Update: Version 1.10.01

Good day once more, Pizza Express players!

Two updates in less than one week? Hopefully the world is not coming to an end!
(Terrible) Jokes aside, this patch fixes a few bugs. Here is the changelog:

  • FIXED a bug which caused the game to crash whilst editing the restaurant menu in Challenge Mode.
  • FIXED players being able to create a new pizza when a scarce number of ingredients in use would make impossible to do so (meaning that, for instance, should a player only use 2 toppings and one crust in their kitchen, they will be able to create and offer only 4 pizzas in total, even if their menu would allow for more).
  • FIXED a graphical glitch which added a "0" in front of some results on the Endurance leaderboard.
  • FIXED arrow misalignment whilst choosing whether to start a new game or load a savefile.
By now, you know the drill - have fun and please report any suspicious bug activity on the game forums! Thank you!

Update: Version 1.10

Hello again, Pizza Express fans!

Version 1.10 should finally fix a bug which went unnoticed for a very long time. Apologies for that, and many thanks to Mogris for pointing out the problem. Now the suggestion board should work as intended! Here's the changelog:

  • FIXED cutscenes related to the suggestion board not playing at all. Lucky should now occasionally read a customer's comment at the end of a workday, provided the player owns a suggestion board in their restaurant.
  • UPDATED localization files.
Happy gaming, and as always, make sure to report any bug on the game forums!

Really enjoyable game, and I love that it allows you to play at your own pace. If you want to sell 10 different complicated but high priced pizzas at the same time, you can - there's nothing stopping you from customizing your pizza whatever way you want to. If you want a relaxing experience or just to tune out for a few minutes and let your brain relax, just serve a few kinds of simple pizzas for a few in-game hours.

If you want, you can even set how long the in-game workday lasts. If you want an intense challenge, set an 8-hour work day (1 in-game hour is roughly 1 minute, I think) and have 20 pizzas on your menu at the same time, I tell you, you'll need to take a minute to relax after finishing.

But the management aspect of the game is the best part in my opinion. There are so many customization options and upgrades and the game is balanced so well that progression is logical and based on the player's skill level. With one exception (that I encountered, at least, I know there's multiple storyline paths) in the main storyline where I was forced to play for pure profit for a bit, I never felt like the game was getting too hard or too easy. Or even that it imposed a certain gameplay style on me, like Cook, Serve, Delicious, the closest example I can give, did with the increasing number of "lanes" - in Pizza Express, you can even influence the range of people you'll have to serve in a day.

The graphics are quite enjoyable, they reminded me of Pizza Tycoon, the old MS-DOS game from back in the day. I'm pretty sure it was intentional, but I didn't mind, the game was easy on the eye in any case.

Overall, I don't regret spending 5 euros on this in the least. It won't keep you occupied for dozens of hours, but for what it offers, that price is a steal. It's fun, challenging and customizable, and a viable alternative for fans of Cook, Serve, Delicious! that want a different take on the indie-casual-sim genre. 9/10

Simple, yet fun game with an incredible emphasis on customization.
Seriously - you can customize literally everything you can possibly think of: from basic stuff like yor restaurant's menu to the table's disposition and working hours!

...And you can also send spam e-mails on the internet to advertize your restaurant, if that's what you'd like to do.

Well what could I say about Pizza Express? At first sight you may think that it is a short game with some limitations, but in reality it's a full-fledged experience. It's a simple. yet effective and challenging managerial game where you run an 8-bit restaurant and make delicious 8-bit Pizza for the hungry 8-bit people!

+ Managerial game at its finest - you can make your own Pizza by adding any ingredients you want, upgrade your restaurant in different ways and manage advertising.
+ Storyline with some choices to make and well-written dialogues.
+ Challenging gameplay with different difficulty levels.
+ Amazing 8-bit graphics and soundtrack.

- Tutorials can be a bit too long.

Personal rating: 80/100
Got this one gifted by a friend of mine, but I'd say it is worth it at full-price considering how long it takes to beat, and remember to grow a moustache for the full experience!

A really addicting game, that gets you hooked up to the story and the characters sooner than you'd like to admit ;). The gameplay itself is simple yet customizable in so many ways you'll never get bored of it. The different choices you can take along the story makes it feel almost like a visual novel, however as soon as the restaurant opens you're immediately put in action, which is a positive thing for me considering I'm not really fond of novels/reading in general.
The only negative thing I really NEED to point out is that as soon as you'll close the game you might transform in some pizza-starved monster that will not rest until its hunger is satisfied, talking from personal experience here so be careful.

A simple idea (making pizzas) made fresh with the addition of cute characters, funny dialogue, colourful 8 bit era graphics and catchy (if a tad repetitive) music.

I must admit, when I first started it and saw it running I thought i was gonna just play for 5mins and get bored and quit. But before I knew it I was few hours in and wasn't bored at all, quite the opposite. It is a fun little game that doesn't look like much but can keep you entertained for hours.

Hilarious restaurant management sim! This funny 8bit pizza restaurant management game is a little gem at a totally fair price. If you enjoyed Cook, Serve, Delicious, you will for sure enjoy this game.

The core gameplay revolves around making pizzas by combining the correct ingredients. The staple customer patience (like in Diner Dash) will of course affect the performance of your pizzamaking. Contrary to CSD, which has a very limited management part, Pizza Express has a generous ingredients and furniture catalog which will appease the crowd which also wants a pure management part.

All in all, a great, fun, restaurant sim!

An incredibly fun and addicting game for anyone who is into cooking games, or tycoons/simulators.
Here's a gameplay & review video that showcases all the features I'm going to talk about
Pizza express gives you control over so many aspects that come with running a restaurant business. The details are what make the game so satisfying to play.

You choose open and close times for the restaurant, cater to vegans and lactose-intolerant customers by creating pizzas with your own chosen ingredients, and purchase different types of advertisements that have different effects. For example, you can spam people's email inboxes for a cheap price, but it is frowned upon and won't be as effective as a giant billboard by the road.

Although going into the game I wasn't expecting to be introduced to characters or story, they're actually very well written, engaging and fun to go along with. You have choices that branch the story's path, which makes the game even more interesting.

Going back to the level of control the game gives you, bankruptcy is a thing that can happen in this game. If you aren't careful, and buy more ingredients, give out too many free drinks, and make too many mistakes, you CAN run out of money. If you're careful, it won't ever happen, but it's nice to know that your choices matter.

There's so much to talk about, but I really think if you like the sound of what I've already mentioned, then you should give the game a try. One of my top 2 cooking/restaurant running games I've ever played.

One-Sentence Summary
A retro-styled management sim plus arcade hybrid with a story campaign which is lovingly crafted, endlessly customizable, and overflowing with charming details and atmosphere.

+ Fun, enjoyable dialogue and characters
+ Charming retro graphics and visual design
+ Surprisingly deep gameplay customizations
+ Addictive one-more-turn pacing
+ Very polished; great attention to little details
+ Developer's passion reflected in his work
+ Makes you hungry for pizza

- Tutorial is overly wordy at times
- May cause eye-strain due to no graphics filters
- Serious risk of carpal tunnel syndrome

Final Thoughts
If Papers Please, Pizza Tycoon, and Cook, Serve, Delicious had a menage-a-trois, Pizza Express would be their adorable love child. My hats off to Onni Interactive for their obvious passion and work on this game. It is truly a diamond in the rough and I look forward to seeing what they come up with next.

Addressing the cons: some sort of scanline interlace filter may help with some of the issues I had with eyestrain while playing the game, and perhaps an option to assign hotkeys to ingredients could help with hand cramps due to excessive mouse handling. My workaround for these two issues was to play in windowed mode and dial the resolution way down so mouse drag distance was reduced and text became more condensed and easier to read.

They should use this to train pizzeria employee's. I'm putting this down on my CV.

But in all seriousness It's a Brilliant little game that has kept me occupied for hours.
There is plenty to do, a story line and lots of fun.

10/10 Will serve plain dough to customers again.

Pizza Express is a fast paced game where you make pizzas on the counter. However, unlike most other games, it boasts a full storyline, in-depth management (you can make your own pizzas on the menu! You can set your opening and closing times! You can add a happy hour!) and a realistic simulation of customers (be prepared for lunch hour).

It also includes Challenge Mode (to test out menus and pizzas, and participate on the world leaderboard) and catchy 8-bit music.

I am unexpectedly delighted with this game! I grew up during the DOS years, and have seen gaming evolve over several decades. I never thought that something that nowadays looks so primitive on the surface would entertain me for so many hours!

Pizza Express is a casual game in which you build your pizza restaurant in order to be top in the town.

Gameplay revolves around two phases: planning and business hours. During Planning, you find out what new ingredients you've earned, create new pizzas to put on your menu, spiff up your restaurant with furniture & special deals for customers, buy advertising, and set work hours.

One of the cool things is that you can create your own pizzas to put on the manu, even customizing the name to make them easier to remember. They can be as simple or as complicated as you wish.

During Business Hours, notify your carpal tunnel to be on the lookout! It's a fast-paced build-a-pizza sim where you construct each pizza pie in the orders before the customers lose their patience. Up to 6 pizzas per order, these come directly from your menu. You can mouse-over the name to remind yourself of the recipe. If you make a mistake, just start a new pie.

The game simplifies baking and giving to the customers -- a simple click on the pie will send the pizza on its way!

+ Fully customizable Pizzas: have up to 30 unique pizzas on your menu.
+ Customizable ingredients UI: choose which ingredients you want to use and where they go.
+ Customizable work schedule: make your day longer or shorter.
+ Upgrades for: Ingredients, furniture in the restaurant, tables, etc.
+ Advertising options to fit any budget.
+ Decent and varied soundtrack

~ Controls are a bit wonky during the tutorial. If in doubt, press Space. During regular gameplay, things work fine.

~ 160 Achievements -- eek! Most of them can be gotten by playing through the story, and also making items over time.

+ Story segments are often quite long, and usually bring out the negative side in one of the characters. (Gets a bit tedious over time).

I'm still amazed that I have been entertained for so many hours... Pizza Express has that addictive "one-more-turn" gameplay, and the enticement to see what will happen next in the storyline. After 6 hours I'm about half-way through the story.

Definitely recommended!

Aye a papa pizza game! My oh my what a long tutorial, almost missed card night a Vinnys house. I came back to the game and opened my pizza joint like my father Papa Johnnys and now buisness is booming! I had to shut down the shop for a few months after I puked all over the kitchen from the font type. My biggest complaint is I cant change the type of dough, I mean what is this Dominos? I want to make deep dish, cheese crust, buttered up and stuffed crust, but I get no options?! Papa Johnnys started his shop with a Deep Dish in 1983 and at least he could use pepperoni! Lets make pizza simulators great again.

Great concept, better music, Papa Johnnys.

I'd give this game an overall 5/10. Not the worst game on Steam, but the tutorials never end, the way the game was designed is ehh and you have to Ctr Alt Del to close out the game, how do you make a game and not even have a way of closing it out except through force closing it. The music drive you up the ♥♥♥♥♥ wall!
