About This Game

Super Meat Boy is a tough as nails platformer where you play as an animated cube of meat who's trying to save his girlfriend (who happens to be made of bandages) from an evil fetus in a jar wearing a tux.

Our meaty hero will leap from walls, over seas of buzz saws, through crumbling caves and pools of old needles. Sacrificing his own well being to save his damsel in distress. Super Meat Boy brings the old school difficulty of classic NES titles like Mega Man 2, Ghost and Goblins and Super Mario Bros. 2 (The Japanese one) and stream lines them down to the essential no BS straight forward twitch reflex platforming.

Ramping up in difficulty from hard to soul crushing SMB will drag Meat boy though haunted hospitals, salt factories and even hell itself. And if 300+ single player levels weren't enough SMB also throws in epic boss fights, a level editor and tons of unlock able secrets, warp zones and hidden characters.
  • Story mode, featuring over 300 levels spanning 5+ chapters
  • Play as a Head Crab! (Steam Exclusive)
  • 33 legitimate Achievements
  • Warp zones that will warp you into other games
  • Over 16 unlockable able and playable characters from popular indie titles such as, Minecraft, Bit.Trip, VVVVVV and Machinarium
  • Epic Boss fights
  • Full Level Editor and Level Portal (January 2011)
  • A story so moving you will cry yourself to sleep for the rest of your life

So...36 hours of playing this insane game. Time to write a review! WARNING! If you rage quickly this is NOT the game for you. Anyway, I highly recommend this game if your a completionist like I am. In this game you play as Meat Boy who goes on adventure to save his girlfriend Bandage Girl from the evil Dr. Fetus who flips you the bird everytime you pause the game(not kidding). The story is simple, but the gameplay is far from simple. You dodge saws, missles, zombie meatboys and plenty of other things. You can also unlock characters from other games such as Commander Video and The Kid. This game is one my favorite games since I remember playing the original flash game on my computer, "Meat Boy". I recommend that you check that out as well. Hope you enjoyed the review and go save Bandage Girl!

I have been conflicted in putting my opinion out for Super Meat Boy. With all the rave reviews and it being one of the supposed hallmarks of indie games that other developers are trying to reach with their own games, it is hard to turn around and say this game is a frustrating pile of crap. I am certain that with all the oddball characters, like meat boy himself, doctor fetus, and the other unique characters, a lot of the charm is the originality and quirkiness, like japanese pop culture, or Ren & Stimpy. However, looking past the inventive and strange characters and storyline, the game itself is extremely grindy and repetitive. Maybe I have just been gaming in the land of autosave too long and can't apprectiate the old-school, recently coined "rogue-like" games. Maybe I don't have the patience that I did as a kid, but more likely, it is that I am no longer required to have the patience I did as a kid. When perma-death games and mass repetition is all you can choose from, you put up with it, but in a new age where games are meant to be a more fluid experience pushing through a storyline, it is hard to accept 4 hours of grinding on a particularly hard level just to move forward in the game. Many rogue-likes get this and make games playable without "sticking points" and crazy difficulty curves. However in some games, including Super Meat Boy in my opinion, they don't seem to understand that people don't want to replay the same level over and over and over. Overall, this is likely the only gripe I have about Super Meat Boy, as the story and characters are interesting, the old-school graphics are nice, and it truly is fun on some of the levels that have a more normal difficulty curve. I guess the only way I will see how the story goes is on Youtube or when TellTale releases a "story-mode" for this game. This is odd coming from a guy who got so far in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES as a kid, but these days, I would have junked it after about 20 minutes in and just replayed Skyrim or something.

This game is very good, it has a lot of content. It is also very, very hard. It will take many hours to 100% the game. But completing a level is very satisfying as you can see all your attempts replaying at the same time.

Vegans beware, you're in for a scare. You ever stare at a piece of meat in the supermarket and think to yourself, "Man, wouldn't it be cool if that were alive?".

(...Visit a dairy farm.)

I am certain that at least some decent percent of those reading agree. And who could blame you? When such a thing as Super Meat Boy exists, what is there not to love? Super Meat Boy is a gory platformer with a silent cast of characters except for the main menu announcer you hear once during each playthrough.

There are many practical applications to this game, but before we get into those, let us talk about the game itself. Now the plot is pretty simple, girl made of bandages is kidnapped by evil fetus, very classic tale, but what differs in this game is that there is jumping. Platforming in this game is rage inducing, yet with a great sense of satisfaction. Each and every single death you may suffer at the hands of a circular saw or a pile of salt helps you grow and prosper as a player, (unless you're aiming for those ridiculous no-death achievements, good luck) and as you finally reach the goal of each level, upon completing it, you are serenaded with a symphonic score of your past attempts; you get a recap of all of your previous attempts trying and failing in a replay as one shining victor breaks away from the heap, scoring victory.

The characters, while they do not have any huge dialogue... Pretty much whatsoever, are charming. Sometimes you may not understand what they are doing onscreen at all as a result, and that is fine. Super Meat Boy is in now way a visual novel, it is a platformer that you keep playing on and on. The cast of characters is certainly an interesting thing to begin with, several other video game characters, mainly from indie games, can aid Meat Boy in his quest, such as the ever buddy-buddy Commander Video or a Headcrab from Half-Life, further hammering in the fact that a third Half-Life is nothing but a sad heap of hopes and dreams that nearly everyone, including me, is still desperately clinging on to.

Depressing realities aside, this game is great for a multitude of other reasons aside from the standard gameplay reasons:

-You can apply this to meat butchery in real life!

-Train to escape from those slow saws in spy movies that never work anyways!

-Pretend to paint a firetruck!

The list goes on. Super Meat Boy is, in my opinion, super charming. It is bloody brilliant platforming action. And it is quite literally a meaty game for such a small platformer.

I just realised i never reviewed this game so i supose it's time i do.
Super Meat Boy is an amazing game that takes the platformer and strips down every unnecessary element into a very simplistic, very satisfying series of small challenges with outstanding game feel and art and the very catchy and well-done soundtrack definately adds to it.

If you're a fan of rewarding experiences due to challenging levels and intense game play, then pick this title up. I cannot sing enough praises of this game. I absolutely love this game. There is a love/hate relationship though...as in; I hate how frustrated I get playing it, but I'll be damned if it isn't spot on.

Controls: Tight controls that are worth every ounce of effort put into them. Think you're jumping too high? Probably are from holding the button/key too long. (I hope you're not using a keyboard!)

Graphics: Throw back graphics that due the game justice as it isn't a "find this on the screen" type objective. The graphics work.

Sound: GREAT MUSIC! Holy crap the music never gets old, and the sound effects are great...even when your meat goes "squish*

Overall: I'd have to stem a rating of about 9.5/10. I can't say it's perfect, but damn if it isn't close. I've bought this game 6 times (twice for myself - 360 and Steam, and 4 copies for friends.) that is how much I enjoy the crap out of this game.

You WILL be challenged, and you CAN get through the levels through patience and skill. Timing is key, and how high you jump is also a factor. For even more variation of play, play with a friend and hot seat levels you get stuck on. You'll see how they are trying to get through the levels and how you might try something different. There isn't always just 1 single way to get through a level (at least early on...later levels there are much less options for completion)

Go get this game!

Instead of letting you set the keybinds, the developers locked this port into "arrow keys only" because they want you to use a controller.
...Even though this is a PC port.

Still a 9/10 game.
