Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The first full version release is planned for Q1 2018. However, this won't stop the further development.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have seven playable characters, 40 different enemies with various fighting mechanics, 20+ bosses and 120+ items and weapons with different abilities including magic and status effects. You will be able to pick one of 30 pet animals to aid you on your journey. There will be different game modes (Challenges, Hard mode, etc.) The full version will have more Steam Achievements as well.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game currently offers 6 playable characters:
  • Knight (melee combat and defensive armor)
  • Archer (archery, increased inventory)
  • Druid (speciality: poison)
  • Sorceress (speciality: healing)
  • Pyromancer (speciality: fire)
  • Undead Ranger (collects bones from fallen enemies to power up)

All the chapters of the story are complete, you can play the base game from start to finish. This includes item shops with the shopkeeper's bodyguard, 9 NPC quests and 21 bosses.

Random potions and scrolls with about 30 different effects are already in the game and about 80 weapons and items you can find. Status effects like Poison, Frozen, Burning, Petrified, etc. are already implemented as well as magic spells like teleport, turning enemies into harmless objects or creatures, etc. Keys, bombs and treasure chest are already in as well as random loot drops from enemies. Also, 24 pets with different effects can accompany you on your adventure.

There's also a PvP arena for 2-4 players and a couple of quests and mini games you can complete.

For players who prefer straightforward side-scrolling action, there's a Party Mode where you only have weapons and permanent buffs, and players heal by eating food. The levels are linear, with procedurally selected room layouts and random enemies.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will probably remain the same.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I hope that players will use the Steam discussion boards to create new topics about game features, mechanics and balancing. My initial plan was to have new builds available every 5-6 weeks, but it has become much more often with new builds coming out on a weekly basis (except when completely new levels are added to the game). You can see the track record of development if you read the announcements section. Since I'm not a native English speaker, the community will also be able to help naming some of the items and pet animals in the game and give some cool or funny item descriptions.”

All 24 bosses are now in the game



Version 3.1.4 is online with the 4th desert boss: The War Elephant. This is an important milestone, because all the bosses I planned for the first full game release are now in the game.

The initial plan was actually 20 or 21 boss, but as the game has been developed many new ideas came and now we have 24. I do have some ideas for 4-5 more bosses, but those will come after Early Access.

Here's a short roadmap for the rest of Early Access development:

- Barbarian Hero with some special mechanics (shh, it's a secret)
- 12 special challenge modes to unlock the barbarian
- Hard mode
- 45 more achievements already planned "on paper", maybe more
- there might be some additional pets and items/weapons along the way
- new trailer for the game

I plan to exit Early Access in May this year if all goes as planned.

There are also some ideas that might be implemented before we exit EA, but most probably afterwards:

- more mounts: baby elephant, horse, deer, green baby dragon (spit poison)
- additional quests and special rooms
- more weapons and items

2 new desert bosses



Version 3.1.3 is online:

- final level layout for the 7th level (2 boss fights instead of only one)
- new desert boss: Medusa
- new desert boss: Thorn Reaper
- health bar under the player is now colored differently depending on the amount HP you have
- added missing sound effects for some enemies
- new bow weapon: Composite Bow, damage bonus when mounted
- added a new special shop on the battlements: 1-dollar store
- added new sound effects for the Wolf Machine in the dungeon
- added an option to turn off the item hover particle effect so the game runs smooth even on really old computers
- fixed vsync bug on MacOS X
- fixed a minor bug when enemies would sometimes look like they are holding a weapon in the hand while dying even though they dropped the weapon
- fixed the problem when a controller disconnects while you're on the character selection screen
- fixed bug when poisoned weapons would lose poison effect after you buff them with the Snake Staff
- fixed the amount of HP you get from the magic chest and smelted items when you have Luxury Food effect (5 gold = 1 coin = 1 HP * (effect + appetite))

About This Game

So there we were, minding our own business in the forest. It was kinda idyllic, you know? Peace, happiness, harmony with nature, and OH YEAH, it was extra awesome because, get this, MY MOM IS A WITCH?! Well, I guess TECHnically she is, but she’s more like a Harry Potter witch than a creepy Witch Hazel type, ‘cause bless her heart, she always uses her powers for good. Anyway, she’s the best, but this is also exactly when things went wrong.

See, all of a sudden the king's guards show up, all stuffy and businesslike, and they say they’re taking my mom to the castle, and there’s nothing I can do about it. I mean, I was totally just like, “yeah right, narcs” and I snuck my way right in, but now there’s all these enemies to defeat and items to use and pets to get, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg!

Apparently, somewhere along the way, somebody else just straight up STOLE a goblin artifact, and now THEY’RE in the castle somewhere too, and the goblins are pissed so they’ve started attacking. Lucky for me, this is a co-op game as well, so I can get a friend to help me, but MAN! Goblin artifacts? Missing parents? A thief's agenda? I guess that’s just what happens when you're a... SON OF A WITCH!

The Heroes




One to four players can select one of seven heroes with different starting weapons, as well as Melee, Magic and Archery skill levels. Local co-op, LAN and online multiplayer mode are available. In the current Early Access version, six characters are already available:

  • Knight (melee combat specialist, starts with armor that reduces damage)
  • Sorceress (ranged magic attack, can create food to heal players)
  • Druid (ranged magic attack, can add poison effect to any weapon)
  • Pyromancer (shoot fireballs, immune to fire)
  • Archer (master of bow and arrows, start with additional inventory slot)
  • Skeleton Ranger (cannot eat nor drink, collects bones from fallen enemies and gets stronger)

You can unlock characters by completing various quests in the game.

Items, weapons and loot




Boost your strength, magic and other abilities with new weapons, potions, scrolls and items you can discover on your adventure. Grab enemy weapons when they drop them or discover hidden treasure stashes. Here are some weapons and items already available:



The game already has over 120 items and weapons with different effects. Many items have synergies. For example drinking a Gold Diet potion allows you to eat gold, but if you find an Appetite potion as well it will boost the effect and enable you to restore a lot of health. Voodoo Doll allows you to hurt enemies from a distance, but if you combine if with a high-damage item like a Meteor Staff or a Bomb it can be much more effective.

Characters with good archery skills can combine different bows and arrows, for example:



Hitting an enemy would freeze it for a while, but after that passes, he will also be slow and much easier to fight against. Saving special arrows for bosses and difficult enemies is a good strategy.

Pets




Adopt one of 26 different pet companions. Each has a different effect. The Penguin freezes enemies. The Ram knocks them down. The Bat attacks in the air. The Chicken shows you the path with least enemies. The Dog fetches hard to reach items and weapons. The Turtle acts as an unbeatable decoy and the Bird's feathers improve your archery skill. If you find a Wolf to lead the pack and keep them in order, you can adopt multiple pets at the same time.

Always more to explore


The game has permadeath. Once you die, you start a new game. A different world is created on each playthrough. The layout of the levels is different, there are different numbers and types of enemies; and different treasures and items sold in shops. There are many spells the characters can use, and archers have a wide assortment of special types of bows and arrows at their disposal. Because of this, each new game poses a new challenge. You will get a subset of weapons, items and enemies and might need to use a different strategy. Any two subsequent plays could be quite different.

Various ways to complete levels


There's a big boss at the end of each level. You can beat him up with a melee weapon, petrify him with Medusa Arrows, or use a magic scroll to simply skip the battle and run to the next level. There are shops that you can try to loot if you can beat the shopkeeper's armed friends. Enemies drop usable items and weapons often. For example, a Goblin Shaman has a voodoo doll which you can use to mark enemies and hurt them from a distance. You can even toss the doll into a campfire and set enemies on fire, or anything else you can think of. Once you obtain the Staff of the Dead, you can raise an army of undead servants to fight for you. Alternatively, you can defeat the king and take his scepter, allowing you to summon an army of armored guards to help you.

Monsters and bosses




The final game play over seven areas: forest, battlements, the keep, dungeon, catacombs, desert and the frozen mountain. Each area has three or more specific bosses that randomly show up on different play-throughs.

Each area also has a different set of enemies, separated into the following factions:
  • Goblins
  • King's Guards
  • Thieves
  • Undead (skeletons, zombies, vampires)
  • Ice Mountain Clan
  • Desert Mercenaries
  • Animals (wild boars and dragons you can ride, bugs that drop weapon upgrades, bats, hornets, etc.)

Each faction has regular units and special ones that are bigger and harder to beat. Like this barbarian that the shop keepers like to hire for security:
