What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Halloween Forever is complete as I originally envisioned it and released it on, but based on some user feedback since release I would like to make a few menu and ux improvements. Adding a few more levels and extra content would be excellent to really make the Steam release feel valuable.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“If everything works out I'll aim to have Halloween Forever fully realized by second quarter 2016.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will ideally feature these additions. I may need to tweak this list based on how things go, but optimally:

- Some menu polish and refinement. Sound and music toggles.
- An additional world or two plus bosses.
- Some new secrets, but trying to not largely change existing world designs. I’m not sure if I will spread the current secrets out through all the worlds or keep them all in place for worlds 1-3.
- Additional music, ideally a custom level theme per world.
- Some support for control remapping and more universal gamepad support.
- Switching to 16:9 instead of 4:3, or even view size toggles.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“As mentioned before, Halloween Forever is "done" but could bear from some improvements. The overall tone of the game will remain the same and will feature more content and better quality of life user features.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I'm not planning on changing the price after Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I'm going to be streaming progress at and I invite anyone who is interested to hang out and chat about the process. I'm hoping by letting the Community play the game as I go I can include the best feedback into my builds. There may be a balance between integrating new ideas and keeping scope in check (and avoiding excessive refactoring), but I'm looking forward to engaging in that dialogue.

In adding new levels, extending existing content and adding things like new secrets I'm hoping the Community can give feedback on quality of level design and general fun and appeal of the game. If people have quality suggestions on how I may improve things I would love to hear them.

If the Community is able to find bugs and share them with me that would be invaluable too.

Additionally, if I do port to Linux I'm going to be looking for some testing assistance if anyone in the Community is willing to help.”

Halloween Forever v. 1.03 now live

Ok, where to begin? It's been nearly half a year since I updated the build but I've been working steadily on things since. Straight from my basement to your home, here comes version 1.03. My forum post notes from yesterday slightly preempted this update, so I'm going to borrow from that a little bit.

What's new in 1.03?
- Player knockback. Taking damage triggers a knockback state.
- Player firing has some limits depending on the character. You may notice it more if you're standing on a ledge firing bullets into a pit (bullets are on screen longer).
- Each world has a miniboss and world boss now. I left the original world bosses as world bosses and new minibosses are intermediate within worlds.
- Some old bosses may have gotten a health boost.
- Screenshake effects added in some instances for when impactful things happen.
- Worlds are longer, more rooms to them. These may get longer still.
- There are now ladders and jump through / drop through platforms. Adds some much valued variety!
- Added some checkpoints. If there are too many I may remove some. I've felt like dying and needing to retry a world from the start is kind of arbitrary difficulty for a while.
- Transitioning between rooms has a visual effect and looks less abrupt/choppy.
- New music for Bloody Mansion and Mystic Ruins (I keep calling it Forgotten Stonehenge accidentally)!
- Unlockable characters! There are three hidden in the game so far (look for hidden or not hidden pink doors). You need to find them and win your run to successfully unlock, but then the unlock should stay persistently. Unless you reset your unlocks (you can if you wish...) Unlocks save separately from your configs.
- Control config saving may have never worked properly, but I think I fixed it this week.
- Separate music and sound effect mute toggles. Should save with config.
- 1 hp mode toggle if you want to be wild and go for a no hit run...
- I might be missing something else still. It's been a loooong time, gradually adding updates. If I remember anything critical to mention I'll append some stuff to this.

Some things that are missing still / need improvement:
- Some tile placement around levels can be a little patchy. Still needing to fill in walls and things so everything looks solid.
- I need to do a big sound effects pass throughout. Some things may be temporarily quiet and lacking some flavor.
- Still no achievements or trading cards. Looking at that soon. Achievements will probably get implemented last so they can be built around the fullest frame of content in the final build.
- New characters yes, but the endings are all Pumpkin Man endings. This should change.
- I haven't extensively tested the secondary characters attacks. They're fun and all generally more powerful or interesting than Pumpkin Man's candy corn shot. I'm intending them to be fun NG+ options to play around with, plus the character skins add some fun variety. BUT, if anything seems grossly unbalanced or terrible let me know. Open to revisions.
- The controls text on the title screen doesn't reflect changes to your keyboard configs. I'm probably going to remove this.
- No gamepad config as of yet. It's not awesome, but the keyboard config setup plus JoyToKey might be a robust option for people without an xbox form factor gamepad.
- Finish up world 4, finish up world 5.

With all the updates in 1.03 this represents roughly half of what I have planned for the final game (maybe a little bit more). I have some world 4 and 5 content already in the works and maybe we can wrap things up before Halloween 2016. I'm sprinting, having fun doing it and hope you enjoy what's getting put into the game!

Please let me know what you think! ESPECIALLY if you are totally new to Halloween Forever and haven't explored these levels or fought these bosses. I'm very interested to know how much time it takes you to clear the game (rough cumulative gameplay time, vs. how much time your winning run took). It helps me gauge the time-in players are going to get out of this experience. Since the big negative from early feedback was the game was too short for players I really want to address that.

Any bugs or issues you can find too, let me know!

"Early Access Review"

Whether or not the game's asking price of $3 is worth it for possibly up to 30 minutes of gameplay time is up to you, I did get enjoyment out of the 14 minutes I played which involved playing through the game once and then again to collect runes to get the secret ending.

The game plays like a typical platformer game and has just 3 levels currently, each with a boss and several sub areas in each. The same music track in each level can get a bit grating.

A cute little 8bit game themed around Halloween. I don't think there are too many games that are actually based around the holiday of Halloween. It's a standard platformer that gives you plenty of health so it's a little on the easy side. The pixel art is great! It gets me in the Halloween spirit with all the different horror themed stages and monsters. It's pretty short, but for $2.99 it's well worth the price tag. Plus, the developer intends to add another level or two.

Get this game if you want:
-A simple, short, and easy platformer with good pixel art and a quaint Halloween theme.

Don't get it if you're looking for:
-A really difficult and/or long platformer or a game more oriented around actual "scary atmosphere" rather than just a simple Halloween theme.

Halloween Forever is an 8-bit style platformer with a big emphasis on a Halloween theme - and it does a solid job with its presentation.

Granted, the game is a bit too short right now (only 3 levels), but it has decent mechanics, a really good artstyle, alright music and lots of potential.
And knowing the developer wants to extend the game with more content makes me confident it will eventually become a really good experience instead of just a good one.

Very fun game, it gives that nostalgic feeling from back in the day! I liked this retro 8 bit adventure and I think it's worth playing especially if your a fan of 2d platformers! I also made a letsplay on this as I was interested in this game just by looking at the screen shots and maaan, I was not dissapointed, the only thing I found weird was W being the jump button and thats because I prefere it to be the space bar.. but other than that its a really good game and I had fun playing it, great job! :)

Had a blast playing through this game! It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it but it is really fun to play. Great music, great level design, and cool colorful graphics. The game is a bit short, but besides that this game is worth a purchase.

Very fun game, very short game, very cheap game. This game is new, but done like a retro platformer. It's really fun, and the Halloween spooky setting is awesome. If you're into old retro platformers like this, you'll most likely enjoy this, BUT my short game time is representative of the games length. My 0.7 game time is after I played through the game multiple times with a couple game overs.

Even though this is still classed as being in "Early Access" the developer has said this release is finished as he originally intended, but there will be more updates to the game, fixing things, adding new levels and extra content.

As I, and everyone, pretty much said, this game is very short. Even though I very much enjoyed my time with it, I almost lean towards not recommending it because of it's length... But if you're into this genre, for the price of £1.99 and the promise of extra content coming later, I think you'd be right to try Halloween Forever out.

EDIT: Thinking about it, £1.99 is a little much for such a short short game. Maybe wait for a sale if you don't want to spend your spare couple pounds (dollars, euros, whatever) on this :P

A cute platformer that pays homage to old NES games. The theme is endearing - I mean you play a pumpkin that spits candy corn... :)

BUY THIS GAME!! It's soo much fun, there isnt much to do ATM. There is a total of 3 stage, but the DEV is ALWAYS streaming on twitch, and is actively working on a big update. The controls are tight, and the pixel art is some of my favorite. After "speedrunning" the game for a total of 3 hours, I was able to beat it in under 3 minutes.

I think when this game gets its update, people will be buying it up. Until then, why not get your Halloween on, and be early to the party???

A nice, simple and fun game that plays like an oldschool platformer should. The only drawback I could see while playing was a lack of variety when it comes to the level design (the Halloween theme/setting is perfect though), everything else was solid. I wish more people would focus on making games like this and I hope to see more from ImaginaryMonsters.

Short, but absolutely worth it! It took me 58 minutes to finish the game, to go back and find all the runes and finish it once more. The art is cute, and the enemies look cool, the music is nice. I already had a great time playing it and can't wait for the full game.
