What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The feedback so far has shown that people expect Kodon to work for vastly different uses, from casual to professional modeling. Thus, many people will consider it to be in an early stage of development.

For many people, Kodon will seem like a early product at this stage.

By buying into Early Access, you get the opportunity to play with the first roomscale sculpting program today, and you get to help us decide which features should be prioritized for the final version.”

Approximately how long will this software be in Early Access?

“About two months, with a final build out in late July.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“* Some way of editing colors / spraying textures
* Spinning tool to create round shapes
* Technique to accurately create flat shapes
* Bugs will be removed
* Further optimization
* Other good ideas we get from users along the way”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“In Early Access:

* Kodon is intended to fill a similar niche as Tilt Brush - creating things in VR - but with the ability to communicate with existing 3D programs. This is especially true for Early Access - Kodon is a rough sculpting tool where you can play around and create ideas.
* This is not a professional 3D program - there is no ability to colorize, add bumpmapping or similarly, and you can not edit and control individual vertices. Subdivision and decimation is done automatically via a dynamic quality algorithm.
* One known bug in the dynamic quality algorithm causes textures to "crumple" patterns when drawing while zoomed in on small objects.
* Sometimes, objects become corrupt and you need to undo / load.
* There is no sound, only haptic feedback.
* The amount of detail you can add is at this point dependent on your CPU.”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If the app becomes mostly used by professional users, a price adjustment might be necessary to compensate for support and feature needs.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will be following Reddit and the Steam store page closely, and participating on /r/vive in particular, discussing directly with users. Updates will be posted on the store page, as well as new videos.”

v0.50 soon! Meanwhile, try some of it in [beta]

We've thought long and hard on this version. The brain model took about 2 minutes to put together with the new crease and move tools

v0.50 will be the version marking roughly halfway (50%) finished development of Kodon. This version will include a lot of the technology gained from the Royal Academy of Arts exhibition work (you know.. the delay where we went silent for over a month), as well as new changes suggested by our pro sculptor Emil to bring Kodon more in directon of existing sculpting software (like ZBrush).

Furthermore, several bugfixes are in, including (as it seems) finally having returned Win7 support to Kodon! (removing the "freeze" problem) Also, the "white flashes" (framedrops returning you to the SteamVR lobby) have been minimized.

You can go to the [beta] branch (rightclick Kodon in Steam, Properties, choose the BETAS-tab and choose "beta -" in the pulldown menu. Ignore the "code" field) and check out some of the upcoming features:

* 1.5 million polygon limit per object (unlimited in principle, but current version is RAM heavy - will fix when optimized)
* Move-tool (also known as "grab" in other programs)
* Fold-tool (also known as "crease" in other programs)
* Falloff-control on all tools
* Full vertex paint in all modes

More is obviously coming with the "actual" v0.50 (in 1-2 weeks from this announcement) - a new default environment, new tools, UX improvements and heavy optimizations.

hello, Fold

hello, Move

hello, Brush falloff control

Welcome to Emil! ("ZBrush version" coming)

Picture of Emil before his recent haircut

We're proud to announce our partnership with Emil Klingberg of North Pixel, a professional ZBrush and 3ds Max modeler. Emil will be working on product development and UX for Kodon, as well as testing and creating promo material.

Emil will start by overseeing addition of important ZBrush features such as Move, surface-locked sculpting and more. This should result in a version which specifically addresses the needs of ZBrush users, in the coming weeks.

This version will fix most of the bugs in the current branches, and introduce the gained functionality from the various branches. Apologies for the wait.

Emils has already played around a bit with Freedraw:

About This Software

Kodon is a 3D sculpting program for roomscale VR. It allows you to freely shape objects in 1:1 roomscale. You can map up physical objects in your room to be viewed in VR, allowing you to use physical desks and tools for stability and precision in the 3D sculpting process. The idea is to provide functionality that can partly or wholly replace the sculpting process in

Note that Kodon is

1) EARLY ACCESS - meaning "under development" or alpha build, where you should expect crashes, lags and occasional problems on new versions.

2) A program which requires quite a bit from your PC. Standard "VR Ready" specs are not necessarily enough. Please refer to the minimum system requirements.

System Requirements

    • OS: Windows 8
