What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“This is our first project as a studio, and while that statement might bring some cause for concern, JetCatGames is committed to developing Heliborne alongside our community. With an open and transparent philosophy on design and communication, we believe Early Access is the best platform to achieve our goals on.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are anticipating that Heliborne will be in Early Access phase for at least a year. As the project progresses and we receive feedback from our community, we may re-evaluate the project staying in, or releasing from Early Access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to offer the following,

  • 60 Helicopters up from the Current Roster of 30
  • Additional maps
  • Additional game-modes such as "Frontlines" mode in which one team is the attacker while the other is the defender.
  • The transition from Unity 4 to Unity 5 and with it better performance and graphical fidelity.
  • A progression and tech-tree system
  • A squadron building system
  • Helicopter customization
  • Additional deployable troops, such as Mortar Teams
  • Additional Flight Model Updates and a possible "realistic" flight model mode.
And more!”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Heliborne currently gives players access to 34 helicopters, 4 maps, and one flagship game mode. This adversarial game mode also gives players a chance to see the first stages of the "Dynamic Battlefield" system. This system allows players to interact with and support ground units in the field that are pivotal to gameplay.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We do plan to change the price upon release from Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to involve our community in every step of the development process. This includes all of our social media, interaction with media personalities, our forums, trello board, and more. We intend to share as much with our community as possible to facilitate open lines of communication and to give as many options to feedback as possible.”

Update 0.40 is live!

Greetings Pilots! another update for you today. We hope you enjoy it!

  • Main lobby (before battle) UI changed, should be easier to join and create battles especially for new players. Keep in mind that this lobby is work-in-progress both stylistically and UX-wise, we will improve and change it over the coming updates.
  • New helicopter: Mi-8AMTSH

    Mi-8AMTSH Information
    http://www.military-today.com/helicopters/mi8_amtsh.htm
"The Mi-8AMTSh is a dedicated armored assault version of the Mi-8AMT helicopter. It is sometimes given the nickname "Terminator." Its armament is derived from the Mi-24 gunship and it carries some additional armor. It made its first flight in 1996. This helicopter was first publicly demonstrated in 1999."

Here's a small Video of the real world version of this helicopter in flight,
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=7&v=m_o6Vs6ZJX0

  • New type of soldier - soldier equipped with RPG/SMAW (Shoots at ground targets and slowly flying helicopters)
  • Added ability to ping landing zones on the minimap - hold CTRL and click with your mouse on landing zone icon on minimap to do it. This mechanic will be extended in upcoming updates, its first step in implementing several teamplay-related mechanics
  • Speed of several helicopters altered (mainly 1 and 2 generations: Mi-4AV, Ka-18, Mi-1MU, UH-1B, UH-1D, H-34, etc)
  • Several improvements to combat UI: when landed on base it shows you which button to press to change helicopter, shows rearming progress for ammo and soldiers, and more.

As a note, stay tuned for the OH-58D coming SoonTM!

About This Game

Heliborne seeks to introduce players to rotary-wing aviation and combat. Players will have the ability to fly a number of helicopters from the 60's forward in to the year 2000 across a wide range of maps and in a wide range of mission scenarios. Players will be able to take part in a dynamic battlefield where they support the movement of ground forces that fortify positions and create supply-lines.

Heliborne offers a new type of "Zone" Capture as one of it's core game-play concepts. Troops carried by certain helicopters must be landed at, and deployed to a landing zone. These troops fortify the zone, and in some game modes, defend a base until ground re-enforcements arrive.

Current Features

  • Updated simul-lite/arcade hybrid flight model that models over 70 different aspects of flight per helicopter.
Our Flight model melds the best of both worlds, and while being updated regularly, is in a state that we are very happy with. This includes momentum and inertia dynamics. This system will be expanded on with more realistic flight dynamics as the project grows.

  • 34 Helicopters, Each with multiple weapons load-outs
The load-outs for each of our helicopters is based entirely on weapons systems that they would have, or did employ in active combat theaters and operations. You wont see a weapons loadout on our helicopters that is not historically accurate.

  • 4 Major Mission Maps - Including Operation Nguyen Hue, Afghanistan, the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam, and Kosovo
All of our maps are "based" on historical conflicts and conflict locations.

  • 2 Principle Game modes - Including standard skirmish, and Frontline mode that's currently exclusive to Operation Nguyen Hue
Skirmish mode is currently active on Afghanistan and Gulf of Tonkin and offers standard capture the flag gameplay. Operation Nguyen Hue offers the first glimpse at "Frontline" mode. As bases are captured by players, ground vehicles spawn in convoys and move across the map to fortify bases and positions.

  • Multiple AI controlled ground units in skirmish and Front-line mode
Tanks, Troop Carriers, and Anti-Aircraft Artillery vehicles make up the current roster of ground vehicles in Heliborne, more are planned.

  • Airborne Troops that can be deployed anywhere on the map MANPADS or "Man-Portable Air Defense system" are just some of the "deploy-able" ground units that players can place anywhere, on any map. Not all helicopters carry these soldiers. Those that can, add a new level to the dynamic battlefield.

  • Three Classes of Helicopter from Attack, to Air-Assault, and Reconnaissance
Scout Helicopters are small, fast, and may or may not carry a small amount of soldiers. Attack Helicopters carry no troops and are dedicated to air-to-air or air-to-ground operations. Air-Assault helicopters typically carry a mix of troops and weapons and can fill multiple roles in combat.

  • Three Historical Tiers of Rotary Wing Aviation from 1950 to 2000
Helicopters are widely considered to have "Come of Age" during the Vietnam conflict, and over the following decades, helicopters have become integral to our very way of life. We seek to showcase Rotary wing aviation as it's evolved over four decades of conflict, support, and development.

this is a great game, not a sim but if you like helicopters and the ability in a game to be able to play how you want, i cant say enough good things about this game. it can be played in a ground attack, dog fighting and ground support roles. the only problem at the moment is the ability to stack teams but the community in general is able to address this by simply changing teams themselves. easy and fun

Very enjoyable game and playable after only a little practice, physics work well and the helicopter models look good

It would be even better if it had an unlock system and a better matchmaking system which filled the teams as at the moment you never get a full game.

Over all a very enjoyable game and worth the money you pay

Heliborn is an early access online only helicopter objective based multiplayer game created by JetCat Studios (that’s a long description), This is the first game from JetCat Games as a studio according to the early access section on the steam store page. And as a small team of 5 and with a small budget, it’s not a bad first game. But it’s not perfect. Heliborn suffers from small

performance problems and a serious case of “Simplicity”
Heliborn comes with a very decent amount of helicopters, 34 to be exact. You have your troop transportation choppers, tank choppers, small but speedy choppers, damage dealing helicopters, you name it, it’s got it. But that means nothing if they handle like trying to put in a USB stick in the dark bent over on your computer with your pants falling off. Trust me, it’s not pretty. But I’m happy to report that while not realistic, helicopters fly easily and are fun to control, every helicopter feels unique, some are faster than others, some slow down quicker, some turn faster. The only problem I can complain about is how it’s hard to gain speed from a standstill, no matter if you’re in the air or on the ground, not good when you need to move in a pinch. Helicopters are also dependent on the team you’re playing on, so if you’re defending the almighty USA, you’ll have different helicopters compared to the Russian team, but from my experience the USA team has slightly better helicopters.

The land that you fly your helicopters in are, at best, mediocre. The size of the maps is okay at best and there are only 4 maps, but for $9.99USD, that’s to be expected. The 2 of the 4 maps are set in Vietnam, The Gulf of Tokin which is a watered base map which is my personal favorite, Operation Nguyen Hue (also in Vietnam) is my least favorite and I wish they would get rid of it entirely, Badakhshan Province is a map based in Afghanistan and I found it fun to fly around, and Kosovo (which doesn’t state where it’s from) which has little cities that you can and should destroy, it gives you no advantage to the game, but who doesn’t like destroying cities? It takes roughly 20 – 30 seconds to get to the nearest objective, depending on the map and to get from one side to the other takes around 60 seconds, which is good for keeping the action close together, I never felt like I wasn’t being harassed by another player or AI bases shooting me down, I was always under pressure which kept it fun.

While the maps are decent, the way they look do not. You’ll find mediocre textures and bump mapping, hills look bland, trees look the same and somehow on a GTX 960 and i7 4770 with 16GB worth of ram, I got performance dips into the 20 fps range at some points, but most of the time it was at 60. The pro is that the effect of shooting rockets and bullets into the water is strangely satisfying. Moving on to how the game actually plays, I noticed that I couldn’t find anyone to play with, I played on the 15/05/2016 (Aussie Dates, DD/MM/YYYY) at a peak time and I couldn’t find anyone, I had to jump to an American server where I found 3 people to play with, and I actually had a good time! Fleeing from other players as rockets and bullets only just miss me, doing bombing runs on enemy AI bases, dropping off my troops to capture an outpost, it’s fantastic. To capture an outpost, you must land on a helipad and drop off troops (if you helicopter supports it that is) and hope not to be bombed. The troops will get in tanks, and the anti-aircraft missiles if the outpost has them and sometimes boats!, you must destroy them before you can take over the outpost, I actually really like this idea and I hope more games like this implement them. The biggest problem to Heliborn is the length of the game and the UI. There is no time limit on the game so you can play forever, and since a game can actually never end, I had to force quit the only game on the servers because it went for over an hour and still wasn’t finished with no signs of it ending any time soon, I’m confident that at the time of writing this that it’s still going on right now or everyone just quit out by now. During that time, I had fun for the first 30 minutes before it got boring, very quickly. Go to an objective, shoot the AI, drop your troops, shoot an enemy helicopter, go back to… wait, I forgot to mention a very big problem. Even if I could CLEARLY SEE my bullets / rockets hitting the helicopter, I didn’t get a hit marker and didn’t deal damage, and according to the server I had missed. This happened over 90% of the time and added to why I quit the game before it could even finish.

The sound design in Heliborn is poor, the quality of the sounds is fine, but the lack there of is what makes it a disappointment, I can hear the same sound of the chopper blades rotating every 10 seconds, I can tell when a certain pitch is playing and I can mimic it which drives me crazy. The sound of when your chopper crashes into the ground is pathetic and is very dull. The only good sound in the game is the rockets and mini guns, which are mediocre at best.
Heliborn has some potential for being a great game, but the lack of a reason to keep coming back to the game other than the experience of shooting and winning, which has flaws, makes Heliborn a slight disappointment, I can’t deny that I did enjoy the game at first, but thanks to dicky hit reg, mediocre graphics, the lack of people playing on the servers and sound and the lack of a progression system, I can’t recommend Heli born, even for $10. But if you can find it for $5- 7 or less, definitely pick up Heliborn, but just remember, there is a chance that you will be playing alone.

SCORE: 5.4/10 (54)
PROS:
• Fun map design
• Good helicopter handling
• LOTS of helicopters
CONS:
• Poor sound design
• Lack of playerbase / no player vs AI only
• Graphics are mediocre at best.

Warthunder for helicopters...

+1 Helicopters

+Lots of them, some I've never heard of before, an interesting learning experience.

+Controls are simple and the physics are satisfying.

+only 600MB give or take to download

+Cheap cheap cheap

-Graphics are 2008 era, not a big deal

-You can get shot down very quickly, and often...

-Nobody plays

Might want to consider supporting these devs. This could be a cool game. 7/10
