Eco Alpha 6.1 Released: Introducing Player Housing

We released Eco Alpha 6.1, with over 375 bug fixes since the last release, and the introduction of Player Housing.

Player Housing
New to 6.1 is Player Housing, which will be the second way (next to food) to earn skill points. The better furnished your house is with the more variety of rooms, the faster you’ll gain skill points.

Adding furniture of matching categories to a room (ie bathroom, living room, bedroom) will provide a room bonus to the property owner, and having multiple rooms of various types will apply a ‘balanced house multiplier’.

The goal of this feature is to put more individual incentive into the game, increasing the quality and size of your house in order to increase your skills. Important to the group, yes, but it can easily get out of hand, and finding a balance of resources put towards individual needs vs. the needs of the group will play a big role.

With 6.1 we’ve added the basic system to try out, still in the works are a whole slew of housing objects to add, which will arrive in 6.2. Let us know your feedback.

Improved Controls
  • Holding shift allows you to sprint, at the cost of additional calories. If you have zero calories, you can’t sprint.
  • Holding control allows you to move slowly. Doing so also prevents you from falling off of ledges.
  • Diving below the surface of water now requires calories. Swim underwater by holding control. If you have no calories, you can only swim on the surface.

Enter the world of Eco - a fully simulated ecosystem, bustling with life. Build, harvest, and take resources from an environment where your every action affects the world around you. An approaching meteor threatens global destruction. Can you save the world without destroying it in the process?

Construct buildings and towns, tend to your farm, hunt and fish, develop infrastructure and transportation, craft clothing, build power plants, and research new technologies. Trade and sell these materials and resources to other players with your own currencies. Develop your civilization and sculpt your planet.

Analyze data from your world and use it to propose laws restricting harmful activities. Balance your needs with the needs of community, all while maintaining the state of the ecosystem. The future of your world is in your hands.

A Rich Simulation

Every organism in Eco exists as a component in a rich simulation. A disruption in one species can have cascading effects across the planet. Chop down all the trees, and habitats for creatures will be destroyed. Pollute the rivers with mining waste, and your farms will become poisoned and die. The ecosystem supplies materials to the world. Manage your pollution, mining waste, hunting, and resource collection to limit your effect on this system, or you may run out of resources.

Backed By Science

All the data collected from the simulation can be searched and analyzed. Use the collected information to propose laws and actions to your fellow players. Make data-driven decisions to keep your community on track.

Player-Run Government

Establish and maintain your own set of laws and government. Draft a proposal to limit clear-cutting in a forest, or to incentivize oil production. Run for office, where you can set tax rates and allocate community money. The flexibility of this system allows you to construct a wide variety of governments; from tightly-regulated dictator-states, to tax-and-spend subsidy programs, or even lawless communities relying on trust.

Learn and Specialize

Specialize in a subset of available skills like farming, hunting, trade, engineering, research, and more. Level-up your skills and become a master. Trade the fruits of your labor with other players. Accept contracts from other players to complete work that they aren’t skilled enough to perform on their own.

A Community-Driven Economy

Create and maintain your own currency; which can be openly traded, taxed, or sold for goods and other currencies. Manage the value of your currency relative to others by setting exchange rates. Sell items at a store and collect credit from other players. Build craft tables and charge for their use.

A World With Consequences

A meteor looms over the world, set to strike the planet in thirty days. To stop it, you will need to make the most of the resources of the ecosystem. Regulate your community’s behavior to prevent reckless use of the planet's limited materials, or else you’ll cause a catastrophe of your own.
