Cargo! - The quest for gravity is a sandbox in which you can construct different vehicles to either traverse the air, ground or underwater.

There are some vague objectives in the main mode of the game. It is technically sandbox-esk in that mode but its more constrained. The proper sandbox mode has basically no rules and no form of currency to hold back on your design process.

The aforementioned currency is that of FUN. Derived from providing pleasure to the weird little naked infant/adult hybrid humanoid creatures. Don't be lewd. The pleasure is from well.. kicking them and sort of dragging them around on the vehicles you craft by attaching life savers.

The crafting actually has two options, you can either in-act the use of blueprints that are collected by exploring the world or you can build your own from scratch. Admittedly, the latter is much more difficult. However you can scrap parts, find parts and sell them or spend a lot of time kicking those weird babies. The building from scratch isn't as robust as you might like; but as the game is only $10 and is ostensibly a budget title its really more effective than you might expect.

It's a fine little time sink. It's fun and inoffensive if not a little weird and quirky. It certainly isn't lacking in character. I wouldn't pay full price and I didn't nor did I receive it for free; but its a nice eclectic oddity at the very least.

This is the third of Ice-Pick Lodge’s games – the first being a depressing story of an epidemic outbreak in Pathologic, and the second a dark yet wonderful world of The Void. Their third game is called “Cargo! The quest for gravity” – the only game by IPL that cannot be described as gloomy, dark and hostile. Quite the opposite, actually, as Cargo! is a very colorful game.

The game begins with an intro where a crew of two flies over an island in a hot air balloon. The island is their destination, however, they do not land, but crash instead. One of the crew members – a woman – is the player’s character throughout the game. After the intro, the little naked midgets talk to the player using rhymes. The player is supposed to go around and kick the midgets for “FUN”, after which they often explode in colors. Soon afterwards, three machine God-heads speak explaining that the world is destroyed and must be rebuilt by reconnecting various flying around parts of it, which the player can do with paying with the collected FUN. Collecting FUN does is not limited to running around and kicking midgets, fortunately. Among other things, you can attack them to your vehicle and give them a ride or leave on the ground a tune for them to dance around. The main activity of the player is completing various quests he is given – from saving drowning midgets through racing against them to maneuvering a tornado. To complete them one must build different vehicles. Some quests are not obvious and I had to scratch my head coming up with ideas what developers could possibly want me to do at this particular stage of the game. One quest I even completed randomly without knowing what to do until I accidentally did it. Note, however, that it’s not because quests in Cargo! are too difficult – they are banal – but they are often too random! Sometimes the player is not provided with a clear description what he must do and what is expected of him is to perform an action that was neither encountered before nor one that uses common sense.

Building vehicles is the focus of the game, however, it is very undeveloped. To build a vehicle, first it is needed to find a base of it, then gather parts – either by finding them around the map or buying them with FUN. You can build your own vehicles, and you are free to customize existing ones, which you get from finding blueprints. Interestingly, during the game the player will make land and flying vehicles as well as submarines. The game always provides you with a working blueprint of what you need though, so it is not Kerbal Space Program by any means – assembling a vehicle you need is just a few clicks at best, customizing them or coming up with your own ideas is redundant. I have to add that this game is arcade and nor vehicles nor anything else behaves like it would in real life, so don’t expect any kind of simulation from it. Once you build a necessary vehicle you may complete a quest. There’s only a handful of quests and the game is only few hours long. After each quest there’s a lot of colorful sparks flying around and a sound of clapping so the player can feel awesome.

The gameworld is exceptionally tiny. It’s just one location which can be flied through in a matter of one minute. At least there’s also an underwater part, but it doesn’t add much. Cargo!’s world is the smallest I have ever seen in a video game and I don’t think it even has any competition in this regard. When you fly too far away you are presented with a message telling you to turn back and if you don’t the game will teleport you back. At least not to make the location too boring the game is divided into four different seasons: Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer, which make the world look quite different.

While the graphics are very nice and the game is quite pretty, the sounds are very basic and voice overs are terrible. I did not want to listen to them anymore after a short time and just read the text and skipped listening to them. What’s worse the quality of writing is equal to voice overs – it’s so bad that the sole reason why I read it was only for the purpose of letting you know in this quickie how bad it is – it’s atrocious! Not only it barely makes sense, but also it’s just simply dumb and tries hard to be funny but fails at it terribly. Music is not much better either and it didn’t annoy me only because the game is so short that I barely begun to play it when I have already finished it through the end… actually not quite. I did not manage to complete the last quest available in the game because of a game-breaking bug, even though I did not encounter any bugs before. I only watched a walkthrough of this quest and outro on the Internet. This means, however, that the bug does not affect everyone and I had happen to have been just unlucky. In addition to the story mode there is also a sandbox mode, but because of a tiny gameworld and arcade physics it does not really provide any pleasure nor will it allow you to come up with crazy ideas for vehicles as there aren’t that many parts to build with anyway. The game has two endings, which depend on the player’s performance in saving naked midgets.

There isn’t much more to the game. Cargo! The quest for gravity is a game that doesn’t really have anything amusing to offer and can be completed in just six hours. Although the game tells the player to do a lot of things for FUN, there isn’t much fun in it. I can’t really recommend it to anyone as the only interesting point of this game, perhaps besides its weirdness, is building vehicles, but since it’s so simplified and undemanding it’s hardly a reason to play Cargo!. There’s at least one game that does it much better and can be played much longer than what Ice-Pick Lodge presented to us.

This game is a odd, wacky, and just plain weird. I can imagine this game being thought of one late night at the office with nothing better to do. Theories asside, lets talk about the game.

The story of the game is somewhat hard to follow, but without trying to give out spoilers here, you must help these mechanical "gods" re-create the world with your engineering and creative powers. There are four seasons in the game, each one with different themes, like winter freezes all the water so you can drive on it. The game took me about six hours to finish, and thats with me messing around a bit. After you finish the story mode there are little to no reasons to do it again. The only thing for replay is sandbox mode, where you play around on the island with many (but limited) tools, making any vehicle your heart desires.

One small thing this game did horribly is sound, the begining sequence the voice acting was bad enough to make me want to quit the game. It got better from there, but the sound just isnt there in this game.

Throughout the game there is a little bar at the bottom of the screen that tells you what to do next, but I would of rather seen a check list menu or really anything other than this. It doesnt grab your attention easily, and I offen times would find my self forgeting about it and wondering what to do next. Other times when I did see it, what it said didnt make sence, one example that tool me awile to figure out was, near the end of the game it told me to "Find a large object" and it tool me almost fifteen minutes to figure out what I was suppost to do.

Now the big grabber in the game, making your own vehicle, is somthing this game does fairly well, you startout with a base for your vehicle and build from there. So, say you want to build a car, start with a car base, add a few connectors, add wheels to the connectors. and you are all set! However, on occasion you will run into problems. The game gives you blueprints that you can find, these are pre-made vehicles that
A. get the job done,
B. Are faster to make and,
C. Look cooler than anything I could make.
By the end of the second season I found myself going to these rather than building anything myself. Also the gravity and physics in this game dont feel right. Planes and helicopters feel like they're made from paper, the cars are too drifty, and the boats feel like your anchor is alwase down.

All in all this game is a quirky, fun, just plain weird building game that lets you be creative in a world full of weird things. But the story isnt there, the gameplay is diffferent and it really feels like its incomplete. But if you have six plus hours to burn, this isnt the worst of all choices. (Just dont get it for full price) :)

Nice game to just experience and enjoy its sheer different way of going about the gameplay experience it provides the interacter.

Too bad we got too many preconceptions of how a game should play, look and progress to give a decent shot to efforts like this that stray from the established norm.

I like this game, I've completed it twice. It's ♥♥♥♥ing weird, which is what I have come to expect from Ice-Pick Lodge, and why they're probably my favourite developer. They never play it safe, and they're always trying something new.

Cargo is totally strange, set around a rather shakey premise (stopping the rotation of the planet would NOT "switch off" gravity... I'm just saying) involving harvesting Fun (the game's currency) from little naked dudes and conversing with these mechanical "gods" with grotesque circus masks...

The voice acting is dreadful (may just be a problem with the English version, the developers are based in Russia), the music is obnoxious and the controls at times can be frustrating. The story is convoluted and doesn't make a lot of sense, and the tasks the game has you carry out are nonsensical and vague. So why do I like it? I am not entirely sure, it just has a certain charm to it, it made me think about metaphysics I didn't expect it to and on occasion surprised me.

My recommendation is don't play this if you expect a polished or familiar experience, but if you want to play a game that is nothing like anything you've played before I can't think of many better candidates.

An entertaining, if confusing, game

Story Summary: Three bumbling Gods responsible for recreating Earth as an experiment hire a zeppelin captain and his pilot/mechanic Flawkes to deliver parts so they can repair their planet-building machine. The devil, who sabotaged the planet-building machine, talks Flawkes into editing the Earth into his own image. Flawkes must entertain the proto-humans (called Buddies) to produce FUN, a currency that can be used to build machines and pull heavy objects out of the stratosphere.

This game is a mix of puzzle-solving and building and driving around in your own crazy vehicles. The faster/higher they go, the more entertained the Buddies will become and the more FUN you earn.

Playtime: about 6 hours to complete the story mode

* The story and visuals are hilarious at times: the first time I had a “Buddy dance party”, I was laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe.
* Vehicle building is easy and fun, designs can be saved and reloaded at will. Or, if you don't enjoy it, you can use pre-made blueprints and skip vehicle building altogether.
* Game lets you import and use your own music for Buddy dances.

* Crashes, bugs, and insufficient auto-saves. Twice I managed to strand a submarine underneath the seafloor, once while going past a loading screen and another while editing the submarine when it was resting on the sea floor. The game only autosaves at the beginning of a new season, and seasons are very long. I’ve also read reports of the game failing to load saves made at particular times.

*** Important: if you decide to play this, save your game often and save in a new slot each time. ***

* Sometimes it’s hard to know what the game expects you to do. I had to consult a walkthrough for the volcano restarting section in winter, and for the tornado sequence in summer. I also had to look up online what the key for placing clefs was. (Enter.) This might be due to poorly-done translation of the guiding text (Cargo was originally developed in Russian.)
* Airplanes don’t control well.

If you’re a fan of games with weird characters and settings, like Zeno Clash, a fan of games where you build vehicles, like Spore or Kerbal Space Program, or a fan of silly nonsense humor, I think you'll enjoy this game.

This game is a wonderful experience.

weird game. really weird. but very fun too. if you can look past the jankiness and incoherent story and just go with it, it's a fun game. making vehicles and making the physics break.

You are Flawkes. And despite your possible brain damage and questionable fashion choices, the gods need you to keep their newest creation alive. Perfect though they are, the Buddies are easily distracted and prone to drowning. If you think they are annoying, insufferable, little ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s who aren't even fit to be kicked in their bare, naked asses because it gives them too much pleasure, well, that's probably the brain damage talking.

So keep those Buddies entertained, patiently listen to the gods' wisdom, and build crazy contraptions for whatever purpose you see fit. Oh, and occasionally toss a piano into the sinkhole to gather some more fun. You'll get the hang of it quick enough.

What the actual flying ♥♥♥♥♥ did I just play? What a strange game. I felt like I was on drugs again and not the good kind. It's certainly different and if you are looking for something different give this weird pile of ♥♥♥♥ a try. I don't even know what genre other than "adventure" this falls under.
