What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We need Your feedback to improve the game. There are still features that we need to finish before the game release such as guilds. We want to grow our user base steadily so that we can adapt to their needs.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“As long as we have polished the game enough and finished all the main features that we would like to see in the game, hopefully with many additions from Steam Community suggestions.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Full version will have less bugs and be better in every way. There will be guilds, Steam Trading Cards, more animations(we are hoping to find a talented graphic artist to join our team) and many more features.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“We have been working on the game for three years so far. It has quite a lot of content already - 25 unique hand crafted maps, over 1450 items, 15 skills and over 200 different enemies to fight with. Basically we have enough content to keep even the most hardcore gamers entertained for months.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We are not planning to change pricing, game is free to play and will stay that way.

It is possible to buy premium currency that can be used in the game but that is not required and the game has been designed so that nobody will have to miss out on anything if they are unable to buy premium currency. In fact, we will give it away to our most loyal players for just playing the game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have a suggestions forum where players can post their ideas. We are hoping to see some great ideas that we can use in the making of the game.”

“RPG MO is for people who love retro feeling games...”

“RPG MO reminds us about the past, about the affairs of bygone days, when we conquered expanses of RuneScape and Ultima Online. Kings Bounty-style pixel art, tense full-loot and a beautiful sandbox economy would not leave you indifferent!”

About This Game

RPG MO is an online multiplayer role-playing game that gives players the opportunity to explore many paths. Players can build up combat and magic skills and acquire spells, weapons and armor to become formidable fighters, and they also may build up crafting skills and create items for themselves or for sale to others.

The game is an open-world sandbox experience where players may choose their own road, and a key component of gameplay is a vibrant player market where any object may be sold to other players. It is a true free-to-play game; even the most desirable items can be acquired from other players with in-game currency that is built up through gameplay.

RPG MO is created with adult gamers in mind, and progress into higher levels will not come quickly. Younger players also may enjoy gameplay, particularly if they are willing to be patient and develop skills.

RPG MO Includes:
  • Explore 25 hand crafted beautiful pixeled large worlds
  • Explore randomly generated dungeons with up to a 4 player party
  • Fight monsters
  • Fight other players in many different modes - guild wars, RSC-wilderness like map, last man standing arena
  • Level up 15 different skills with no level caps
  • Build your own house and invite your friends over for a party
  • Choose or breed yourself a pet from our 160+ pets
  • Become a collector and try to get all our 1450+ items

Do yourself a favor and peruse the recent reviews that bring to light the issues with community that I will here, which is integral to any MMO experience.

I posted a thread which was essentially this review. I then responded ONCE to another thread, letting someone looking into this game know what kind of mods there are here and I was banned and silenced. Now they're outright silencing people whom their mods mistreat! Nice!

I had some fun starting the game and getting that nostalgic feeling and whantot. I read this on the store's page...

"RPG MO is a nostalgic MMORPG that reminds of Ultima and Runescape Classic."

I was like 'great! It's trying to be like RSC and has some decent gimmicks, let's give it a go!" So I got into the game and found the chatroom with the most people talking about stuff in general and was just wanting to strike up an innocent and fun discussion on the correlations to RSC and simply how I enjoyed the fact that they were doing this.

I then continued to get berated and harassed for 'advertising', when I was mentioning a game this game is COPYING. Like any sane person who would talk about the inspiration from a game in that game with fellow gamers.

Then a mod who should not be in a position of power with that Napoleon Complex mirrored the same triggered 10 year old kindergarten mentality. So a dev got on later and I respectfully mentioned to him that he should look into amending some of the rules or making it more apparant which chatrooms allowed for general normal gaming talk and would be apropos.

He gave me some inane stock customer service ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t answer like "it's in the ToS when you start the game, I can show you the rules". Like a piece of garbage. I could see here not even the developer wants to foster a healthy community for their game.

Because this is an MMO, this isn't going to go far. There was a bit of potential here, and it is lost with vacuous development staff and mods too hungry for power, and trolls who get away with mentioning lascivious garbage, but someone who just wants to talk about games gets shunned.

Do not play this pile. Please save yourself time and find any other online game.

Game for minimalist rpg players (aka rs classic fans. aka people who probably broke a sweat when y2k was a thing)

First of all I'm not 100% sure on the bandwidth use at an in depth level, though any home internet package will definitely do the trick, but I had successfully played this game after using all my high speed data tethering. So this game is perfect if you tend to run out of mobile high speed (and have an "unlimited data phone plan"). As for resource use, it's not too clunky as far as I can tell, but I'm not exactly blue screening while running everything else and say another game. (eg. chrome (3-10 tabs idle), skype, steam, acer bloatware apps, unified remote, task manager, vlc player (audio/video) this game and another game like League of Cancer.

That little perk aside, the gameplay is very simple and very grindy, as you would expect from a simplistic mmorpg like this. Or pretty much any mmorpg really.
For the combat you point and click everything and watch the basic math onomatopoeia fly before your eyes. At times you will feel a little underwhelmed with things, like the fact that even if you totally outclass an enemy to an insane degree, it seems there's still a decent chance you wont 1 hit them. On the flip side of that, it is somewhat more satisfying when it does happen. Let's be honest though, there's nothing like going to the start area of a game after playing for some time and going on an unmitigated, surefire 1 hit killing spree that's so indulgent at times that you don't even care that it's all going straight to your ♥♥♥.
The leveling scale is pretty basic, and although no-cap levels are an exciting prospect it's not quite worth writing home for. As is the anti=botting/capcha reward system, although rewarding and straight to the point. Don't want to do anything but combat and still level up skills? Don't be a bot.
There are player markets and while not the most user friendly, which is part of the charm, it's not totally unusable or outrageously foreign. There are no ways of drop trading as far was I know so if you want items you can't get from the npc markets or straight up grinding for them, this is going to be the way to do it.
The "MOS" market where players can buy things using money from real life isn't game-breaking or really unfair, not that this game makes any claim to such balancing. Although, having a $199 package does seem a bit excessive in my opinion, I guess I've seen worse kickstarter rewards (unless you would literally die for a bite of potato salad.)
Honestly, to summarize this game I would say it's not exactly original or even entertaining in an interesting and/or exciting way to say the least, but where it sits in its humble corner I'd say rpg mo is alright in my book.

(Incoming "does what it says" paragraph)
This game makes no claims (to my knowledge) to be on par visually or even mechanically with the major league mmorpgs, however this is still an entertaining little game to play whether you have a ton of time or even if you just have a spare minute. Games like these are appealing to me mostly because of the allure of undiminished progress. I sometimes play this game in between playing other games (The galaga loading screen of mmorpgs?), and convenience is certainly a plus. All that ios/android app store revenue can't be wrong.

My level of familiarity with this game: 3.5/10
Overall Rating: 4.5/10
Time spent on review vs time worth spending on writing this review: Pancakes

Usual System of play:
i7-6500u 2.5ghz
NVIDIA GeForce 945m 2gb Vram

I installed the game, and this is how it went. 10/10 I'd bite the sidewalk curb and have a mafia member stomp on the back of my head again before playing this game.

- 15 seconds: guy asks for tips. I give him 3 tips and mention I had only been playing for 15 seconds.

- 1 minute: change my appearance. There is a pink shirt for men. wtf

- 3 minute: I start fighting these rats and I get bored. I ask if there are any hacks.

- 4 minute: moderator deletes my message... wtf.

- 5 minute: guy asks for a friend. I tell him I will be his friend, if by friend he means someone that will be nice to him until he can get inside his house and steal all his stuff. I tell him that.

- 7 minute: almost died from the rats. I tell the people Im dying, but they don't care. No one cares....

- 8 minute: some guy tells me Im chatting in the wrong chat channel. I mean it's obvious right?! Even though a mod deleted my message, it's so obvious to someone like me, whose been playing for 8 minutes that I should be typing in the EN channel vs the ST channel.

- 9 minute: I walk through another door and almost get killed by a training dummy. I talk to some guy and he tells me I can use magic. I don't believe in magic.

- 10 minute: I quit the game and continue to play my premium subscription of $50 per month to Gemstone IV. When I get bored of that I'll go back to playing other F2P games like Exile Escape from the Pit, which you need a Windows 98 computer to play, because it needs direct access to the kernel.

- 15 minute: I told my roommate I have this awesome review that I came up with, but it really just sucks. As usual - I just suck at life.

- 20 minute: I read my own review admiring myself. I hate this game so much I want to write a crappy review that isn't even mildly funny.

- 21 minute: I go back to playing RPG MO. wtf

Well, I've played for a little while and this is what I think. If you're looking for a game to play after a long day at work while you relax, then this is your game. I mean, the graphics aren't the best, there's tons of grinding, no animation, and bugs. However, it is kinda fun. If you enjoyed RuneScape classic, you'll probably like this game. Just don't have high expectations going into this game cause it's a piece of garbage, but it's a fun piece of garbage.

-Short version: This is a fun and addictive game for fans of MMORPGs.

-Long version:
I'll write here in more depth what I do and don't like about this game.

+ Pretty decent pixel art
+ Isometric style is well executed
- No animation. Nothing really moves.

+ It's addictive and fun
+/- Kinda grindy. Levels and decent gear take a while to achieve
+/- The game is time consuming. For example, it might take 30 secs to a minute to mine some copper.

+/- Combat is lengthy
+/- It takes a lot of different tools to accomplish anything
+/- NPC vendors can run out of items
- Captchas are frequent and annoying.

So overall I would give this game a 7.3/10. It's fairly fun if you have some patience, and I would recommend it to adult gamers nostalgic for oldie style games, teen gamers interested in the retro genre, and fans of MMORPGs looking for a game to kill a few hours.

A game that is plagued by bad moderation. Let me start out by saying this game is a carbon copy of Runescape Classic. The way combat works, experience is calculated, factors (weapon aim, weapon power), dropping weapons on death, fishing, mining, the little thought bubbles that appear over your head when you are training a skill, the tutorial island is literally called "tutorial island"... you get the idea.

Now, I'm not bashing the game for mimicing Runescape classic because I very much enjoy RSC. This is the next best option since real RSC, a 15 year old game, is dead and also has an absurd $10/month subscription fee for its age.

What I think is absolutely asenine is the fact that you will get muted or banned if you so much as mention Runescape Classic. You heard right. In a game that is in pretty much all aspects a parellel to RSC, the mods are so insecure about losing their playerbase that you will be banned if you talk about the direct inspiration for their game. Maybe if they weren't so ban happy (You Can Be Banned For Talking Like This) and losing players from terrible moderation then RPG MO wouldn't need this rule.

I have no idea how a developer can actively condemn those who play due to their love of RSC/Ultima Online by punishing them if they so much as acknowledge the games that brought them to RPG MO... they also brought RPG MO into existence in the first place.

It's even more painfully ironic when a review that is highlighted on their steam store page reads "RPG MO reminds us about the past, about the affairs of bygone days, when we conquered expanses of RuneScape and Ultima Online". Thanks GameGlaz, although I'm not too sure your review would have been so well received by the developers had it been said within the game itself.

That being said, if you like Runescape Classic but without the 3D, fleshed out quests, and active PvP scene then you might enjoy this game for an hour or two until you either stop playing out of boredom, get on a Runescape Classic private server, or (most likely) get muted for saying "anyone else here play RSC?" in the chat. Because God forbid someone mentions the game that shall not be named.

tl;dr an inferior runescape classic. If you like retro MMOs, you'll probably be able to squeeze a few hours out of this game until you get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off and return to the real thing or a private server of the real thing. The moderation team is god awful and is accompanied by a terrible, strict user agreement with nonsensical and downright ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rules IE DON'T TALK ABOUT RETRO MMOS IN A RETRO-STYLE MMO. If you spend your time in roleplaying IRCs, follow most things you type with ":)" and were bullied in high school, you might enjoy it longer due to the fact you'll probably get moderator status and ruin an otherwise decent little time waster.

@Marxgames, the majority of your negative reviews take into account the moderation... maybe you should take a hint and FIX IT. But you can continue to cite how we agree to the rules and appease yourself and not the players. We just won't spend any money on your game.

Also, this isn't a troll review. You can play the game through your browser, which is what I did. I just got fed up enough to download the game on steam, ran it for 5 minutes so I could review it, and then I reviewed it. So don't act like playtime is a valid factor to dismiss my criticisms when the easier and more convenient way for new players to find and play your game is via browser as opposed to downloading it. I have a solid 5 hours logged and that was more than enough time for me to fully evaluate my experience with the game.

Let me once again reiterate that you can continue to be a broken record about your policies/terms/agreements/whatever but if most of your negative reviews take these into account then maybe a change is in order. But it's your game, if you don't want my money and just want to please yourself then that's fine too I guess.

Also, I love the rule against implied cursing. Amazing restriction for a game made "with adult gamers in mind" LM*O.

Where exactly are all the positive reviews for this game coming from? Really?
Let's go over this:
- It's been out four years and the interface stops responding sometimes. Bugs and unresponsiveness in such a simple game is utterly unacceptable after that amount of time.
- I've seen two snide dev responses (so far) to reviews on here. Which is comical. Do these idiots even read the comments and reviews before they respond?
- Gameplay idea and mechanics pretty much stolen from Runescape Classic. As a bonus, no animations. You're damn right this hunk of ♥♥♥♥ better be free, for that minimal amount of "effort."
- CAPTCHA system is utter trash. I think it's in place to prevent botting and AFKing, which is cute. Then it wants to parcel out meager amounts of XP as a reward for wasting your time. They could have put more thought into it.
-Didn't play enough to see how grindy it is, but I can imagine. Also, got a cash shop on the website? Shove off.

Seriously, just go play Runescape. This is a dead end. AVOID.

To start off, lest talk about the pros,
- nice oldschool graphics.
And thats all the pros.
Next the cons.
- way too much grind. I have played destiny and WARFRAME, and it still has more grind than them, it takes AGES to do anything. If you want to farm you would have to play for hours to get the island.
-I would go on but it is the same with everyone elses arguments. so read them.

RPG MO truely is a kickback to old-school online RPGs. The graphics and gameplay are very nostalgic and addictive, and I can honestly say that it wasn't hard to put a couple hundred hours into this game. With that being said, I can't recommend it -- why, you might ask? It may sound cliche, but, that's right, you got it, the management. :/

(*As an initial note, I have never been muted or banned in the entirety of my gameplay.*)

I'm not going to generalize, because the majority of the mods (who simply love and play the game enough to volunteer their time to help keep the peace) are nice folks, and very level-headed. However, it's impossible to play the game for a decent amount of time without witnessing at least couple of them (who shall remain unnamed), show an insane amount of bias towards certain players they like (who shall also remained unnamed), or act out in entirely immature ways that just cannot be respected.

This wouldn't be such a problem, except they are immune to criticism. Openly voicing your concern will get you muted/banned (as I've witnessed happen on many occasions), and reporting said behavior to the developers is useless, because they also show favoritism and immaturity. If you take a gander through posts and replies that the developer had made to reviews, you can view this child-like temperament in action.

It's a damn shame, because the game has promise, but I can't see suitable growth or longetivity in the future, simply because of the lack of professionalism.

Long story short:

Pros -

*Old-school flavor
*Interesting maps to explore
*Addictive gameplay
*Consistent updates
*Helpful and friendly player-base
*Balanced cash shop

Cons -

*No animations (as of yet)
*Clunky movement
*Little variation between different skills
*Repetitive, mindless quests
*Unprofessional and power abusive mods
*Immature management

Playing RPG MO is like grinding away on one of your old nostalgic MMO's, all the while a rag-tag crew of fragile-egoed toddlers are in control of your account's fate.

Im not good at writing reviews so ill keep this short and sweet

"5* Would call in sick again"

Came into this game after hearing nothing about it,

2 Hours later - Made a friend whilst fishing talked about life, hes a good guy

4 Hours later - Someone buys 2x exp for the server, the community goes crazy everyone is getting involved the community is amazing!

6 hours later - Wait ive got work tomorrow but everyone is keeping me away with the 2x exp.

8 hours later - I call in sick to work - told them i had a stomache bug, i lied i have a game addiction problem and this RPG is giving me everything i need to go on.

The server went down for maintence for about 30 mins. Me having pulled an all nighter i decide this is the perfect time to take a quick nap and come back refreshed. I spend an hour on the wiki learning about the game. I've still not slept.

10 hours later - i need to eat but i cant leave my chair, this game is seriously addictive

12 Hours later - the game really reminds me of runescape and the community is great its a laugh! Im playing FF7 OST and killing ghosts, life couldnt get any better.....and then the based 2x exp gods bless us again! The server goes crazy - who is this man buying 2x exp all the time, we decide to make a statue for him.

14 hours later - im getting 2x exp withdrawals. The game is really fun. I need to sleep. I cant stop playing.

If any of my friends read this and havent heard from me in a while please try to find me on this game - 5* Would call in sick again

Played the game for a couple of hours. Saw it was created using an engine equal to RPG Maker... made a statement about my curiosity as to how long it took to make this game. Had NUMEROUS white knights run to yell at me about it. Defended myself vs their numerous attacks about my personal being (never once spoke out against them personally) had two pop ups show up about chat rules FOLLOWED the rules but continued the discussion trying to help these white knights understand I wasn't attacking them just asking a question.

Got KICKED by a mod... this game allows biased mods to ban based on NON RULE BREAKING chat without actually saying a single word other than forcing rule pop ups (which I did NOT violate).

They were brought in by regulars and enforced their opinions. DO NOT BOTHER with this game unless you like tyrannical mods that apparently have complete control over you. If you want to play an MMO style game that acts like a single player and is created on what one can assume is the RPG Maker engine (low res with very minimal original art) then have fun lol

Let me add... I wasn't KICKED I was BANNED for simply talking to other players about the game and it's creation. WITHOUT any kind of real warning and without actually violating any of the rules posted to me. I was BANNED! Get that into your minds... you can be BANNED and LOSE EVERYTHING if you decide to discuss something the mods do not like without breaking the RULES and without any mod saying squat to you. Save your time and find another Free to Play this def isn't worth the time.

This game can be fun, it can even be great if you meet the right people, and play the right way. Unfortunately, the converse is very VERY true. (no, this isn't a review solely about moderators. Keep reading.)

When I first quit
I left this game probably about eight months ago, mostly out of boredom for the lategame being slow and largely just lacking content. It seems like it wants to be something along the lines of Runescape, but it just can't manage because instead of content in the late game, you just get filler.

Example: Smithing. You get to the point where you can make steel, and then you make steel for the rest of eternity, due to materials being overly difficult to obtain, or steel being the better option when you do the cost-benefit analysis.

Current state
Eight or so months have passed now, and I'm back. I honestly can't see many changes that have taken place over that timeframe (Sure, there's archery, but that's about it). RPG-MO has been (and probably will be) plagued by the same issues it's had from day one.

  • There's little in the way of mid to late-game content. I understand MMOs are grindy. I've played more than my fair share of them. There's just a difference between fun grinding and endless mind destroying grinding. This game needs something at middle-upper levels that gets people excited, something unique to look forward to and work towards.

  • There's issues with chat mods being jumpy. To their credit, they put up with a lot of crap in a day. (and before anyone speculates, I have never even recieved so much as a warning or removal of a message) Changed this for two reasons. They've been -trying- to improve lately. There's some days that they get flak over doing things right, and other days where they certainly DESERVE flak for being too jumpy, and sometimes even breaking their own rules directly after enforcing them! For the sake of not getting this review removed, I won't post examples, but I'm more than happy, willing, and able to share screenshots with people who contact me.

  • The documentation on the game is poor/remains to be poor. If all the info were centered in one wiki instead of spread out across three places (the forums, the wikia, and the in-game wiki), it would be much MUCH easier

  • The UI design is lacking and in some places, downright incompetent (namely the bank and the market). One example of this is when you're using the market to trade with a specific person -- why offer a dropdown where the name is if you know it won't even fit on the screen? Instead, make it pop up a list of people you've recently whispered/who've talked in chat/who are on your friends list.

  • The game relies on mods (which come included) to fix gaping issues with some of the systems. I understand the developers would like to give people options to fix or leave something alone, but this should be given in the form of an options menu (which is considered as base-game) instead of a mods menu. This gets back to the whole UI issue above.

  • Some controls are downright unlisted. Nowhere that I saw mentioned you had to ctrl+left click an item in your bank to favorite it. Might have missed it, but it's not even there.

  • The world map is highly outdated. If you open a local map, it's fine, but unless you're experienced and know all of the locations, you're going to be asking questions.

  • Combat tends to be fairly bland, particularly with the complete lack of animations. It's difficult to find someone to animate everything, but it's something that desperately needs to be done for the game's future playability.

I've tried to love this game, I really have. Despite this, my review may even come across as harsh, or even toxic. I'll probably end up playing it more to see how it turns out, but in its current state, I simply cannot recommend it because there are many issues that have been left alone for so long.

Fix Your Chat Mods.

Abusing the power of the rules, hiding the rules, most mods claim you broke a rule then link the rules that only go through the first 9 non chat rules, even if you break rule 11 you would never know which one you broke and asking about it can get you banned.

The mods enforce rules how they see fit, you can go months of playing, talking to mods, having fun, then one jerk mod gets on and bam, the whole place goes to the mad house.

I would say this game is fun but without the community its not fun, the mods remove the community and trying to play without chat you might as well go learn carpentry irl with how long it takes. The community (which the players are often grea) cuts that, but the mods ruin it...

I've spent money on this game, I wont spend another dime, if the game doesnt get its community managment in line I'll stop playing all together. I'm not alone in this, the resistance to mod abuse is real on the games forums, in chat channels...its a matter of time till this place becomes a ghost town (again, apperantly it was a ghost town before steam, I can only assume because the mods chased away the web players and the kongragate players)
