Greetings Tributes!

We have some big news we wish to share, there are a lot of changes happening right now and we believe as a company we like to be as transparent as we can to our buyers.

The first thing is, we are releasing a new update of Otem's Defiance to include two new languages, Catalan and Russian, along with some performance improvements.

We are also publishing a new DLC which includes our original soundtrack, plus some couple of covers made by collaboating artists.

Lastly, we are lowering the price of our game to 6.99$, this decision was based on the input we have received from all of our testers, users and followers on social media and places alike, We have been told constantly that they believe this to be a price range suitable for our kind of game.

We have dedicated a lot of time and effort, about a year and a half with almost zero budget or investment whatsoever, working late night shifts and doing other sacrifices we knew came with the title of being indie game developers to craft Otem's Defiance. Our original price was the price we believed to be worth the amount of work we put into this project. However, we also want more gamers to experience and enjoy Otem's Defiance, and since we believe our customers to be our main investors and supporters, we decided to trust their input by making our game more affordable.

We haven't forgotten about our first buyers, those who believed in us since the very beginning, we think is only fair to show our gratitude to them for purchasing our product at release price, so please, do contact us ( either add hyperberrygames as a friend to chat on steam or send us an email with your username to so we can verify your purchase and send you a key to download for free the full original soundtrack of Otem's Defiance, along with other goodies we will reveal once we get in touch.

On behalf of the entire HyperBerry Games team, we wish to thank everyone for the support and hope we can keep updating and expanding our game we hope you enjoy Otem's Defiance as much as we have enjoyed developing it!

  • Integrated music and SFX volume control to the settings panel
  • Added new camera mode in-game to have a wider view of the level ( toggle it by pressing Y on the controller or C on your keyboard )
  • Allowing player to look up
  • Improved support for more screen resolutions ( even as small as 800x600 )
Bugs Fixed
  • Issue with colliders on certain levels where you would get stuck inside two walls.

“There are genres that are timeless and will never cease to exist as long as there are good titles that belong to them: platformer, buller hell and action are a few of them. Otem's Defiance is a game that takes advantage of all of these genres, and it's so fast and entertaining you can't stop playing it.”

About This Game

Otem’s Defiance is a fast-paced dodge-and-shoot bullet hell indie game.

You play as Otem, a young child who has been chosen as a sacrifice to the gods of his tribe, known as the Ringods. As they materialize in the center of the ring-shaped arena, you must dodge their different attacks, avoid obstacles, traps, collect power-ups and shoot energy orbs in order to defeat them and survive the ritual lead by the tribe’s Shaman, who seems to have a personal interest in your death.

A game with simple yet addictive mechanics that are quick to grasp but hard to master. Incrementally difficult levels will leave you with an immense sense of satisfaction when you beat them and unlock new abilities that will aid you in your quest.

Fast and responsive running, dodging, jumping and shooting controls that demand plenty of quick reflexes.

Over 16 Ringods with 3 levels of difficulty each, all with different attack patterns and debuffs.

Five different locations on the Aterra continent to play in, spawning more than 36 unique Rings.

An eclectic, epic, blood pumping and beautiful soundtrack mixing different genres.

Ramping difficulty curve which goes from very easy to insanely challenging.

Epic boss fights against the evil Shaman.

Rating system for each level performance.

Over 30 Steam Achievements integrated.

A touching story about defying authority told in an animated comic unlocked as you progress.

Otem’s Defiance has delivered upon me seething rage. Proper bubbling bile, frothing in the pit of my gut that demands I throw the pad as hard as I can into my monitor in a petulant temper tantrum. The stories I could tell, the deaths I could recount, the fury I could bottle – and all of it particularly difficult to pin on the game. That makes it my fault. This makes me angrier still.

Otem is largely a twitch-based game that traps you in a number of circular arenas and then casually tries to kill you. It often succeeds. Your job, as a tribal sacrifice not all that keen on the sacrificial aspect of your career, is to run around the arena’s various floors collecting power spheres to then fire at the weak spots on a revolving totem that dominates the centre. Only, it’s not best pleased at your attempts to do so. You’re a blood tribute, and your only role is to die.

Starting out I didn't think this kind of game could have much depth, but the amount of satisfaction I got out of completing one level after another, getting better while doing so, was far greater then expected.

The art-style feels great, the totems feel balanced, the speed at which you unlock new mechanics (like power-ups, double-jumps, etc) is nicely paced.
If you're a fan of being mad at yourself for dying constantly, knowing it's your own fault, then give this a go.

Once I started playing this game, I barely played anything else for the week and a half it took me to finish it.

It's fun, challenging, colorful, charismatic and addictive. Got me cursing and retrying the same level tons of times, but also thrilled when I managed to dodge a volley of bullets at just 1 HP, double jump and hit that damn Ringod in its bullseye-thingy.

Extra props for the great OST, the charming visuals and the cool comic-like cutscenes.

This is a really fun game, with a nice story and really good artstyle. It gets really challenging after the 4th stage. The gameplay is really solid as well, I'm surprised this is an indie game. To put it in one simple word... Amazing.

Ok, I'm a story-driven type of gamer, but my gf really like platforms and fast-paced-games, and since I was selected to be beta tester I took the opportunity and told her to try Otem's Defiance with me... And I actually got involved with the story background of the game, quite a lot more than expected (nostalgia bonus, the intro actually took me to OoT, and that's a major thing to be compared to). I've put a few hours into the game just to find out what happen with Otem and the village and the EFFING gods. Le gf and I play it, and we almost kill each other about each kill, each mistake XD 10/10 perfect couple therapy.

And actually got in contact with the developers, fast to respond and faster to fix and update the game. Really cool people behind this tittle. Not at all what I was expecting, but so, so much more.

Otem's Defiance follows the formula of a good platformer: tight controls, lots of things happening at the same time, and the harrowing feeling that one of the things that happen will kill you eventually. This is all condensed in one circular set, where enemies throw you things and you throw things back.

The game starts easy but the variety of enemies quickly adds up and you start wondering how the heck are you going to evade the fireballs that are firing somewhere else. The final boss of the first tier gave me a lot of work, and it looks a lot like old school bosses and their exact patterns of movement.

This is also a game I see with a potential community of speedrunners.

I'm surprised, in a very good way. It's a hardcore old-school inspired arcade style game. The art and music are absolutely stunning and it's extremely hard. Not frustrating hard but "One last try!"-hard, and man, it's so much FUN. The story is pretty engaging as well, some very interesting inflexions and symbolism on society and human behavior. Can't believe this came from such a small team of developers.

Definitely give it a chance, I give it a glowing 5 stars, see if you can beat the first boss.

TLDR: There is potential here, but this feels a little rushed.

Otems is an interesting concept: Take a classic boss fight style (Whispy Woods comes to mind) and try to make a full game out of it. It plays well and the idea of battling gods can be appealing. Also, the music and the story strips are of excelent quality. The game, however, gets repettitive pretty quickly. Mechanics take a long time to appear (like the double jump) and fighting the same battles over and over with no new skills, gets annoying very fast. It feels a little rushed and it makes it hard for you to keep interested in the game. The animation quality is also not to par with the incredible cutscenes, and the story feels like it overstay its welcome by being too long. All in all i think this is a pretty impresive first attempt by a small indie studio, and that deserves praise. Moreover, i strongly believe that, with some polish, this could be an awesome product.
