What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Sunset Rangers will provide a good western experience, and since it's being developed by a very small indie team, the idea is to use the Early Access system to get feedback, suggestions and bug reports from you, the player. At the same time, we work hard to fix bugs and issues quickly and we try to keep a close relationship with the players, being always present in the discussions page.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“It'll be released as soon as it is polished enough to be deemed a finished product.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The plan is to improve and add questlines, improve NPCs AI and improve the overall experience.

The current build is deemed "Feature Complete", which means we won't add new major features.
From now on we will balance the game, add more questlines, fix bugs, improve the performance, add more content.

But you say you won't add features but will add content? Yes, we'll add items, objects to be build in your base, questlines, etc. But we won't add a whole new feature.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is already Feature Complete, though is still needs testing, balance, bugfixing and performance improvements.

The current features are:
- Random world building with different biomes (desert, dunes, canyons, grasslands), vegetation, cities, forts, abandoned buildings
- Base Building
- Factions, you can ally yourself with different factions
- Reputation, using a Karma system, you can become the Sheriff in the server or the Most Wanted
- Horses, buy a horse in your base and have a mount available anytime
- Questlines
- Random revolvers and rifles, each time you find a gun it's built from random different parts
- Unique (more powerful) guns
- Lots of different ammunition
- Events and PvE: Lots of loots scattered around the world and lots of enemies to kill.
- Survival: Keep everything in check: food satiety, hydration, temperature, while running around in the desert
- Permadeath (with a twist), each player have a stash that he can bury anywhere in the world, if you die, you lose everything, except what's in your stash, but choose carefully where to bury it, because other players can steal your items if they find your stash.
- Different classes giving a different set of starting equipments
- Lots of clothings and equipments
- Friendship mechanic, add your friends, track them in the world, unite and conquer the west!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We will increase the price as the game gets closer to a final version, eventually reaching the full price intented for the finished product.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will collect bug reports, crash reports, suggestions and opinions and use them to polish the game, decide what to add next and properly balance the game.”

Announcing first Sunset Rangers beta version

Announcing the first beta version

What does it mean to reach beta?
It means we've come a long way, and we're very happy that we could add all the major features the community requested, even the ones that weren't planned in the first versions (Base building, horses, etc).

It also means all the major features are now added to the game and we won't be adding more big features. Now the focus will shift to add content (more quests, events), balance the game, improve performance, and add minor features.

What are the major features that are now added?
In the current state the major features are:
  • Random western-inspired world with events and quests
  • Thousands of weapons to discover
  • Base Building
  • Horse mechanic
  • Karma mechanic (want to befriend the bandits by killing soldiers? Go ahead)
  • Faction mechanic (ally yourself to one of the factions)
  • Survival mechanic (keep track of hunger, thirst, temperature)
  • NPCs to interact, sell items, buy items, kill, loot
  • Character customization (class, skin, clothings, equipments)
  • Character development (scaling gear quality)
  • Challenging experience with a hint of humor.

What will be added?
Sheriff/Most Wanted mechanic will be more developed, NPC interactions, better AI, more questlines and anything the community suggest and that wouldn't be too big to represent a major feature.

What won't be added?
Anything that's too big of a change in the current build.

How about the next builds?
They'll have lots of important performance improvements, in both network consumption AND frames per second. They'll also have lots of re-balance of the game rules (damages, speeds, accuracy, etc). And also, of course, tons of bugfixing. The main focus now is to polish the experience.

Want to help us?
You can support the project by participating in the balance/game design discussions, suggesting changes and improvements, helping detect bugs and glitches and by spreading the word, let your friends know about Sunset Rangers.

In addition to quests laden with exciting new lore, the game features base building, crafting, and random events and loot. Play alone or co-op style with friends as you explore the precarious world of Sunset Rangers.

Sunset Rangers takes the excitement and perils of the Wild West and turns them into an open world sandbox game meant to be explored and conquered. Choose between multiple classes and build a custom character, which you can use to complete quests, collect and craft materials, and build bases.

The expansive game allows you to explore a vast open world full of arid deserts, elaborate canyons, and lawless towns. Sunset Rangers immerses you in the rugged Wild West as you’re forced to survive against the elements, arming yourself with a wide array of unique guns, each with special abilities.

You play solo or build a server and team up with friends as you brave this untamed world, but be careful, not everyone can be trusted, and actions such as killing come with consequences.

Key Features

  • Build your own character and choose from different classes such as blacksmith, civilian, or soldier
  • Randomly generated maps with unique biomes including deserts, canyons, and grasslands
  • Base building and crafting
