What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Crystal Control II is primarily a local multiplayer experience. Like most traditional fighting games, this means that a lot of playtesting and subsequent tweaking is required to ensure each character is fun without being too overpowered or too weak when matched against other characters. The goal of this Early Access period is to get the game in the hands of many smart players who will inevitably discover individual character strengths and weaknesses so we can adjust accordingly.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We'll likely stay in Early Access for as long as we feel necessary to get the character balance to a level we're happy with. This process will move faster with more players providing valuable feedback!

The game is also set up to collect various data points about your play sessions so we can analyze the data to learn more about which characters are the most/least popular and other relevant information (so simply playing while connected to the internet helps us a great deal)!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to update the game to improve character and background animations as well as the user interface over the course of our Early Access period.

If the multiplayer is well received and there is interest, we hope to explore the following features post-Early Access:

  • A single player "story" mode
  • A training mode for practicing against a CPU with simple AI
  • A tournament mode that generates brackets

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access build includes a local multiplayer mode with all 8 playable characters available. Each character is fully functional in terms of gameplay abilities, but these abilities are subject to change as player feedback comes in and we make re-balancing decisions.

Characters have varying levels of art and animation, so there may be some rough (or non-existent) edges. This is largely intentional, as some assets may be contingent on gameplay behavior and we want to avoid forcing our art team to rework assets multiple times throughout development.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We do not currently have any plans to raise the price after leaving Early Access, but that may change depending on the addition of any single player content.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community involvement is crucial for the success of Crystal Control II. As mentioned above, a game of this nature requires a lot of playtesting and subsequent tweaking to ensure the game is fun and fair for all players. Of course, our team is not representative of "all players", so we need to build a community that can tell us what does and doesn't work for them so we can adjust accordingly.

Our hope is that players will use Steam's community features to share their favorite strategies with other players and also share their best/worst moments with the game with us so we can take those experiences into consideration when making future updates.”

About This Game

CAUTION! Crystal Control II is local multiplayer only and requires at least one gamepad to play. We may include a single player mode in the future, but online play is not likely to happen anytime soon (if ever).

Crystal Control II is a competitive bullet hell game for two players. Choose from 8 characters, each with their own unique abilities, as you fight for control of the battlefield. Capturing crystals gives you more firepower, which means more bullets for your opponent to dodge. Capture majority crystals and unleash your special attack!

  • Local multiplayer action for two! Fight for control of the crystals to gain more firepower and take out your opponent...you only need to get one hit on them to win!
  • Easy to learn, hard to master! We've seen players of all skill levels pick up the game and understand it's simple controls. Don't let the simplicity fool you, though! The skill ceiling can be quite high, allowing room for the competitive folks to shine.
  • Eight playable characters! Each character has different movement speeds, charge times, and "Control" abilities (which can be executed after capturing more than half of the total crystals on-screen). Some even have unique charge shots!

Some notes about controller support

Crystal Control II is best played with two gamepads, but we also support gamepad vs keyboard matches if you only have one gamepad. We also plan to include a mode which allows two players to share a single gamepad.

We do not currently have any plans to support a keyboard only mode for Versus. Most keyboards have a limit on simultaneous key presses that is much too low for the number of keys Crystal Control II would require (which means that key presses would be dropped randomly and create unfair matches). However, any future single player content WILL support keyboard.
