I've never reviewed a thing on Steam and there are stome truly great games out there. This game definitely deserves a review. If you're trying to find that game that is just the right combination of RPG, strategy, and warfare, this is the game for you. This one hit the spot and I hope that there will be more games just like it.

If I had to say anything negative about the game, and I'm loathe to do so, then I'd mention that its graphics are not quite on par with other titles. To be clear, this doesn't mean that they are bad, exactly but that they are just not as good as other titles.

I'd also mention that, while the game does all three of the aforementioned genres (RPG, Strategy, and Warfare) very well, it is not perfect in any of them. It has elements from all of them, but if you want to play an excellent strategy game, you will have to go else- where (Any Paradox title, Civilization, or Total War). If you want an excellent RPG then you will want to buy such titles as Dark Souls, The Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age... etc (the list is long), and if you want something that is more focused on the warfare elements that appear in this game, I'd recommend the Dynasty warriors series. In short, the game has elements of all of these genres, but isn't the best representative of any of them.

I hope they keep improving and release another one.
Awesome game.

Great RPG game. Gives a great deal of satisfaction (especially when you win a battle). If you like Castle themes and riding around like a knight then this game is for you.

My story:

Play with Floris Mod (2.54) installed
Join Vaegirs, enlist in King's Army, continue to buy land in capital city.
Stay loyal until becoming a fully-fledged two-handed-mallet-wielding horseman.
Upgrade Prisoner Management to 3 and decide it's time to desert.
"Some of your friends in the army wouldn't mind deserting with you."
okaywhattheheck.jpeg
All of the low-tier grunts of the King's army join me, accumulating to 104 warriors.
dayum.gif
Become a mercenary for the Vaegirs and begin searching for companions.
Accidentally bump into King of the Nords.
Nord King gives task to collect taxes in his capital city.
evilpokerface.png
Proceed to collect taxes and never return the money.
Receive payment from the invested land and mercenary fee from the Vaegirs.
Buy epic weapons and armour for me and my companions.
Suddenly realise, you're playing early-game, already have top-tier gear, have over 100 men, while all other lords are still struggling with 40-70 men

104/10 would cause a grunt uprising again.

This is quite the game, possibly being one of the best games ever made.

Its so good that i am unsure of how to write this review.

Well then, lets start with the base game.

Mount and Blade: Warband is many things. In this game you can start an army, recruiting peasants from villages and training them into one hell of an army, an army that will conquer the world. There are 6 nations in the base game, each with different units and weapons.

They are (from top to bottom) the Nords, an infantry based nation specializing in axes and throwing weapons with mediocre archers and no cavalry. Their top tier infantry is the strongest in the game. They are historically based on the Norse

The Vaegirs, a somewhat well rounded nation with fantastic archers, their infantry uses mainly two handed weapons. Their top tier archers are the finest non crossbow units in the game, though they arent suited for long engagments due to how fast they use their ammo. They are historically based on the Slavs.

The Swadians, again, a well rounded nation, this time specializing in cavalry, they use traditional medieval western european weapons like crossbows and two handed swords. They have the best cavalry in the game and are a bit of a community favorite. They are historically based on Germans.

The Khergits, a VERY cavalry heavy nation, almost all of their units are cavalry, they use shortbows, sabres and hafted blades (similar to the japanese naginata). They arent particularly good as far as cav goes, they are the only nation with horse archers which makes them excellent for kiting, though as far as facing a professional army, they arent going to do well. Would recommend for getting early game cavalry. They are historically based on the Mongols.

The Rhodoks, a very defensive nation with fantastic crossbows, they use cleavers, spears, crossbows, warhammers and picks (i particularly like the Glaives). They have the best crossbows in the game but lack cavalry and have somewhat bad infantry. Would recommend mixing crossbows with Nord infantry, they make a mean seige army. They are historically based on the Venetians and the French.

And lastly, the Sarranids, Jack of all trades but master of none, they use scimitars, shortbows, maces and axes. All around quite balanced. They are historically based on the Arabs.

I wont go into the mechanics, there are quite a few guides about them, and also plenty of lets plays.

And now we get to the big thing. Mods.

There are tons of enhancment and total conversion mods for this game, even a few multiplayer ones.

Want to play in feudal Japan? There is a mod for that, its called Gekokujo.

Feel like some crusades? Quite a few mods for that, Sands of Faith for instance.

Like yourself some light fantasy? Perisno and Prophecy of Pendor have your back.

Dark age Britain? Brytenwalda.

Fantasy Warhammer? Warsword Conquest.

Multiplayer RP with a somewhat cancerous community? Persistent World.

Plus many many more.

Mount and Blade: Warband is one of the most addictive on the Steam cilent you can get, Yeah it maybe rough around the edges (aka the graphics) but at it's core contains so much charm. The game is based on a medieval contient in which you're thrown in to do, well, whatever you want really. Become a king of the land, a loyal vassel, a peaceful merchent, a traditor, and more. It's truly open-ended with you choosing the story that you want for it. The game also contains one of the best combat systems with sword fighting in awhile. It's simple with it's up, down, left, right fighting system but laborious to master. Timing your attacks and blocks in the exact right order as you predict your enemey movements is not as easy as you think. Now, onto my favourite part of the game, the modding. The modding is extremely talented and large. With anything you could think of. Romans, check. Samurai, check. The First World War, also check. Greco-Prussian Wars, check and so much more. Also, the mulitplayer is damn fun with a large varity of gamemodes that will have you hacking and slashing other players for hours on end as well as a pretty freindly playerbase. Now, onto the pros and cons to sum up this review

PROS
-Amazing Combat System
-Great Modding Community
-Open-Ended
-Addictive
-Great Mutiplayer
-Replayabilty

CONS
-Graphics

Overall score for this game is a 9.9/10. One of the best games I've played in years.

Warband is a unique type of rpg: it has no story at all. The sandbox nature of Warband allows you to freely juggle between all of its gameplay aspects at will.

You can: trade as a merchant, serve as a vassal in 1 of the 6 medieval kingdoms (and change your allegiance as you desire), fight at tournaments for glory and gold, court noble ladies in secret, in hope of gaining influence in high society, guard caravans and work for guilds, own productive enterprises, become a lord of villages, castles and even cities, dedicate your life to protecting poor and defenseless, serve as a cynical mercenary, killing without question or hesitation, be a cunning and power hungry  manipulator, starting civil wars and pulling the strings from the shadows, become a renowned marshal, known for his military prowess and tactical genius, rob villages and caravans as lawless brigand, become a confidant to powerful lords and kings, or, if you re truly worthy, ascend as an emperor of the known world yourself.

The best part is that you can be all those things AT THE SAME TIME. Role playing in warband is more of a metaphysical concept that in most RPGs, meaning that you don't just play a role in a given situation or a plot, but rather create the situation for role playing yourself.  I struggle to remember a lot of games with this level of role playing  freedom and immersion.

The combat is something else entirely. Deceptively simple, frighteningly realistic: it takes skill and practice to win a fight against superior number of foes. 3-4 is manageable, 7-10 is a suicide.

The customization is as deep as the ocean: one handed arms, two handed, pole arms, shields, bows, crossbows, throwing weapons, battle horses, the list goes on and on...

Rpg system is robust and flexible: horse archery, tracking, knowledge of medicine or siege weaponry, trading or tactics...

There is no story in warband. No predetermined path. Except the one that you create for yourself. You are the master of your own fate. And what a glorious fate that is!

Cons
- needs mods to polish/ include features that should be there.

- the AI Lords cheat on the main map (not in the battles)

-Sieges are fun for a while but become tedious fast

-AI soldiers can't use spears effectively. Players can, but AI can't figure it out.

-Game slows down once you become a powerful lord in the game. Becomes tedious at times.

-Game feels like it needs more features even though it is full of cool and interesting features.

Pros
-The combat is extremely difficult and extremely fun. There's a reason many new games copy the M&B combat style.

-The game is as difficult as you want it to be. It's a very custimizable game. You can change the difficulty of pretty much everything in this game.

-While it sucks that mods have to make the game as good as possible, the mods in this game are amazing.

-Taleworlds, the creators of this game, love the community. They want to give players what they want.

-Commanding soldiers in battles feels really, really good.

-The economics in this game are surprisingly deep. So deep that I can't really easily describe it.

-The multiplayer is really good, a lot of fun.

Summary: While Warband has many flaws, mods get rid of those flaws for the most part. All in all, this game is one of my favorite games of all time. If you love medieval strategy, kingdom management, politics, and combat then there's no game out there right now that does what Warband does. There's a reason this game made in 2010 is still extremely popular. Can't wait for Bannerlord to come out.

Mods that I recommend

Floris: Its Warband as it should be. It includes a lot of amazing new features, items, and improves combat.

Prophesy of Pendor: The most popular fantasy mod. It's pretty good, but doesn't include as many features as Floris.

Of course, theres also a WARHAMMER mod, a Lord of the Rings mod, Chinese/Japanese mods, a historical Europe/Middle East mod, and multiple Game of Thrones mods.
