Bugspray of June 21st

Hello guys!

First off, a quick update: the new content patch is leaving design stage soon, and starting implementation immediately afterwards. Expect to have a whole new set of experiences on Unveil at the beginning of next season.

And yes, we also have a super small yet important patch published today. It fixes a bug regarding Shelters when switching back and forth in a map.

Make sure to restart Steam if you can't see patch being applied right away.

Thank you for reporting issues, and for playing Unveil.

Stay tuned for new stuff!

Shelters Content Patch

The Shelters Content Patch is now available! Comes with several, very important bug fixes, as well as two new items -- because you guys were vocal you wanted shelters!

Leafy Parasol
Build a Parasol to protect from sun and rain. Upgrade it to collect water into an existing water container, and repair it after weather wears it down. On normal weather conditions, a Parasol lasts for about a year without repair.

Leafy Wind Breakers
Build wind breakers to protect from wind. These last less than parasols and are worn out more by wind, but are cheaper to setup and repair.

Full patch notes:

  • New Parasol construction: Build a Leafy Parasol that shelter from Rain and Sun Light.  It will wear out the harsher the weather is.  It can be repaired using some materials to patch it up.  It can be salvaged to obtain some of it's components, although less are obtained the more damaged it is.  Parasols can be upgraded with extra modules or modifications.
  • Parasol 'Water Collector' upgrade: Parasols can have a Water Collector built in, which allows the roof to collect water down to a container. A container must be set in place first to collect water.
  • Free Roam mountain area: Fixed an issue stitching contiguous maps, skipping one map completely, and allowing users to enter the old Free Roam scenario through a cave. Thank you Natureguy for the detailed report!
  • LEGENDARY BUG FIX: Solved issue on which savefiles would grow endlessly in size. This was due to infinitely creating new instances of objects when staring at them on world view, but were never removed from the item registry, as they never actually became part of the Gain / Loose circuit. Thank you Natureguy for providing the savefiles required for this fix.

That is all for now. Make sure to report any issues to support @ particle.com.ar (no white spaces) for immediate assistance. Once the patch is proven to be stable, I'm off working on the next one. It is going to be great.

Thank you everyone for playing Unveil all this time. Happy surviving!

About This Game

NOTICE: The game may not work on some system configurations. The problem is rare, but we have some reports.
This is an engine issue (RPG Maker and MKXP) and it's out of our reach, since we only made the game, not the engine underneath.
Feel free to purchase the game and if you happen to be one of those cases, go ahead and refund it right away.
We apologize for any inconveniences.

Authentic Survival in Nature

Survival in it's purest form, in a deeply simulated world, modeled after nature itself.

Energy preservation

Every step you take and every action you peform costs Energy, you can only replenish by ingesting food. If you run out of Energy, you run out of luck.
Setup traps to catch wild animals, fish fresh fish, or harvest and replant plants.

Cook fat or eat worms if you have to.

Rehydration

Your body spends water to function, and also to sweat, the only mechanism to cool the body off. Water is life. They say it for a reason.
Find fresh water, refill water containers, collect rain water, or produce it from air humidity or salt water.

Body temperature

High temperatures and dry air increase water loss, while low temperatures can cause sickness or even the body to shut down. Adapt or be left behind.
Shelter from cold or intense sun. Wear clothes to protect from rain, sun or to warm up. Relocate if suited by season.

Simulation: A true model of nature

Planet rotation
Earth tilt, spin and rotation simulation defines sun altitude, allowing for a great diversity of survival locations by latitude.
Survive near Equator for a permanent summer, or close to the Pole to survive nights that last an entire season.

Weather cycle
From water evaporation to cloud formation, thunderstorms, hail, atmospheric pressure differences, dried rivers or snow.
The robust Weather cycle simulator recreates true, ever changing climatic conditions to put yur instincts to test.

Fauna
Fishes and small land animals grow and reproduce. Animals can get pregnant, overpopulate or get extint.
Sustainable survival is key for yourself, the environment, and yourself again.

Flora
Photosynthesis, water absorption, fertilization, hibernation. Plants react to sun and soil humidity as you would expect.
Plant, care and harvest fruits for a slower paced, safer, long term survival.

Fire
Fire burns fuel, based on fuel quantity, wind speed and humidity. Fire increases ambient temperature of small caves.
Fire and heat behaves realistically to make concious choices based on real life behaviors.

Body temperature
Temperature asimilation and air dissipation rate based on air humidity, wind speed and temperature.
The body will Shiver or Sweat to regulate it's temperature, and keep the skin moist if hot dry air rips it away.

On going development

The game is out there and finished. Yet, it isn't "finished".
Now more than ever we want your feedback on balance, new features and content. We want to make the game of your dreams.

This game constantly crashes and the developer has no idea why. It keep s freezing on my computer after the first two minutes. The really sad thing is that it worked for the first couple of times I played and i am no longer able to get a refund. I have tried looking up solutions but all it says is that the interface has a problem. I have a gaming computer with a separate ideo card not an integrated one. Although, it was really interesting for the first couple of hours I haven't been able to play it since.

This is more of a warning then an actual review!

I've watched a friend play the game and was jealous for every minute he played, hence I bought the game as soon as I got home. Never got to playing however; it seems the game has serious lag if you got an AMD graphics card. As such I cannot recommend the game if you got an AMD card, you cannot play the game (unless you like lag as much as a bucket of bacon).

So why the 'good' recommendation even though I cannot play the game?

Because the I'm still jealous of my friend who can play, but is actually going to die of dehydration right now (karma FTW!).

To the devs: You might want to warn users with an AMD card in your notice about the engine. I've tried to run the game on 4 machines: All AMD's, lag fest on all.

Unfortunately there was lagging and freezing issues with the game that made it unplayable for me, so I refunded. For the little time I played though I did enjoy it. I hope they will work someday to redo this game in a better engine or make an engine of their on, I would give it another go then.
I do recommend to test out the game wether it works on your machine, I hear it works fine for some people.

Most of the survival games focus on violence and how you stay alive by killing zombies, dinosaurs, and other terrifying creatures. Unveil is so refreshing because it has a very different premise: Your only "enemy" is your environment. You have to survive the weather, hunger, thirst, and all other ecological factors. But don't let that fool you in thinking this is an easy game. You will die of hunger and thirst as quickly as a T-Rex coming at your face, so you really have to plan in advance and not just cluelessly wander around.

Feel free to check out the first video in my Unveil series. It shows the basics of the game and how challenging survival can be, even without monsters around: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzxQJPk_IBY

This is a great game. It's simplicity belies it's intricacies. Great tutorial series, and a lot of realism in learning the hard way, leading to a surprisingly upbeat death. Extremely stable interface, with not a single crash or bug seen as of yet.

Minimalism

This game is like shoelaces, simple and you can't live without them. Ok maybe I should stop comparing games to real life ;p

Pros
  • Easy controls (7 buttons/keys)
  • Awesome artwork
  • Crafting
  • Survival simulation (weather, body, nature...)
  • Inventory (weight, usage)
  • Great tutorial scenarios
  • Often updates, active Devs.
Cons
  • dialog window showing everytime you climb (annoying)
  • Bugs (game in early access so not really a con)

Fortunately, I was able to request a refund for this game. There are a ton of technical issues. Random crashes and memory leaks make the game pretty well impossible to play. Menus are slow to open. The cursor hangs when trying to select objects from the inventory.

Also, free roam is locked by default. You'll have to play through several scenarios to get to the part of the game where you can actually experience all the features. I didn't make it there because of all the issues I had. I may try this again in a few months once some of the kinks are worked out.

Edit: The dev has informed me that AMD systems will not work well with the engine and that it is out of their power to change that at the moment.

This is a fast paced survival simulator, almost like an action-survival game with no focus on combat.

Very detailed and based on reality, but with simple controls. You have to constantly make sure you have enough to survive, exploring the maps to find the needed natural resources not only to stay hydrated and fed, but also to craft many items that allow for a easier survival.

If you like survival games you have to try this one.

It's a very wonderful game, could use some more things but its still amazing. It gives you a good tutorial but i do wish it did a step by step process but i still love the game. It does have very small and few bugs like it freezes every now and then but it's mostly my computer.

Food is very scarce and i have yet to find any animals but its a game in progress so i tell you its not a waste of money and its nessary.

My Quick Look of Unveil is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6xWjKZ2F9w

Unveil looks and feels like a pretty decent RPG Maker game initially but very quickly becomes something that feels not like an RPG Maker game. In fact only the movement feels like RPG maker, everything else feels uniquely done.

First the menu/crafting system is very well done and only takes around a minute to fully understand how it operates and what possibilities are afforded from base elements.
You're also given contextual information about your surroundings as well as the direct type of material you are currently standing on (which can have it's own compromises) Sand isn't good for growing plants and requires more energy to walk through.

The UI is minimalist and has an alert system which can notify you of things that should cause concern. The temperature will wobble when it's getting too cold. Your energy will oscillate depending on exertion.

The first "tutorial" is more an indication of the brutal trial that await you. Essentially the "tutorial" doesn't tell you what you need to do, instead it robs you of ways to survive making you try new things to try and advance. Let me give you a brief summary of my quick look.

When I first set out, I died of thirst almost immediately. On my second round, I managed to quickly make it to water and drink up. I believe I actually could have succeeded on my first trip, but I didn't know that you had to climb the ledge to get to the town.

On my third round, I managed to survive the night. On my fourth round I survived the night and the following day but then the water pool dried up completely, so I followed the dried up water basin to see if it would leave to a hidden passage. It only lead to fruit that would hydrate me a bit. So, essentially just increased the time between my death sentence.

At first I didn't like the "tutorial" because I felt it was being purposely obtuse, but then I remembered that one Simpsons episode when the Simpsons go to Japan and the Japanese game show host says, "In America, you reward intelligence. In Japan, we punish ignorance."

This game is kind of like a Japanese game show

I have watched some Youtube videos about this and being a fan of minimalistic styled, realistic survival games I decided to give it a go.

Cons; while the premise of the game is attractive, the content itself has some issues.
  • Random bugs that still hasn't been fixed yet include random crashes and music disappearances, which can cause a moderate amount of annoyance

  • The amount of content is still quite little; fishing, foraging and catching rabbits are the only activities to feed yourself

  • UI hasn't been optimised yet; settings are buggy sometimes

  • You can't open your mouth and drink rainwater to hydrate yourself

  • Sometimes you get really unlucky with the RNG; random line snaps while fishing, failing to catch stuff with your trap and just die because of bad luck.

Pros; Did I say that I like survival games?
    • It is quite realistic, you die from starvation and dehydration, suffer from heatstroke and sickness and running is an option (f*** yeah)

    • Dig a big hole in the ground so that ground water fills it up, plant fruits, chop down trees, get some fine rabbit ♥♥♥ to fry.

    • The music is great, really really great

    • Sound effects are very pleasing to hear

    • Underestimating the elements is a good way to get yourself killed, point being it is challenging. Resource management is everything

      Content 4/10
      Music 9/10
      Optimisation 5/10
      Realism 8/10
      Difficulty Hard

I have faith in the developers to fix the annoying bugs and add more content.

Unveil delivers what it promises - a survival game where the main opponent is nature itself. It's a beautiful little gam: challenging, fun and peaceful, with enough content to do a decent job of holding off the inevitable triviality that survival games all must eventually fall prey to.
The audio is polished, and the overall look of the game is really impressive compared to other RPG Maker games I've seen.

The developer posts dev logs on YouTube very frequently and his enthusiasm for Unveil is contagious. You can tell not just from the weekly bugfixes and content patches, but from the little details just how much love and thought go into this game from its creator.

On the question of whether I can recommend it, I'd say 'yes', to those who enjoy early access games in general. At the moment, there's probably between 5 and 10 hours of content to Unveil, which to me justifies its asking price. However, supporting such an amazing developer is its own reward. Not to mention that going by the rate of updates since launch, the amount of content in Unveil is looking to increase drastically in the near future.

This isn't the finished article by any means, but we can clearly see the base of a fantastic and unforgiving survival game with a heavy emphasis on fighting nature rather than fighting mythical creatures.

I'm a bit of a sucker for survival games, and my Library has a metric tonne of them - but this one intrigued me due to its complex survival systems (you need to sweat if you get hot, or cool off in water, for a start...no other game takes temperature, wind, and sunlight into account quite like this game) and the fact it's managed to implement things I haven't seen before whilst using RPG Maker as its foundations!

I've played the first 'mission' (there are a series, then a sandbox mode) and I died the first three times I tried it, only succeeding once I figured out the basic principles of survival (remembering Bear Grylls and Ray Mears' shows!) - Water, Food, Shelter - in that order. The game is no different. Find water first, then food, then worry about somewhere to sleep.

There's not a lot of handholding at all, which I adore, but it feels natural and logical. A superb start in Early Access, and I can't wait to see how this progresses and develops.

Well done, Particle Studios!

This game is very good, I would enjoy seeing, more resource gathering from the source itself Cutting trees, mining rocks and ores etc....and not just relying on respawns to survive 100% of the time.... (Though I did find you could make a basic axe and cut a tree but only certain types of trees that I know of so far) Buy this game, the Dev is a great guy and I'm sure he will look after us consumers :)
