I loved the game. I got the game because you can get a free hat in TF2. But a kept the game because it was that good.

You make a few aquaintances at work/school/etc :D:
After talking to them for a week, you find out that they have a steam accounts too!
Pretty great, right? Except that... you don't play the same games. :(
Quite sad... but don't worry, this free game will save your butt.

Alien swarm is the perfect litmus test for your co-op partners' gaming skill, computer hardware, communication aptness, and so much more. Basically, if these aquaintances are worth befriending, you should make it through the 5th mission at the very least. In that time you will find out many things about them, some good, some bad, some weird. In the end, you will have passed through alien hell together. And from the splattered alien goop a beautiful (b)romance shall arise.

Alien Swarm, A free to play game with fun elements and immersive co-op gameplay. Alien Swarm is a top down, co-op shooter than involves excessive teamork, communication and strategy. Play as a space marine with you and 3 other players and inflaltrate areas infested with an alien colony. For me, I found the game fun. The game is special in its own way and provides certain points that can be really fun. I never really knew anyrhing about this game in the beggining as it is one of the more "forgotten" titles by valve. The game porvides some customizaton that fits your style of play, but some weapons are only useable with certain clases.

When you get into the game, you are tasked with a certain mission that you have to complete to progress the story so there is no time for free play or exploration. And as you would expect the games difficulty increases and the enemys get stronger. The story is decent and the gameplay is fast-paced and action packed, with blodd, gore and glory! Overall, I found the game "ok" as it did not really bring in anything new and the missions were quite repetitive and boring. That said, I am reviewing a game from 2010 so you cant really blame it. I have not completed the game but this is what I have to say so far.

But hey that just my opinion!

Absolutely love the individual roles and the feeling of the struggle to survive as you discover what happened by reading the data pads lying around each level. And without the option to turn off friendly fire, it makes the game far more realistic and difficult. A very cool challenge!!

Two things about this game are mysteries to me.
1. Why the game so good is for free.
2. And why it's not as popular as it deserves to be.

It is fun and solid.

Plus, it is free.

What´s not to love?

Addendum:
It does not have controller support, unfortunately.

I feel bad that people don't play this game anymore,if Valve made it a first person shooter it would probably be a lot more popular. But atleast you can make it first person with some console commands.Good game! ;)

If you have a few friends, and a couple of hours, you can easily blow through this little game. You won't regret any of it either.

Me: "ok what do we do now guys?"
Friend 1: "we put the bomb over there"
Friend 2: "ok then what"
Friend 1: "idk, something"
Me: "what is that timer?"
Friend 3: "RUN!"
other 3 of us: "what?"
we then proceeded to follow Friend 3 who led us in circles for some time before leading us into an ambush where we died before the bomb could get to us

9/10 If only it was longer

First game I ever played on Steam, years ago now. Helped me come to accept that Steam wasn't malware :P.

Some people say that the community is dead, or bad.

It's not, there's still a large number of pro players active. Many welcome new players. Some times when you try to find a game, at that moment, there may be none available. Still plenty of people playing; each lobby holds 4 players, each game takes a few minutes. Every full lobby is invisible. People come and go. Consider starting a lobby yourself if at that moment you cannot find any players, it's rare for more than a couple minutes to pass without someone joining. If nobody ever joins your hosting, check your ports, maybe you're not set to handle hosting - that would keep people out of your game for sure.

Or just check for open games in 30 seconds or so. There's often quite a flux of players going.

Years after I started to play this game, I keep coming back to it. I like how the teamwork works, I like how the game is complex enough at the higher levels that I'm still getting better at it, even after so many hours of play.

This is how i discovered this game
(me): wanted hats for tf2
(guide:) you need to complete 2 missions of alien swarm
(me:) "clicks download"
1 HOUR LATER
(me:) completes 2 missions
(me): finds hat on TF2
keeps playing dis game

SO i really loved this game but not many people play it and there should be more game modes
here are my suggestions:

survival: stand off the alien horde
escape: run from the aliens
plant the bomb: run into the horde while your freinds deafen i mean defend you
bughunt: hunt the boss aliens whilst tackling its freinds

I think Alien Swarm is a pretty cool guy, eh kills aleins and doesn't afraid of anything.

Actually though, this is a great game. Massacre aliens with up to three other people (and a lot more guns), weld doors shut to try and keep them out, cut doors open because oh-crap-you-have-to-go-back-through-there, and get butchered by the Swarm. You'll die. A lot. But it's super fun.

Alien Swarm is an amazing game you shouldn't play anymore.

This game was great, I played it constantly for a period. Gamplay was fun, fresh and rewarding, it was great either alone or in a squad, and it had a great asthetic. Murdering hoardes of aliens was so godamn fun, and the prestiege system was, while nothing new, a nice way of incentivizing.

However, I guess nobody gave the devs more money, or they simply misjudged the difficulty of content creation, or they just forgot the f2p elements, and this game slowly died. It had a great community, but you can only play one campaign so many times. People started leaving, and this game has kind of been lost to time.

Alien Swarm was a perfect example of a game, in many ways, done right. It's just sad to see it kind of fade like it did.
