What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“This is our first project as a studio, and while that statement might bring some cause for concern, JetCatGames is committed to developing Heliborne alongside our community. With an open and transparent philosophy on design and communication, we believe Early Access is the best platform to achieve our goals on.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are anticipating that Heliborne will be in Early Access phase for at least a year. As the project progresses and we receive feedback from our community, we may re-evaluate the project staying in, or releasing from Early Access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to offer the following,

  • 60 Helicopters up from the Current Roster of 30
  • Additional maps
  • Additional game-modes such as "Frontlines" mode in which one team is the attacker while the other is the defender.
  • The transition from Unity 4 to Unity 5 and with it better performance and graphical fidelity.
  • A progression and tech-tree system
  • A squadron building system
  • Helicopter customization
  • Additional deployable troops, such as Mortar Teams
  • Additional Flight Model Updates and a possible "realistic" flight model mode.
And more!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Heliborne currently gives players access to 34 helicopters, 4 maps, and one flagship game mode. This adversarial game mode also gives players a chance to see the first stages of the "Dynamic Battlefield" system. This system allows players to interact with and support ground units in the field that are pivotal to gameplay.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We do plan to change the price upon release from Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to involve our community in every step of the development process. This includes all of our social media, interaction with media personalities, our forums, trello board, and more. We intend to share as much with our community as possible to facilitate open lines of communication and to give as many options to feedback as possible.”

Operation Artful Eye

Greetings Pilots!

I'd like to take some time today to talk about our next contest event entitled, "Operation Artful Eye." What is Operation Artful Eye you ask? The title should just about say it all, but this operation is about finding that battlefield phtographer in all of us. Let's get to the details shall we?

Name: Operation Artful Eye
When: From 1300EDT 08OCT2016 to 1200EDT 15OCT2016

During this event we are asking you to take the best screenshots you can! Mind you, we'd like to see the best artistic screenshots possible and that means using the F9 key on your keyboard, in-game, to turn the UI off entirely. We will only be allowing one screenshot entry per person, and multiple entries will not be counted. Spaming entries will also disqualify you out right. During our live stream on the 15th we will announce the winners. This will be a slightly larger contest than before as we'll be picking a total of Five winners from the pool of screenshots.

The Prizes will be the following,
1 Teeshirt of your size and helicopter nation choice

1 Key to Heliborne to give away as you choose
1 glossed small print of our upcoming steam trading card artwork by our lead artist and Several stickers for giggles as well, :)

Also, we'll be taking your questions during this event for an interview with Raman Ulasau, the Creative Directior for Heliborne and JetCat Games. He'll be on stream next week to help me showcase the upcoming hangar UI changes as well as to answer your questions. As a note, please include your question with your email containing your screenshot, and just because you don't win doesn't mean we wont include your question in the QA on the 15th.

Finally, please send all entries to this email: artfuleye@jetcatgames.com

Thanks pilots and fly safe!

About This Game

Heliborne seeks to introduce players to rotary-wing aviation and combat. Players will have the ability to fly a number of helicopters from the 60's forward in to the year 2000 across a wide range of maps and in a wide range of mission scenarios. Players will be able to take part in a dynamic battlefield where they support the movement of ground forces that fortify positions and create supply-lines.

Heliborne offers a new type of "Zone" Capture as one of it's core game-play concepts. Troops carried by certain helicopters must be landed at, and deployed to a landing zone. These troops fortify the zone, and in some game modes, defend a base until ground re-enforcements arrive.

Current Features

  • Updated simul-lite/arcade hybrid flight model that models over 70 different aspects of flight per helicopter.
Our Flight model melds the best of both worlds, and while being updated regularly, is in a state that we are very happy with. This includes momentum and inertia dynamics. This system will be expanded on with more realistic flight dynamics as the project grows.

  • 34 Helicopters, Each with multiple weapons load-outs
The load-outs for each of our helicopters is based entirely on weapons systems that they would have, or did employ in active combat theaters and operations. You wont see a weapons loadout on our helicopters that is not historically accurate.

  • 4 Major Mission Maps - Including Operation Nguyen Hue, Afghanistan, the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam, and Kosovo
All of our maps are "based" on historical conflicts and conflict locations.

  • 2 Principle Game modes - Including standard skirmish, and Frontline mode that's currently exclusive to Operation Nguyen Hue
Skirmish mode is currently active on Afghanistan and Gulf of Tonkin and offers standard capture the flag gameplay. Operation Nguyen Hue offers the first glimpse at "Frontline" mode. As bases are captured by players, ground vehicles spawn in convoys and move across the map to fortify bases and positions.

  • Multiple AI controlled ground units in skirmish and Front-line mode
Tanks, Troop Carriers, and Anti-Aircraft Artillery vehicles make up the current roster of ground vehicles in Heliborne, more are planned.

  • Airborne Troops that can be deployed anywhere on the map MANPADS or "Man-Portable Air Defense system" are just some of the "deploy-able" ground units that players can place anywhere, on any map. Not all helicopters carry these soldiers. Those that can, add a new level to the dynamic battlefield.

  • Three Classes of Helicopter from Attack, to Air-Assault, and Reconnaissance
Scout Helicopters are small, fast, and may or may not carry a small amount of soldiers. Attack Helicopters carry no troops and are dedicated to air-to-air or air-to-ground operations. Air-Assault helicopters typically carry a mix of troops and weapons and can fill multiple roles in combat.

  • Three Historical Tiers of Rotary Wing Aviation from 1950 to 2000
Helicopters are widely considered to have "Come of Age" during the Vietnam conflict, and over the following decades, helicopters have become integral to our very way of life. We seek to showcase Rotary wing aviation as it's evolved over four decades of conflict, support, and development.

Excellent game so far; I'm looking forward to the future of this title!

Most people are complaining about low server pop, but this game is still in it's Alpha Phase 1. Give it a few months and you'll see the population increase as they move into Phase 3's promotion boosts.

Great game design and the graphics are worth the price of playing. The game play is very smooth and the player base might be small atm but the game is still in early stages. The game is very well balanced and its not just a shooter flying game there is strategy planning envolved. For 10bucks its worth the purchase.

So, my last review seemed not to post and I'm not going to rewrite it. I'll give you the cliffnotes.

First off, this game is not a flight simulator. If you are expecting a flight simulator you will be disappointed.

The Good:

Intuitive gameplay with a manageable learning curve

Smooth gameplay with mouse and keyboard with gamepad support planned in the future

Engaging team-based play that requires your head to be on a swivel for enemies on the ground, enemies on the air and teammates in need of support

Significant amount of aircraft available with varients of each

Combat is tense without being prohibitively difficult, allowing new players to be successful as they learn the ropes while providing room to grow for more advanced players

Very active devs

The Meh:

Would like to see more customization in both game creation and aircraft customization, maybe something more akin to what Insurgency has going rather than preset loadouts

Would love to see additional game modes

Only two countries available for aircraft selection

Only four maps availabe

No door gunners

Would like to see cockpit view improved

The Bad:

Map currently determines generation of aircraft; would like to see multi-generational maps.

Currently no game lobby, game begins upon creation

Currently no game creation options beyond map selection

In-game VOIP not support, which I think would help to grow the player base if included

The player base is small, rarely seeing more than a dozen players on at a time

The Ugly:

Hit detection can be off, with lag seemingly the primary culprit

Crosshairs need work; while they are manual and accurate for engaging ground forces, aerial combat seems to half a sort of half-hearted aim assist that can be wonky, would rather see fully manual reticle

Gameplay 8/10

Customization 6/10

Active devs 10/10

Optimization 8/10

Overall 7.75/10

For the price, you're not going to lose with this game. It has a lot to offer as a standalone multiplayer and is constantly improving. I have seen much worse at the $15 and $20 price point.

At first, I was skeptical about this game. But I purchased anyhow. Then the controls were wonky and the loading was a little slow. I got crashed frequently, I was instantly killed by enemies easily. My keystroke for 'W' was moving the heli backward instead of forward. I rage quit, I got frustrated and then just clicked on steam refund for this game and wrote a negative review. But I still didnt want to give up. I loaded up the game again and somehow managed to move past my base after a lot of trial and error. I am not sure how I went pass the weird control issues that I was having and from time to time it would resurface. But this time, I was not afraid. I was willing to grind. 20 Minutes into the game , I was flying really well. Along the way, through group chat, I learnt the meaning of a few statistics that showed up, frag, capture and something else. Soon I became immersed in the game. It was already an hour and time flew. I still didnt register a single kill and I died already 20 times. But it didnt bother, because I was already having the best time playing any game in my life. It was freaking awesome. This game is a beast when it comes to fun. Just buy it. 10 $ is nothing for this game. It is way underpriced for its potential. And I almost forgot to mention. I cancelled my steam refund and deleted my negative review, once my wife woke me up from my trance playtime.

I'm writing this as a game designer/art director, as it is my profession.

If you're reading this as you're buying the game, be prepared to face a lot of bugs, and broken features..
BUT, if/when you end up buying it, I hope you give some feedback to the creators of this amazing/potential game, as they really need the information by the firsthand experience, you, the players!

For the developers:
First of all, I understand that Heliborne is in Early Access, but damn, this game has A LOT of potential.
I'm really hoping that you guys are keen and ready to develop and upgrade the game further, since this is the most critical time to do it. And remember (as you might already know), probably the most important thing for games like this;
listen to your audience, and prepare to make great changes to your game by their wishes, and you will have the next World of Tanks in your hands!

If you need any help with the process, feel free to contact me.
Best of luck!

My initial thumbs up stands. This game, and everything it stands for, still has potential. Actually, it has a HELI-load of potential [pun-intended]! I'm now adding a few more items I've noticed that may need work, that's it!)

I HIGHLY recommend this game. As an early access game, it's really fleshed out, better than most. There's some pros and cons however that I'd like to mention, and I've updated them since my last review.

Great Physics
Great Concept
Somewhat active community
Excellent replayability *new*
Good classes to choose from *new*
Nice loadouts *new*
Very fleshed out weapons firing systems *new*
Developers are active in the game! *new*

Team balance doesn't work (i.e. can have a 1 v 9 match and that's hilarious, let me tell you)
Hit mechanics are questionable
In Multiplayer matches, a timer would be nice, as matches can go on FOREVER *new*
There's a glitch where if you die on a helipad, and spawn again, you'll keep dying over and over. It's hilarious *new*
Teamkilling is not penalized *new*

That's about it. I noticed when I quit the first time my internet was unusable for a bit. Don't know if this was the game itself, or not. Anyway, the game itself is pretty well fleshed out in this early stage.

Basically, you fly a helicopter and it has roles. Some helicopters carry Anti-Air Personnel you can drop anywhere by landing and pressing the "E" key, and in those heli's you usually have a troop compliment that can only be released when on or near control points. Overall, it's pretty fun.

I picked this up from a Twitch stream that the devs were doing. They were giving away some keys, lucky me :) I have played when I had the time and just got bored of my usual daily games. I really do enjoy this game. The air fire fights are some of the best.

I am running the EVGA 1070 which is overkill for this game. I find the graphics to be really nice for sure. The draw distance settings work really nice. The sounds are good, I love the big guns on the Helis they give a nice bass when they hit. As far as the maps I wish there where a few more choices but it's in early access so I am sure that will improve as time goes on.

Ok, here is the main one for me!
The controls are not hard at all to get used to..Took me maybe 5 minutes and I was up and running like a pro, well I mean I knew the controls. Not that I wasn't killed very 30 seconds lol...

I think for an early access game this is well on it's way to being a very nice and enjoyable game if you like stuff like this. Well even if you are not into it you might want to give it a try. The price is not all that high compared to a lot of early access games...And hey you can always get a refund if you meet the requirements...

I give it a total thumbs up for those looking to leave their normal type of games they play or like this kind of thing!

Note: This is online play. Once in a while there might not be a lot of players but when there is it's great fun. I have not found one peron online that was rude when I chatted with them! This is only my exp of course!

Keep up the great work JetCatGames.

the following review should be seen as a review of a very new game. it is still a work in progress, thus you should not judge this comment as if it were a finalized game...

  • very fun, competitive game
  • the helicopters look very nice
  • ofcourse the dynamics should be tweaked a bit more, but in general pretty good (when comparing all helicopters)
  • maps are very nicely detailed
  • mods play along, and get killed easily soo you can brag that you are better than them lol

  • there's just 4 maps (and hopefully more will be added)
  • there's only a capture the flag game mode, which don't get me wrong, can get very competitive. but the game needs different modes like "air battle" or single player, or coop
  • the graphics engine needs to be tweaked. A LOT. it requires too much resources, which could make the gaming experience a bit less fun over time.
  • there is no auto balance. even if the game will not let you join a "too strong" team when joining. it doesn't auto balance the teams during the game. you could get left 5v1 when all your team mates leave. thus, this can be a pain in the ..... over time.
  • being a new game, there aren't thousands of servers/matches online, and sometimes there isn't a match going on at all unless you start it. (but, the community is growing, and the mods are doing their best for it to grow, like handing out free game keys. so this might be someting for the pros list)

the game is a solid 7/10 with a potential of turning into a 10/10 very soon, due to the effort of the devs and moderators. this game, as a helicopter battle sim, is worth the purchase.
