About This Game

Recettear is the story of an item shop, the girl who lives in it, and the fairy who turned her life upside down. Recette Lemongrass finds herself in charge of an item shop built into her house, in order to pay back a loan her father took and then skipped out on - and Tear, her newfound fairy "companion", won't take no for an answer! As Recette, you have to decide how you'll get your stock - either through playing the markets in town or going out into the wild with an adventuring friend and thrashing beasts until they give up the goodies - how much to sell things for, what the shop should look like, and how to best go about getting the money Tear needs to pay off the loan. If you can't come up with the money... well, hope you like living in a cardboard box.

Key features:

  • Manage all aspects of an item shop – from stock to interior design!
  • Explore randomized dungeons – never quite the same twice!
  • Multiple adventurers to choose from when dungeon-diving – no two play the same!
  • Plenty to do after beating the game – challenge yourself with Survival Mode or play to your heart's delight in Endless Mode!
  • Engaging story, localized by Carpe Fulgur – get to know the people of Pensee!

This game made me realise how much of a monster I was.
I have scammed the poor and innocent little girl multiple times, possibly causing her to get scolded by her mother many many times.
I have refused to pay good prices for items from the old man, even though I know he had financial difficulties.
I have cheated poor Louie so many times, even when he told me that it has been a rough month for him.

I feel like such a horrible greedy monster. 10/10.

50 hours into it later, I still haven't met all possible playable characters, let alone unlocked them.

I love the difficulty, I love the dungeoneering, I love the shop management, I love the characters, I love the script. I love this game harder than many, many, MANY other games. 9/10.

Forget the shiny veneer of anime girls. What you have here is a solid, simple item-shop simulation with a dungeon crawler attached.

You can haggle with customers over prices on specific items, buy items wholesale to sell, take advantage of market fluctuations to maximize profit margins on sold items, and explore dungeons with heroes you train up yourself in order to gather valuable items and crafting reagents with very little overhead.

There is a fair variety of enemies to slaughter, a system for taking advanced orders on bulk goods and an item crafting system that takes advantage of monster loot.

It is a lighthearted and fun economic game to enjoy for a few evenings. If you like ditzy anime girls getting into trouble, then it's all the better.

Give this one a try. It's worth even the full price of $20.

"Capitalism, ho!" basically sums up most of this game.
That, and dungeon crawling.
11/10 will keep playing.
