About This Game

According to the Flat Kingdom’s legends, the world was once filled with malice and chaos because the 3D realm dominated all. But one day, a wise sorcerer created six Magical Jewels that kept the effects of the third dimension at bay, granting peace and prosperity to the beautiful 2D world.

However, one day an evil masked thief named Hex stole one of those Jewels and kidnapped the princess. This disrupted the balance and made the chaos return.

The king of Flat Kingdom knew there was only one being able to save their land: Flat, the little shapeshifting hero! With his unique abilities, he’s not only able to change his shape, but is also the only one in the kingdom capable of withstanding the 3D chaos.

Now the time has come. Flat must use his incredible powers to save the world and restore the Flat Kingdom to its former glory. Will he be able to stop Hex before it’s too late?

Flat Kingdom is filled with fun platforming action, puzzles and some Metroidvania elements. It also features a unique combat system! Instead of directly attacking your foes, you’ll have to touch them while transformed in the correct shape to beat them! Kinda like a rock-paper-scissor game.

Every shape in Flat Kingdom beats the opposite, so sharp triangles can defeat the soft circles, heavy squares beat the fragile triangles and squishy circles can triumph over the slow squares. Both enemies and puzzles can be beaten using the correct shape and strategy, so you'll have to observe them and come up with the best solution.

You can also learn new abilities along the way that will help you solve even more puzzles, beat enemies faster and reach new areas that were inaccessible to you before!

  • Jump into a beautiful papercraft world, filled with details and references to classic games.
  • Test your might with epic and challenging battles against giant bosses.
  • Uncover all of the game’s secrets! There are side quests, upgrades and all kinds of surprises.
  • Learn all about the kingdom’s lore and history by finding hidden scrolls.
  • Music by legendary composer Manami Matsumae! (Mega Man, Shovel Knight).

Flat Kingdom is a 2d platformer/puzzler. It’s an amazing looking game and very well made. The game starts off very interestingly with a pretty nice story going on. Basically the world has these 6 magical jewels which have sealed the evil that is “3D” away and now a thief is trying to steal these magical jewels and in the process he also kidnaps the princess. The world is becoming 3D from the usual 2D and the animals and even the trees/plants are freaking out and going berserk. Our hero Flat must go and stop the thief.

The game features gorgeous looking 2d graphics sort of like Paper Mario. The art style is very unique and pleasing to the eyes. The enemies look very well made and the scenery is awesome as well. There aren’t many options in the graphics menu other than the ratio adjustment (for me only 16:9 and 16:10 were available) and full screen on/off. The game ran at a smooth 60FPS for me.

The game has very good soundtrack. It really suits the theme and visuals of the game. The soundtrack has that ‘charm’ of a beautiful game. I really like the sound bits as well. No complaints there in the music/sound department.

The game features our hero who can turn into different shapes. All the shapes give him different abilities. There’s square shape which makes him heavy and he can push objects, break wooden platforms and kill certain enemies. The circle one allows him to double jump and kill certain types of enemies. The triangle is his last shape which allows him to run fast, pop objects with the pointy triangle end and kill certain types of enemies.

All enemies have a weakness to a shape and you must figure that out either via trial and error or by making educated guesses e.g. the pointy/beaked enemies will get killed by the heavy square shape. The platforming also requires you to change in to the correct shapes to get past obstacles. There are underwater parts of level too which can be accessed via the square shape as the heavy shape sinks and you can use that with the circle shape to navigate the waters.

The controls are not the best part of the game if you’re playing with a keyboard. The keys are cannot be custom mapped and in my opinion the default mappings are not so good, so a controller is highly recommended. Even the game developer recommends using a controller as you start the game this is the first thing you’ll see.

You can collect coins throughout the world and buy extra hearts with them which will help you. The game is not very difficult, the boss battles can be interesting and fun. The checkpoints are generous. The levels are long and plenty. There are hidden sections with coins, scrolls etc. and plenty of achievements, so the game’s replay value is also pretty good. A short video of the gameplay can be found below:

Frustrations/annoying things: Please note I’ll be adding this section to my reviews regularly. This can make people aware of the flaws of the game as I don’t usually review the games I don’t like. Most of the games that I review also come with some flaws so I’ll be using a separate section to address these flaws/frustrations/annoying things.

This game really frustrated me with the controls as I much prefer to use keyboard. I had to use a controller to play this game as the keys cannot be remapped and the default mappings are horrible in my opinion. Other than that I found no frustrating part in the game.

Graphics: 9/10
Sound/Music: 8/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

I highly recommend this game due to its cute charm and awesome art style. The story is pretty good and the idea of different shapes having different abilities is quite good and unique. The soundtrack is also pretty nice. The game is cheap and will give you quite a few hours of fun. The children will also love this game and if you’re a parent looking for a nice cute game for their kids, this game fits the bill pretty good.

Cute little platformer, inspired by Tearaway I would guess.

+ great artwork, especially the boss battles!
+ difficult boss battles, while the rest of the levels are easier and linear in my opinion.
+ good length/price ratio (6 to 8 hours)
+ easy to learn, hard to master
+ every boss needs a different approach and have special weakness you need to figure out

- the water movement is a bit slow
- story is kinda boring but I didn't play the game for the story so not a big, negative point for me
- jumping needs perfect timing in some spots.

If you run into problems you can check out my walkthrough which I will update over the next couple of days:

PS: My playtime is longer than you will see on steam, if you have any questions just leave a message

A lovely platformer 2D platformer at danger of turning into a 3D platformer without your help! Quite amusing idea for a story! I prefer 2D platformers over 3D ones where I get confused easily, so I was ready to take control of Flat, the cute ball of a protagonist of the game and go on an adventure!

The game presents itself as a light hearted platformer with a simple story, simple mechanics and offers a good amount of replayability. I really enjoyed the laid back nature of this game, the overall difficulty was on the lower side, so that made it a nice and relaxing experience.

The signature mechanic of the game is shapeshifting between a circle, triangle and a square. Each of these forms get additional abilities to use to overcome any obstacles. This makes for some very interesting problem solving and unique methods for defeating enemies. If you need one reason to play this game, then this is definitely it, I really enjoyed the platforming combined with trying to figure out how to approach and defeat any opposition!

The story and art style looks more appealing to the younger audiences, but not necessarily limited to that. The typical "Oh no some evil person does something that will destroy our world" story is simple enough, but as you play through the game you'll reveal extra story bits as you discover secrets. Backtracking as you get new abilities in addition to the standard ones adds that wonderful buzzing replay value :D Gotta catch em all coins!

So far there were only a few issues I had with the game that I hope they will be addressed in the future.
* First, there were some spots where the jumping was too pixel perfect. It's possible to jump up those high platforms, sure, but requires way too much time.
* Second issue was the controls. I've already messaged regarding the PS3 controller support but even the default button mapping seems a little off. I would definitely like to see an option to remap the controls.
* Third point for critique is for a few sections where you (are very likely) expected to speed through with the Triangle. I would love to do that, but the character moves so much forwards that I have almost no time to react and need to memorize.
* And finally, some of the checkpoints are pretty far distanced. It adds a little to the difficulty, which I don't mind actually, but there were some stages with segments that slow down the pace, so going back took a long time.

Overall, I would recommend this game. If you like Kirby games, then this is surely gonna interest you. At least give the demo a try and see how you like the whole concept of shapeshifting. Shapeshifting, platforming, backtracking sounds interesting? Go for it! A pick up and play game to relax and chuckle at the cuteness? Go for it!

Game: Flat Kingdom
Genre: 2D Platformer
Developer: Fat Panda Games
Publisher: Games Starter
Copy supplied by PCGN

Flat Kingdom is a 2D platformer developed by Fat Panda Games and published by Games Starter. It has been a while since I last played a platformer: when I was very little they were the primary genre that I played, especially the movie-licensed Disney games.

The Flat Kingdom is a beautiful and peaceful 2D land, but now it’s threatened by an evil thief and becoming 3D! The only who can stop the chaos is Flat, a little hero able to change into a circle, triangle or square.
The story is very fun, and it gets more complex the more you play it. But by the time you reach the ending, it is very clear that this was supposed to be a family friendly game, and I did enjoy following our hero on his journey through the Flat Kingdom. The characters that you interact with have some really short but funny lines, and they sure cheered me up.

I fell in love with the art style! While it certainly isn't mind-blowing, seeing a 2D world made entirely by circles, squares and triangles transforming into a 3D one is a marvel to watch. The animations and character design are very cute, and the 51 enemies and bosses that you fight are all varied.
Each part of the kingdom feels different from the other, and each level has been design very well: you rarely get lost, and there are always hidden secrets that expand the lore.

I played the game with a controller since the keyboard controls didn't feel very intuitive.
You have at your disposal four buttons: one to jump, one to turn into a circle, one to turn into a square, and one to turn into a triangle. As a circle, you can double jump. As a square, you move slowly but can move heavy objects around. As a triangle, you move fast. The further you go into the game, the more abilities you unlock to beat different puzzles.
I found the combat to be very original: since everything in the Flat Kingdom has a shape, you have to change shape in order to kill enemies. Square beats triangle, triangle beats circle, circle beats square. All you have to do is just to change shape and walk into the enemy.
The bosses that you encounter are very fun to beat, and a couple of them were starting to get very frustrating. Nevertheless, it is very fun to play and the controls are very smooth, making me fall in love for platformers once again.

The game might be family-friendly, but it sure isn't easy. All of the puzzles revolve around finding an object or pushing buttons, and they are never too hard. The real challenge is in the combat: when you are fighting enemies of multiple shapes, it isn't always easy to remember which shape to use. The boss fights are also very challenging, but after understanding the weak spot of an enemy, you can easily exploit your strategy.

The soundtrack is very cheerful and it will definitely appeal to younger players. The sound effects are pretty standard, and the voice acting is fine.

In each level there are hidden scrolls to find, and multiple coins to collect. There is also a secret ending unlocked at 100% completion, and 48 Steam achievements to unlock.

Overall, Flat Kingdom is a very good platformer with effective gameplay, fun story, charming art style and great challenge. A must buy for fans of the genre.

Excelent game, really amazed by you guys. I saw your interview in "TOKEN PODCAST", That's how I found this game. The only thing I haven't liked so far is the fact that the text of the dialogue boxes cuts off when the button "E" appears and you can't read the whole thing, which are really entretaining.

What is Flat Kingdom?
Well, it's a 2D Platformer and that's a given, but it's a quirky 2D Platformer with heart!

The story is pretty standard; the princess has been kidnapped, you need to save her and stop the villain from aquiring the 6 jewels, but the story isn't why you should play the game!

The world not only looks stunning, but it feels pretty special to play. I had a few complaints with the way the game played and the occasional odd design choise, but Fat Panda Games' latest update fixed almost every issue I had.

The music goes perfectly with this well crafted world and was actually one of the things I was looking forward to. As much as I was excited to find out where I'd be going next, I was also equally as excited to hear the next theme, since the soundtrack is pretty great!

The levels are fun, the bosses are clever, the final world is phenominal! I didn't know what I would be getting into, but I can say that I immensely enjoyed my time with this game, and I'm definitely up for revisiting it in the future!

I initially gave it a 7/10. But the amount they improved easily earned them an extra point.
This game deserves an 8/10.

Thank you, Fat Panda Games! I look forward to the next one! :)

Flat Kingdom is the Steam debut of talented Mexican developers Fat Panda Games. The team hail from the region of Yucatán which includes the city of Merida. Their mission is to deliver games that are fun and feature balanced gameplay and great graphics. They are inspired by great games of the past but have a desire to put unique personality into their games. Prior to being known as Fat Panda Games the team created mobile games under the banner of Ghost Apocalypse teaming with RCK Games and Lobo with Shotguns. The team intends to port Flat Kingdom to PlayStation 4.

The first thing that I gained a deep sense of prior to the game beginning was that the game was developed around a level of lore not usually seen in many platforming games. It is clear that the story and the world really meant a lot to the developers as they were building their game. It appears that every decision is based upon this lore and as a consequence one of the game’s greatest strengths is its cohesion.

One of the aspects of the game that I have enjoyed most to date is the papercraft art. Thanks to games such as Tearaway this art style has become increasingly popular in games and great artists have been able to create beautifully vivid games with the technology available to them. It’s a lot of work but when it pays off it does so in a dramatic fashion. The game is colorful and bright and is a real joy to watch as you play throughout the game. Another aspect of the presentation that I thoroughly appreciated was the soundtrack of the game. I’m a big fan of Manami Matsumae who created the soundtrack to games such as Mega Man and Shovel Knight.

One of the things that I wasn’t such a huge fan of – and that’s purely because of my own viewpoint – was that the game was a little more challenging in parts than what I would have liked. For example, some of the double jumps require absolute precision as it is super easy to fall just short of the mark. You wont necessarily die as a consequence but you can get stuck in places for an inordinate amount of time. I’d argue that the controls aren’t quite as tight as what they could be but that may just be subjective. In regards to the controls this is another game that is at the mercy of the Xbox One controller and Unity engine conflict with the game forcing me to roll back my drivers to a much earlier version in order to play. I wish that this was an issue that would be repaired by the Unity developers because it is a source of constant aggravation with their engine.

A review of the game would be remiss if I failed to mention just how much gameplay there is in the game and how many hidden pathways there are that often lead to lucrative awards in the shape of coins that enable the player to purchase things such as additional hearts (life) from the storekeeper that you can find before each level.

A very reasonable platformer and a game that I am quite happy to recommend. The game has a ten percent discount until April 23rd on the Steam store.

Flat Kingdom is a top end indie title. I've very glad I got this as it's one of the better platformers I've played in the last year.

Graphics are wonderful and cute, for the style and world they have made a 10/10

Story Line is 10/10 no spoilers. It felt cool and engaging.

Gameplay is a real evolution of the genre it's darn near pixel perfect and top notch, If you are looking for a great platformer to laugh with friends grab this one. The price is also very good as I've spent a lot more on titles I've played a lot less.

A good platformer with fitting music, some annoying enemies and a lot of frustration for people like me who suck at platforming.

Sometimes you aren't sure where to go and especially the time challenge bits with rising lava are frustrating as hell when you fail a jump once and have to do everything all over again. The bosses offer quite a challenge with the exception of the final boss for no apparent reason which was kind of a letdown.
A meh story but fun worlds which are all different in appearance make for an inviting look and fun platforming, defintely worth playing.

Flat Kingdom is just the right amount of challenging, and I enjoyed myself from start to finish! I would definitely recommend this (and I already have) to anyone who enjoys inventive side scrollers!

I can describe Flat Kingdom as a ligth-hearted platformer with an AWESOME art design, great music and few but important technical short-comings.

The main feature in the gameplay is that Flat, our main character, has the ability to shape-shift from a circle to a square or a triangle (all conveniantly maped to the corresponding button on a Play Station controller) each one with his own strongs and weaknesses. This mechanic keeps the platforming interesting and adds a little bit of puzzle elements to the game, even thou they're never to hard to solve.

Just like most platformers this game has enemies as well. To beat them you have to touching them while on a specific shape form determined by the shape of the enemy. This mechanic works as a rock, paper, scissor but I found confussing at first so in most cases I opted for just jumping over them and keep going through the level.

The main problems i had with the game were the graphics and the sound quality. Even thou the art direction is superb, the dev's decision to craft the levels of solid and flat 3D boxes was a bad one in my opinion. When static, the game looks like a pretty diorama. When moving,
the parallax highlights the low quality of the boxes wich the ground is made off. Also, the sound quality hurt the immersion for me.

Conclusion. It is a fun and pretty game that acomplishes most of what it intends. It's built around an interesting mechanic wich is really important in an indie game. It's also gender-neutral wich may not seems like a big deal but it is to me. It has some technical issues that do not kill the game experience.

A great game 8/10

Flat Kingdom is an adorable little puzzle platformer that won't break the bank. It's competently put together and adds a bit of a gimmick that keeps the gameplay interesting, with powerups that keep the gameplay evolving throughout the game.

The art style is absolutely wonderful, and the boss fights are intimidating, clever, and fun and pretty well-designed to boot.

I have two main complaints (these aren't as bad as the length makes them seem):
First, the sound design is pretty bad. Some sounds are way too loud, the overall composition isn't mixed very well, and the Circle form's footsteps are really annoying and actually sound like they're being distorted.

Second, the game's gimmick involves switching between three forms: a speed form, a jump form, and a heavy form. This is an interesting mechanic, but switching between them could feel much better. In a game like this I would have expected to be able to carry momentum through the air from one form to another, but what actually happens is that as soon as you swap forms your horizontal speed is immediately changed depending on the form you're in. This makes the movement of the game feel very rigid.

On that same note, I think I'd have preferred being able to switch forms with L1 and R1 rather than Square (X), Triangle (Y) and Circle (B), since X (A) is bound to jump. Having transformations bound to the same control set as the jump buttons means that it's difficult to do neat or clever aerial transformations without turning your hand into a claw. However, it still feels pretty good when you nail a transformation mid-air and cross a gap.

All that said, the game is pretty fun if you're into puzzle platformers, and at 8 bucks, it seems like a pretty solid value.

What can I say about Flat Kingdom... It's Flat, it's a Kingdom, and it's fun. Flat Kingdom kind of reminded me of one of my favorite platformers in a long time called Adventures of Pip. With nice visuals, unique gameplay, and a semi interesting story.

With that being said, it's not all good. I personally had issues with my Xbox One controller and some of the audio could have been done a little better.

I go into a little more detail in my quick look of the first x minutes of the game:

Full disclosure the developer did offer me a code to play on my YouTube channel flat kingdom is An enjoyable albeit easy platformer with a very eye pleasing art style art style keep in mind this game is best played with a dual shock 4 and I've only gotten to the fire world sadly due to a significant update to the game my progress was whipped and haven't gotten around to finishing the title however I have spent significant time with the game and have to say its an enjoyable straight forward title if your expecting meat boy hardcore platforming this may not be the title for you but if you enjoy titles such as the adventures of pip you'll enjoy this title there are even collectables that will make you replay levels when you acquire new power ups but the game overall is an easy affair with somewhat challenging bosses
