glaring exceptions. Jade Empire is akin to that somewhat annoying dinner guest, who is pleasant enough company but you can't quite wait for them to leave, as much as you might wish to feel otherwise.

Overall this is a game that, in my opinion, desperately needs a sequel to redeem itself. I recommend it, but only barely. If you are looking to play an action game with a modicum of morality and interaction, this would fit quite well, but if you are looking for an actual rpg, this would not fit that bill

I purchased this game awhile back. Played through it and beat it. Came back and wanted to play it again because as an RPG game it offers a lot of diversity and ways of playing through the story with much dialog and quests.
However, the game 'failed to find steam' and will no longer run on my system. I spent hours upon hours trying to find an answer to this and eventually found a 'hot fix' in which I have to modify some of the game's files.

I should not have to do that though.
This game is 'broken' and until it gets an official patch I would recommend staying far far away from this title and possibly all Bioware titles.

The game is worth $0.00 in its current state.
