What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

**Sailaway is an online only game and is currently under continuous development so do expect bugs and server bumps along the way. Please only purchase the Early Access version of Sailaway if you want to be a part of making this the best sailing simulation around.**

Sailaway is a huge game in many different ways, from the immense scale of the world's oceans to the infrastructure needed to actually keep the game and features online. We are keen to ensure the game is as complete and stable as possible before we class it as ready for general sale.

Early Access is ideal for a game of Sailaway’s scale when the development team is small, this means the community will play a large role in helping to shape what the game ultimately becomes and ensures it gets the features that matter the most.

There will be bugs (which we will fix) and there will be server issues (which we will resolve) but by the end of early access period we hope to have created the ultimate sailing simulation that all can enjoy!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“This all depends on the features and changes suggested by our players but we are currently looking at around 6 months or so.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Content will be the main improvement between now and the full version of Sailaway, we will be looking to expand the game in the following ways:

  • More boats
  • More tutorials
  • More challenges
  • More Events
  • Improved ingame community features
  • Improved world detail
  • Improved heightmap data for oceans

Community feedback will also help shape the final games features.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The heart of Sailaway is complete and ready to play, players can sail almost anywhere in the world on a selection of different boats either alone or with friends. We fully expect there to be bumps along the way as this is still a game in development but we will be working as hard as we can to get any issues resolved as fast as reasonably possible.

Here is what you can currently expect to find in Sailaway Early Access:

  • 5 Boats – 38′ Cruiser, Mini-Transat, 52′ Classic Yacht, 52′ Cruising Catamaran, 50′ Performance Cruiser
  • Accurately modelled sails and controls
  • All the oceans of the world to sail on in real time
  • Sail online with friends - on the same boat or alongside each other
  • Real-time local, group and global chat
  • Global sailing invites - easy to find new friends to sail with!
  • Real Weather - accurately modelled weather from real world data
  • Real Waves - accurately modelled waves based on location
  • Real Water - accurately modelled water color based on location
  • Real Sky - accurately modelled day & night sky
  • Interactive world map - to plot and manage your voyages
  • A small selection of tutorials
  • A small selection of challenges

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We currently have no plans on raising the price after we exit early access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“With a small team working on the game community involvement is going to be important to ensure we can get make Sailaway the best sailing simulation available.
We know Sailing is enjoyed by many different types of people in many different ways and we understand that our players will be the same. We will be keeping a close eye on your feedback so we can adjust development plans accordingly.

We will be actively involved in speaking to the community via the Steam forums and the forums available on our own website and will be making sure we do regular game updates to show development is ongoing.

Sailaway Update V.0.9.017 - New music, audio and gennaker customisation plus some bug fixes!

Hello Pioneers,

Today we are adding more music to the game along with some new audio and customisation options plussome bug fixes.

Gameplay Music!
Created by Francisco Perez (who also created the main menu music) we now have music for when you are sailing. There are currently six tracks that play depending on the type of weather you are sailing in, from calm sunny days to exciting high winds!
We would love to hear your feedback on having music in the game, would you like more?
If music isn’t your thing or you prefer to listen to your own then you can turn this off by reducing the music volume to 0 in the audio settings menu.

New Audio
We have recorded some new audio for a few effects, there is new audio for the water, sails flapping and ropes being eased and pulled.

Dual Gennaker Colours
There are 4 new customisation packs that allow you to use 2 different colours on the gennaker like so:

Bug Fixes
  • Adjusted navigation lights to increase their visibility at longer ranges.
  • Other boats in your fleet should now travel again while you are online.
  • Adjusted the way map images are loaded to hopefully reduce the chance of them turning white.
  • The missing horn sound when completing a race is restored!
  • The large trench of water behind the boat has been smoothed out.
  • Dolphins no longer appear when anchored.
  • Boat speeds in massive storms were too high so have been reduced.
  • Foam near the boat was affected by boat shadow too much.
  • The Main traveler was operated from the wrong side of the 50' cruiser.

If you have a bug you'd like to report, please follow the guide for 'how to report a bug' and post a new thread in the Bug Reporting Forum.

Happy Sailing,
The Sailaway Team

About This Game

Have you ever dreamt of sailing along your favourite coastline or amongst the tropical islands of the South Pacific?

Maybe you prefer the challenge of sailing across the Southern Oceans enduring the fiercest storms they have to offer?

Or you just wish to learn to sail but have no access to a boat to do so?

With Sailaway you can do all of these things. Sailaway lets you explore the world's oceans in the comfort of your own home, on PC or Mac, in the most accurate simulation of sailing you can find anywhere!

In Sailaway, the oceans of the planet have been recreated with unparalleled accuracy; making a trip across the Pacific take months, just as it would on a real boat. With a persistent online world, adjust your settings and your boat will continue to sail even if you aren’t online. Receive updates via email as your boat continues its progress, but don't forget to check in often – with real-time weather data pulled from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) conditions can change in just a few hours.

Sailaway gives players the most realistic digital sailing experience to date with in-depth simulations of weather, wind and currents while your boat and it’s sail are modelled to give even the most experienced sailor a work-out. The early difficulty modes will let you sail away while you learn the game and then it truly comes alive when the virtual help is removed and it’s you against the forces of nature. If you’re going to beat your friends then you’ll need to plot your course and constantly monitor your sail’s shape, use any slight advantage to help you arrive first!

The ocean can sometimes feel like a lonely place which is why Sailaway includes plenty of ways to enjoy activities with friends and strangers alike. Real-time global, local and group chat will allow you to communicate freely with other sailors to organise your own voyages or even to just pass on sailing tips!

Invite others to your boat to help tackle the voyage ahead or if you fancy some friendly competition you can invite them along with their boat to sail alongside each other, we make it easy to share the sailing experience with others.

If competitive racing is more your thing then we also have you covered, Sailaway lets you take part in races across the globe! Record your finish times in our online leaderboards and challenge one another for the top spot.

Sailaway has been designed to accurately simulate the wonders of sailing as realistically as possible, which means all the little details count!

Real Sail Trim

Every control you would expect to find on a real sailboat is here to use in Sailaway, you will be using sheets and trim lines to optimize the shape of your sails and gain every second you can on your journey or race.

Real Weather

The clouds, wind, fog, rain and snow are all simulated according to the real weather as provided by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This means you can use actual weather predictions from your favorite weather service to plan your journey.

Real Waves

Sailaway simulates the waves accurately, taking the history of wind direction and wind speed into account, as well as current, water depth and nearby islands or shallow areas. The North Sea has different waves than the Atlantic Ocean or South Pacific and each present their own set of challenges.

Real Water

The colour of the water you sail upon is effected by a great many things, from the blue of pure water to the brownish colour of muddy rivers. Sailaway adjusts water colour by depth and other influences before it renders a single drop of water to make it as realistic as possible.

Real Sky

Our ancestors navigated by the stars which is why we made sure the positions of the sun, moon, planets and stars are all correct. There is even a handy feature that highlights the constellations but just like in the real world if the sky happens to be cloudy there will be nothing to see but darkness.

Real Maps

To aid navigation there is an interactive map that can zoom from world scale to small coves, displaying deep and shallow areas, rocks, buoys, lights and everything you need for a safe journey.
