Regretfully I will have to give this game a negative review. (Keeping in mind I used a keyboard and mouse, and flight games are not my usual genre..)Here are the reasons why:
-Good usage of videos for campaign, but horrible voiceacting, and ultimately it is a bore.
-Horrible bombing. Must switch views and look around constantly.
-I appreciate the "realism" of the game, but 2 shot kills in realistic mode suck when you get poppped out of nowhere, and its hard to move and look around from cockpit, and endless stalling make the controls irritating. It is hard to turn even remotely sharply without stalling, which slows the game down to a bore.
-I found it particularly difficult to shoot down aitcraft sometimes, and it appears that the enemy planes are not subjected to the same irritating stalls.
-Sometimes enemies seemed to "run away" and it felt unnatural.
-Massive progression wall on one level, approx 20 percent through game. (Then boring after it)
-DRM is broken.

I must admit, I really enjoyed flight simulator.. but didnt enjoy this game for very long.

If you are a WW II fan, you must owe this flying simulator. The graphic are stunning and gorgeous. You really feel like you are in a cocpit of a Spitfire or a Hurricane.

There is no story or that kind of stuff, which is a pitty. Nevertheless, the battles are epic and playing this game even on realism is prety challenging. A JOYSTICK is a "MUST-NEED". I don't find it that entertaining without a joystick.

Overall, a MUST BUY for a WW II flying fan :-)

Great combat flight game if you don't care about multiplayer. Good graphics too. If you want multiplayer, you would be better off with War Thunder by the same devs. Whatever you do, don't install yuPlay.

I don't usually write reviews. This called for it though. There is a game called Birds of steel on xbox 360. It is basically the same game. Except in this game ( wings of prey ) the A.I. is ridiculous. I loved Birds of steel. It was such a good ww2 fighter sim. In this, you will be one of 50 allied forces flying around or floating below, and the A.I. will only aim at you. And your friendly A.I. do not do a good job of watching your back. While it takes 50 hits to kill an enemy plane, one shot will kill your weak bird. So if you can imagine being in a war except every enemy soldier only has the capability to aim at you and only you, then you can imagine this game. I played on realistic difficulty there is a degree higher called simulator which has more controls to pay attention to and enemy planes have no markers. It's not even worth it when on realistic it is IMPOSSIBLE to pass a lot of these mission without dying. Literally impossible. You will never stand a chance against 20 enemy forces who can only aim at you and no one else on the battlefield. It was fun for a minute but then it just got frustrating. Seriously frustrating. I wish it were more like Birds of steel.

This takes too much effort to set up.
First I had to find a configuration file and change some crap to "yes" because it was being a jerk
Then, I configured my joystick, and ..... oh wait, I need to be logged in, in order to actually play anything. OK... let me exit.
Steam: "Wings of prey -Running"
"no, no it isn't"
Steam: "yes, it is still running"
"NO, NO IT ISN'T"

So wait, I need to restart my computer every time I exit the main program in order to restart the damned game itself?
and what the hell is YU?

Crap should be steamlined at this point. I shouldn't need to jump through hoops.
Pressing play, should mean just that.... not more and more setting up.
I haven't even gotten to play the game yet. Frankly, at this point. I don't want to.

This is a really well executed game. The settings give you a lot of control for the difficulty. I like arcade flight combat games but with relatively realistic joystick controls. This game is fun to play, looks great, and really puts most other games of the genre to shame.

The Gaijin game that feels fun to play with a joystick, albeit there's really no multiplayer anymore afaik. Better than War Thunder because they didn't abuse people who enjoy flying with a stick.

Oh I love this game........Take a bit of mucking around to get it working now a days but once you do its fun..
Flight model to suit all skills and moods is great as somtimes i cant be bothered with simulation mode so the arcade model backs it off enought to have fun to go shoot down z germans.
GFX are great for its age, online is dead so if you want that get War Thunder buy same makers.
Missions are good and for most part enjoyable.

UPDATE: Ok so i got sick of the YuPlay pop up to register crap so re bought the game DRM free from Gaijin site.. then thought if i copied the files and exes into Steam version then i keep progessing my steam game. IT WORKED both versions use same game saves anyway and now no stupid pop up crap from YuPlay. Mulitiplayer is gone they push you towards WAR THUNDER for that but off line game is nice and solid and i do enjoy they ambiance of WoP

This is an early version of the game WAR THUNDER by Gaijin. It wasn't bad but it isn't no diffrent than WAR THUNDER.
If you try to play it by mouse and keyboard it is impossible as the keys are every where, then if you hook up a stick you have to spend forever adjusting the senitivity to who you want it. Which is what I dodn't want to do I want to be able to launch the game and play with out having to spend forever editing controls.

Then you can't do Multiplayer any more which is miss leading as steam lists it as having multiplayer (Yucan'tPlay).

Inother words don't buy this game just go and play WAR THUNDER if you want a gaijin game.

Wings of Prey is comparable to that hot girl you had a crush on in high school. She was beautiful, the game is gorgeous. She had such elegance; WoP is very polished as a game. She has these abundance of little quirks (twirling hair, giggle, etc) that made you go wild, WoP has features to drool for (storyline, video replay, squadron control, etc).

Then one day you just don’t get excited to spend time together anymore, the romance fades, you realize she has no personality and is becoming obnoxious with her emotional issues. The replay ability is lost, you get frustrated with the poor aerial match-ups, there is no customization or sand box mode, and your AI enemies always seem to defy the laws of physics.

But no matter what, it was a fun ride while it lasted. 80%

If you're looking for a flight simulator game, but without all the fuss, and good keyboard/mouse controls, then I can highly recommend this game.

Training mode is very open and pretty much lets you do whatever you want - be that combating other fighters, or flying under low bridges in a bomber.

Unfortunaly there doesn't seem to be much of a mod scene, but overall I can highly recommend this game.

So far I am loving this game, basically to me its a single player version of war thunder and thats what i've been looking for, for now im playing with a mouse and keyboard and it does have its frustrating moments, but soon ill get a joystick and hopefully it makes the gameplay much better.
the $20 I spent were very worth it, i recommended this game to anyone who has played War Thunder before.

I had the game for 360 but decided to get it for PC so I can use my flightstick (Thrustmaster [that's what she said] HOTAS X)

So far I have yet to notice a difference in gameplay. However, the graphics look really great, I have it on ultra-turbo-awesome and it's very noticeably different from 360.

The best part is the immense configurability for joysticks. It's so good that I spent the first 45 minutes just making small changes to the layouts, including sensitivity of axes, deadzones, and non-linearity. With a little effort, you can get your dream control scheme on any joystick.

All this for $10 is a solid deal in my opinion. Will update if anything changes (about halfway through campaign so far)

I hadn't played this game for quite a while, but recently I did a major PC upgrade and reinstalled it. I had forgotten what a fun little game this is. It really sucks that the multiplayer is degraded, but it is still fun.

If you are looking for a high fidelity sim then look elsewhere. This is not a study sim like Falcon 4, DCS A-10C, or the IL-2 Series. It is a bit arcadey but the physics are fairly responsive and realistic and the visuals are outstanding. Campaign missions flow in their own way, and you get to experience several different sides to WW2 flying. With the addition of the Luftaffe DLC it seems to provide a reasonable all round experience.

Combat is a bit arcadey with fairly predictable AI and an overwhelming urge to be the lone saviour of every battle. It is, however, easy to task wingmen to perform essential roles thus relieving you of the burden of the missio0n so you can go round shooting everything that flies :-).

As for controls, being a bit of a flight sim nutter, I used one of my simple joysticks with no issues. I cannot comment on any other control method as I have not tried them and don't really intend to. Joystick was simple to set up and allowed me to use almost every function from the stick without having to resort ot the keyboard very often at all.

All in all this is an enjoyable semi-sim. I would recommend it if you want an easy to get into light sim. For a flight sim nut...probably not unless you are looking for an entertaining session of blowing s**t up.

I'm not a flight sim guy but after 20-30 hours of training, I was able to figure out how to take off, fly, prevent my plane from stalling, get a plane out of a spiral, and actually destroy a few enemie planes...and then land (usually) - WHILE PLAYING ON SIMULATION MODE.

Good fun but you need to put in the time.

I recommend for someone looking for a sim but anyone looking for an arcade game, go elsewhere. This is not for you.

Reiviews are so funny, people complain about not being able to play the game any more due to DRM.

They set up a new computer/system and DRM does not let them play the game again?

How does that fit with the update notes from 2011/2012 on the storepage: DRM removed?

Think we live in a time where DRM is the bad guy for every human error? :)

The game still is a nice one, if you have a non launching wings of prey through steam just navigate to the game's folder in your steam files and start it with the launcher.exe and have fun.

If you are new to the game...account is to be created at gaijin, no more yuplay.

And if you got the dlc...coed must be applied in the launcher, not in steam.

Have fun. .)

A cool game at first, but ultimately it runs into a progression brick wall during a certain Stalingrad mission that was just impossible for me to beat no matter how hard I tried. I -really- liked this game until that point, but once that happened.... no. I later tried to get this game installed to give it another try, but the game outright didn't work anymore. So for that, this game is a solid "no" from me.

But... these are the same devs behind War Thunder, and much of what was in this game has carried over into the single-player missions found in that game. So really this game is entirely uneccesary anyway since WT is free and isn't broken. So if you really want to play a WW2 plane game, play that instead. Or something else. Just not this.

Brief summary of Wings of Prey:
A "Holywood" flight combat sim. Looks and sounds great, exciting to play, but lacks in mission design, AI and flight model.

+Lots of missions and planes.
+Great visuals. Variety of day/night and weather conditions. Nice effects: glare, cockpit scratches, damage (bullet holes, damaged ailerons, broken gauges etc.). Cockpits look great.
+Immersive 5.1 sound.

-Some of the missions in the campaign are frustratingly difficult. Some are bugged (e.g. objectives not triggering correctly).
-Stalls are a bit unrealistic.
-Poor documentation: Some things are never explained, like how the I-16 engine will die if you pull negative Gs, or how to use propeller pitch and radiator.
-Haven't played MP, but looks like online is basically dead.

~TrackIR is a big advantage, both for watching your six in dogfights and for spotting ground targets.
~Joystick (preferably HOTAS) is a must. Gamepad or keyboard+mouse won't cut it.

This game is/was great. Unfortunately the devs left it alone and now they are developing a breaking thru towards the War Thunder, which still in the same base theater (Second World War), but with much more airplanes and Tanks!!!

Great game(s) by Gaijin.
