What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“In Early Access:

* Kodon is intended to fill a similar niche as Tilt Brush - creating things in VR - but with the ability to communicate with existing 3D programs. This is especially true for Early Access - Kodon is a rough sculpting tool where you can play around and create ideas.
* This is not a professional 3D program - there is no ability to colorize, add bumpmapping or similarly, and you can not edit and control individual vertices. Subdivision and decimation is done automatically via a dynamic quality algorithm.
* One known bug in the dynamic quality algorithm causes textures to "crumple" patterns when drawing while zoomed in on small objects.
* Sometimes, objects become corrupt and you need to undo / load.
* There is no sound, only haptic feedback.
* The amount of detail you can add is at this point dependent on your CPU.”

Will this software be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If the app becomes mostly used by professional users, a price adjustment might be necessary to compensate for support and feature needs.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will be following Reddit and the Steam store page closely, and participating on /r/vive in particular, discussing directly with users. Updates will be posted on the store page, as well as new videos.”

Kodon v0.55 full version is live!



NOTE: v0.55 in Kodon, an Early Access product, means in our terms we are about 55% done, expected v1.0 later this year. Each build should be seen as a "prealpha" for now. Thanks for your patience and support!

Change/Feature List:

  • Undo/Redo
    Fixed the undo/redo issues and crashes.
  • New Undo History Slider
    We added a new undo history slider that allows you to quickly scroll through your sculpting timeline.
  • Menu rework
  • New Voxel Save option
    You can now save your voxelspace creations and load / keep working on them.
  • New Environment ("InfGrid").
    Simplistic optimized environment with an infinite floor and a neutral skybox.
  • Ambient Occlusion.
    Simple AO-effect that you can turn on off. PS: a little slow and unoptimized in this iteration.
  • Voxel Engine Speed
    We have reworked the voxel engine in order to improve draw speed, and you should notice a considerably smoother sculpting experience via the standard tools.
  • Voxel Engine Capacity
    We’ve also reworked the algorithm to increase the amount of voxels you can work with. At this point you are, in terms of detail, only limited by your memory and GPU.
  • Memory and Optimization
    We have reduced the memory footprint drastically with this version allowing you to draw massive models even with just 16GB of ram. And with a 1080 Ti we are reaching 10 million triangles before any “VR-breaking” slowdown.
  • New: Improved Square Voxel Brush
    We changed the Square brush, it is now able to rotate with your tool.

    Known issues:

    • At 8Gb setups, you can bottom out your RAM usage, possibly forcing a restart.
    • Short lags will occur for some cases of memory allocation (when you have sculpted for a long while).
    • There are occasional issues with .obj and ply import. The voxel save should be pretty safe.
    • Some occasional artifacts (small dots and normal lines) on the models visible at low zoom levels.

    Please report bugs and suggestions in the Steam forums. We will respond and give you tips to fix any issues, and all bug reports and suggestions are very useful to us!

Kodon v0.55 Beta is live!



Since v0.50 we have been working hard on bringing you the next level of Kodon. Our focus lately has been our core Voxel sculpting engine, and we wanted to get it right - sorry for the delay. This time we definitely feel like it’s a major step up towards the type of performance we are looking for.

About This Software

Kodon is a 3D sculpting program for roomscale VR. It allows you to freely shape objects in 1:1 roomscale, using both volumetric and surface-related sculpting techniques. We make Kodon first and foremost for ourselves, because it is a tool we need. We try to deliver a user experience that should make both casuals, people who are completely new to 3D art, semi-pro / pro users able to expand their range of abilities in Kodon.

Note:

1) Kodon is Early Access - meaning it is a prealpha build. We try to minimize bugs in versions we offer, but there will be bugs and unfinished features in build.

2) Kodon requires quite a bit from your PC. Standard "VR Ready" specs are not necessarily enough. Please refer to the minimum system requirements.
