What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I'm experimenting with several new ideas in VR, and developing challenging gameplay, using your bow and spells is a skill, not just point and shoot. I'm eager to get community feedback on this, and what the general response is to various unique mechanics I intend to implement. Additionally, I am a solo developer, I work on this during the night when I finish my day-job, so it's important for me to focus my efforts, and early access allows me to discover which aspects of the game are most important to my players so that I can develop those features first.

I am a new developer on steam and in VR, nobody knows who I am, during early access I hope to show you who I am, and what you can expect to see from me.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“8 Months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The early access build will include game modes
- Endless
- Last Stand

Full release will additionally include
- Campaign
- Minigames
- NPC Allies to fight alongside you (rather than always fighting alone)

I hope to implement an immersive Campaign mode that takes combat into many different areas of the castle, even the open skies, in the sewers, and on the frontline of the enemy siege, in fact I envision extra chapters that take you completely outside the castle, to remote outposts and the open road. There's lots of adventure/puzzle/exploration work I also intend to build into the Castles interior, while the enemy is regrouping between attacks, you will be exploring the castle and unlocking its mystical secrets - which will in turn, provide new tools and skills to help you fight back the hordes.

At the moment, the Endless mode has more exploration built in to it than I first planned, this is to compensate for the lack of a proper Campaign mode. The Endless mode might get simplified slightly once the campaign is released (where some of it will have moved into the campaign experience). But I'll wait until I get more feedback before making a decision about what direction to take the 'Endless' game mode.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Endless and Last Stand Modes are playable. Basic Tutorial included.

There is a 'Demo' campaign included, it is just a single mission to show the type of cool stuff I'm working on, but I recommend you play the Endless mode first, before previewing the Campaign. (as the mission included is very far through the story, and assumes you can play quite well already)”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“There won't be any significant pricing changes”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I am really hoping for your feedback so that I can improve the overall feel of the game. I'm trying to build a skill based (but still highly exciting!) archery defense, it's going to be a hard balance to get right and I'm going to need your help to do it. Please write on the community page or e-mail me via my website with any feedback and suggestions you have - I'm all ears!”

UPDATES 2017-01-03 (Build EA04)

Local Co-Op now available!

Have a friend play as the Fairy using keyboard/mouse or gamepad!
This support hero has 7 useful spells to help out the VR player.
Including remotely control/guide arrows!

The fairy is still confined to the players immediate physical space, and is teleported whenever the player passes through a doorway/portal

Co-Op can be used in any game mode, just tag in
I have put together a quick guide for using co-op:

New Content
  • New steam achievement "Spell Collector", unlock 6 new spells to get this achievement.
  • Local Co-Op, as mentioned above

  • In classic mode, player can now put arrows back into hip quiver (if bow is not equiped)
  • Minor improvements to main menu and to the Arcade style of play

  • Fixed profile bug relating to steam names with non-alphanumeric symbols
  • Fixed grip bug "hip quiver full" message while putting arrows away
  • Fixed music volume setting, now adjusting in realtime
  • Fixed settings ui, sliders work on all angles
  • Added several retry attempts for highscore submissions

P.S/F.Y.I: Nobody actually requested Co-Op, and I had no plans to add it.. but after an Open VR week at my little home studio, It was something I wished was there so I could interact and help the players, so I added it! I was also quite inspired by some of the games that already included some form of local interaction (there isn't very many of them yet though, which is a shame! so this shall be one more!)

UPDATES 2016-12-25 (Build EA03)

Smaller Play Areas now supported

The minimum play area requirement is now reduced to 2.4m x 2.2m
The game can now successfully adjust down to this size without any play-ability issues. One thing to note though, any area below 2.7m x 2.2m will not have access to the staircase dungeon, and unlockables normally found in that room are moved elsewhere. Unfortunately the staircase mechanics do need a certain amount of space to work properly (this was the primary reason I kept the minimum requirement high originally). With this change, I hope more people can jump on board and enjoy the game.

New Content
  • New dungeon added! (this one has moving platforms!)
  • New unlockable spell ("Rapid Fire")

  • On Easy/Normal difficulties, you get a chance to explore the caste after just 2 waves instead of 4 (on normal difficulty, this only applies if your XP is below 5.0)
  • Improvements to some room-scaled obstacles (that most of you won't notice TBH)
  • Minor improvements to the main menu

  • Fix for [unknown] highscore names on slow connections
  • Adjusted back-quiver collision zone to improve over-the-shoulder grabs and lessen chances of false bundle grabs off the hip
  • XP indicator now showing decimal place properly (was incorrectly rounding to nearest whole number)
  • Fixed issue where sometimes quiting Last Stand mode would leave you in limbo in the loading screen
  • Fixed a tutorial instruction which said "hold trigger" instead of "pull trigger" (I am so sorry if this messed you up!)
  • Fixed major room-scaling issue where chaperone was used instead of manually adjusted play area size

If you want spoiler video of the new dungeon and spell, check twitter i'll post it soon. @LordOfTheStack

Happy exploring! good luck trying to find them :)

About This Game

Defense of Castle Chilly is a Virtual Reality game written specifically with room-scaling in mind
The player uses Archery and Magic to defend the castle from invaders.

Several stand out features will make Castle Chilly different to any other wave defender you've played.
(One feature I'm excited about, is that this is a 100% room-scale walking experience, no 'blink' style teleportation. Magic doorways are your passage to other rooms, you'll be walking in circles and back and forth in the real world, but exploring a vast castle and battlefield in the virtual world!)

Skill and intuition are a must if you expect to stand in the way of the invading forces.
The bow and arrow mechanics are far more involved than your average archery shooter - it's up to you to keep your quivers re-stocked, and to learn advantageous techniques like speed-loading, enchanting, as well as plenty of unadvertised tricks that I hope you get the pleasure of discovering yourself

In Defense of Castle Chilly, the invading forces goal is the castle gate, so in that way this is a defender game, but they're not exactly going to just let you stop them - so you'll also need to defend yourself at times as well, while still ensuring the castle itself remains safe!

But wait! it takes time to mount an attack - while the enemy is busy regrouping, you are granted time to explore the inside of the Castle! find useful tools and upgrades to help you fight, discovering mystical rooms and unlocking the castles secrets along the way.

The overall experience is Defense, Survival, and Discovery.

Game Modes

  • Endless: The goblin army mounts their attacks in progressvely more difficult waves. There is time inbetween each wave for you to explore the interior of the castle to resupply, solve puzzles and explore. Items found within the castle may differ slightly each time you play.

If you die, the game is over. If the castle gate is breached - you will fall back inside the castle to protect the throne until your inevitable defeat (see also 'Last Stand')
  • Last Stand: This mode allows you to skip the rest of the gameplay and go straight to a variation of the throne room scenario (this is when the castle has been breached, and it is your duty to protect the throne until your last breath).

In 'Last Stand' there is no rest, and nowhere to run, just you standing between the throne and the invading forces. Kill as many as you can, survive as long as possible!
  • Campaign Demo: Game is in Early Access, so included is a short preview of the campaign. The complete campaign is still being created and will not be made available until full release (feedback and suggestions are very welcome!)

Play Styles

  • Classic Mode: Take full advantage of the advanced archery techniques previously described. You have a Hip & Back quiver and must properly manage your supply of arrows. This allows for cool techniques like speed-shooting and spell stacking, and also means improved arrows can be found and used
  • Arcade Mode: If you aren't too keen on reloading, or you find classic mode tedious or difficult, play Arcade instead - you have only a back quiver, and your arrows are unlimited (no reloading!), just casual shoot'em'up fun! however you won't be able to take advantage of advanced techniques or improved arrows. The interior of the castle will also be simplified to remove irrelevant items

Local Co-Op

You can have a buddy help you out with the keyboard/mouse or gamepad. The second player joins in as a small flying Fairy, capable of shooting magic bolts and casting spells designed specifically for assistance (The Fairy is a support character). Co-Op can be used on any game mode and any play style (ie: Endless/Last Stand/Campaign), just press 'A' on your gamepad or 'Ctrl' on the keyboard or click the mouse to tag in as the Fairy. Spells include healing, shielding, fireballs and the ability to remotely guide the players arrows!
