What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Halloween Forever is complete as I originally envisioned it and released it on itch.io, but based on some user feedback since release I would like to make a few menu and ux improvements. Adding a few more levels and extra content would be excellent to really make the Steam release feel valuable.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“If everything works out I'll aim to have Halloween Forever fully realized by second quarter 2016.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will ideally feature these additions. I may need to tweak this list based on how things go, but optimally:

- Some menu polish and refinement. Sound and music toggles.
- An additional world or two plus bosses.
- Some new secrets, but trying to not largely change existing world designs. I’m not sure if I will spread the current secrets out through all the worlds or keep them all in place for worlds 1-3.
- Additional music, ideally a custom level theme per world.
- Some support for control remapping and more universal gamepad support.
- Switching to 16:9 instead of 4:3, or even view size toggles.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“As mentioned before, Halloween Forever is "done" but could bear from some improvements. The overall tone of the game will remain the same and will feature more content and better quality of life user features.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I'm not planning on changing the price after Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I'm going to be streaming progress at http://www.twitch.tv/imaginarymonsters and I invite anyone who is interested to hang out and chat about the process. I'm hoping by letting the Community play the game as I go I can include the best feedback into my builds. There may be a balance between integrating new ideas and keeping scope in check (and avoiding excessive refactoring), but I'm looking forward to engaging in that dialogue.

In adding new levels, extending existing content and adding things like new secrets I'm hoping the Community can give feedback on quality of level design and general fun and appeal of the game. If people have quality suggestions on how I may improve things I would love to hear them.

If the Community is able to find bugs and share them with me that would be invaluable too.

Additionally, if I do port to Linux I'm going to be looking for some testing assistance if anyone in the Community is willing to help.”

Halloween Forever v. 1.021 now live

Halloween Forever v. 1.021 build notes:
- Recompiled the game using an older more stable SDK. Trying to resolve the no-launch issue some users have been seeing. If you update and still are unable to launch the game please let me know.
- Added first pass of a Config menu available from the title screen. This features keyboard control remapping and the ability to restore defaults and save control presets for next launch (presets will be saved when you click Save and Confirm). It's still a work in progress, needing some new button sizes and positioning. Also you can enter in duplicate values and break controls for the game. Restore Defaults if you accidentally save something unusable for now. I'm working on a check to not allow duplicate entries.

Happy Friday to you all : ] I do hope the SDK fix resolves some of the launching issues people are having.

BUY THIS GAME!! It's soo much fun, there isnt much to do ATM. There is a total of 3 stage, but the DEV is ALWAYS streaming on twitch, and is actively working on a big update. The controls are tight, and the pixel art is some of my favorite. After "speedrunning" the game for a total of 3 hours, I was able to beat it in under 3 minutes.

I think when this game gets its update, people will be buying it up. Until then, why not get your Halloween on, and be early to the party???

A nice, simple and fun game that plays like an oldschool platformer should. The only drawback I could see while playing was a lack of variety when it comes to the level design (the Halloween theme/setting is perfect though), everything else was solid. I wish more people would focus on making games like this and I hope to see more from ImaginaryMonsters.

Short, but absolutely worth it! It took me 58 minutes to finish the game, to go back and find all the runes and finish it once more. The art is cute, and the enemies look cool, the music is nice. I already had a great time playing it and can't wait for the full game.

Good game, has alot of potential to be good. I find most of the game super simple apart from having to start again completely from the start. I wouldnt mind so much if there was something more to the game like finding secret areas or extra lives or continues somehow. Controls do the job but nothing that stands out really. Really like the concept the pumpkin head dude and the characters. Hopefully this stuff can be addressed. In the future before full release. and also check out a mobile game called Venture Kid it is well made and has a nice balance to the design to hold your interest. In its current state i cant really recommend this game.

"Early Access Review"

Whether or not the game's asking price of $3 is worth it for possibly up to 30 minutes of gameplay time is up to you, I did get enjoyment out of the 14 minutes I played which involved playing through the game once and then again to collect runes to get the secret ending.

The game plays like a typical platformer game and has just 3 levels currently, each with a boss and several sub areas in each. The same music track in each level can get a bit grating.

Halloween Forever is an 8-bit style platformer with a big emphasis on a Halloween theme - and it does a solid job with its presentation.

Granted, the game is a bit too short right now (only 3 levels), but it has decent mechanics, a really good artstyle, alright music and lots of potential.
And knowing the developer wants to extend the game with more content makes me confident it will eventually become a really good experience instead of just a good one.

A cute little 8bit game themed around Halloween. I don't think there are too many games that are actually based around the holiday of Halloween. It's a standard platformer that gives you plenty of health so it's a little on the easy side. The pixel art is great! It gets me in the Halloween spirit with all the different horror themed stages and monsters. It's pretty short, but for $2.99 it's well worth the price tag. Plus, the developer intends to add another level or two.

Get this game if you want:
-A simple, short, and easy platformer with good pixel art and a quaint Halloween theme.

Don't get it if you're looking for:
-A really difficult and/or long platformer or a game more oriented around actual "scary atmosphere" rather than just a simple Halloween theme.

Had a blast playing through this game! It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it but it is really fun to play. Great music, great level design, and cool colorful graphics. The game is a bit short, but besides that this game is worth a purchase.

Very fun game, it gives that nostalgic feeling from back in the day! I liked this retro 8 bit adventure and I think it's worth playing especially if your a fan of 2d platformers! I also made a letsplay on this as I was interested in this game just by looking at the screen shots and maaan, I was not dissapointed, the only thing I found weird was W being the jump button and thats because I prefere it to be the space bar.. but other than that its a really good game and I had fun playing it, great job! :)

Very fun game, very short game, very cheap game. This game is new, but done like a retro platformer. It's really fun, and the Halloween spooky setting is awesome. If you're into old retro platformers like this, you'll most likely enjoy this, BUT my short game time is representative of the games length. My 0.7 game time is after I played through the game multiple times with a couple game overs.

Even though this is still classed as being in "Early Access" the developer has said this release is finished as he originally intended, but there will be more updates to the game, fixing things, adding new levels and extra content.

As I, and everyone, pretty much said, this game is very short. Even though I very much enjoyed my time with it, I almost lean towards not recommending it because of it's length... But if you're into this genre, for the price of £1.99 and the promise of extra content coming later, I think you'd be right to try Halloween Forever out.

EDIT: Thinking about it, £1.99 is a little much for such a short short game. Maybe wait for a sale if you don't want to spend your spare couple pounds (dollars, euros, whatever) on this :P
