I'm giving this game a 5/10 Some very cool ideas here, and some solid simulation building. The CONCEPT of the story is very cool.

All that said, I am kind of offended as to how little research the developers did into the actual Coast Guard. I was in the Coast Guard. Its nothing like this. This is more like the story of the most well funded, die hard auxilarists the world has ever known.

Also special mention has to be given to the script and voice acting. I think the developers voiced this themselves in their house and had to keep their voice down because the kids were asleep or something. It's "Jill Sandwich" bad.

All that said, I'm enjoying the game and am impressed with the branching storylines (complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t as some of them are) So this gets a tentative thumbs up, only if it is on sale.

If someone took this and threw a heapload more time and money towards it, we would have an exceptional gem

This game was awesome, I loved the gameplay and the story.

You have an option of a gun the entire game, I never used one.
I was stuck on two parts for probably an hour each, so not including that, I don't really think 19$ is worth 7hrs of gameplay.

I wish the game was longer and had more to it, thought it was going to be a heavy simulatiton game but it is alot more of an investigation/puzzle game.

Pros: Great idea, great story, fun gameplay
Cons: Short story, don't actually use a gun when its in the manual, glitchy at some points, more of just an investigation game than driving boats

CAUTION!!: This game is only "cautiously recommended" as it scores right on the border!

"Coast Guard" is another one of these games that I knew nothing about until I received an email from one of my awesome PR contacts who told me a bit about the game and offered a review code for me to give it a bit of coverage. Of course, I don't keep abreast on every latest game, and so it's normal for some to fall between the cracks, but overall sometimes it's a good thing - I like finding surprise gems to try out. Add to this the fact that the game claims to be about the "coast guard," and I really wanted to give it a go.

Right off the bat I should say that the game really isn't about the Coast Guard as most of us would think about it. From what I can gather after having played a bit of the game, this "coast guard" seems more like a civilian auxilliary at best, or maybe a privatized maritime security group operating at the behest of some fictional country or another. The flag, while at first glance appearing to be a U.S. flag, is actually just an orange and black striped flag. And there is other incidental evidence that says they are not a military group. So, this disappointed me a bit.

This game also isn't a "simulator" of any kind, really. To be honest, I'd classify it as a narrative action-adventure, which revolves around Finn Asdair and his crew and cohorts as they venture into the waters to stop smugglers and traffickers. It's really a mixture of different gameplay types. At times, you'll be navigating the waters on a clipper rescuring victims out at sea. Sometimes you'll be delivering someone to a destination or using the boat to board another vessel or location. Other times, you may be putting out fires with the hoses on your main vessel or interrogating a suspect in a maritime criminal operation.

The story at first is a bit confusing with how it drops you into things, but it starts making sense pretty quickly. Essentially, in the "present day," Finn is trapped aboard a "ghost ship" and is trying to figure out why he is there and how he can get off of it. There is some basic exploration and simple puzzle-solving that needs to happen during this phase of the game, but as he discovers interactable clues, the game will send the player into flashbacks that tell the back story of Finn and his operations and how he got to the predicament in the present.

The game's story is pretty interesting, at least to me. And I definitely find that the game has a pretty good soundtrack. The gameplay itself is decent enough, despite some bugginess and frustrating controls at times (particularly during the rescue mode on the clipper), but I was able to power through that enough to not totally detract from this game's score.

The game is good in places, yet flawed in others. The graphics (particularly on the character models) need work in places and the controls can be frustratingly-buggy in the maritime segments. The voice acting is very hit and miss. Some of it sounds like it was recorded during a 2:00 AM Skype call when people needed to try not to wake their family members up, and other parts simply have no emotion behind them. Yet, some of the actors (most likely people on the dev team or their friends/family) did a decent enough job and carried their parts well. It's too bad that Finn himself is so unemotional and boring, though.

I question little things like why the "Director of Coast Guard Operations" would need to be manning a small clipper on his own to rescue victims out at sea, rather than on some large vessel or at an operations center on the mainland. Even if this coast guard is a para-military group that is a privatized security company, someone of that level/rank would not need to be out in the field.

Yet, in the end, Coast Guard does deliver in its mission to tell a good narrative story. It presents some interesting gameplay features (I like the different modes of play during your maritime operations, all the camera views, etc.), even if some of the execution is very poor or extremely flawed in places. It's ultimately the story, the ideas, and the soundtrack that save this game and give it the score I'm giving it.

It's borderline, though, so beware...Whether this one is worth getting or not depends on your personal tastes. Me? I'd only pick it up if you get it during a good Steam sale or as part of a bundle.

On a scale of 0 to 10, where a 5 represents a "true average," I give this game a:

AVERAGE...... 5 / 10

Around an hour I spent on the first mission, the ghost ship. No denying I enjoyed the majority of it. The game has real potential, and the different elements mixed together do work very well - sure, the first person sequences are rough and require work, and there's bugs galore, but there's the essence of a great game in here.

Unfortunately the simple lack of a basic save system meaning you pretty much lose everything once you stop playing unless you're lucky enough that you passed a (unidentifiable) checkpoint means the game is basically alpha and not fit for public release.

Doors which don't actually work properly, to interface elements which simple haven't been playtested properly, this is a game in early development which has evidently been released in borderline alpha state.

Shame really, it really is a good game underneath the hood, but unfortunately it's rather broken and stops you enjoying it as much as you'd want to.

Polish it more and this is a definite yes, but as it stands it's just too rough to justify the cost - if it had been early access I'd have been infinitely more forgiving.

Come back when you've done more work on the game, fellas.

I really liked this game, i don't know why it has so many bad reviews from the others, it's one of the best games i've ever played. It's kind of an action adventure with the criminal investigation, good story with decent playtime and 2 endings. Only downside is that it's not really good optimized - my fx6300+r9 270 is not good enough, getting only 5-30 fps

Good quality simulator. It's more exploratory that most simulators, the instructions are a bit vage that makes you think and sometimes desperate, because you don't know what to do or just realize you are not doing anything wrong.

Storyline is good, gameplay is good and visually beautifull.

This game runs poorly on AMD Radeon. One of the worst frame rate ever!! Had to run in 800x600 or less to get about 30fps. Graphic quality settings have little to no-effect on frame rates.

The fact that the developer or publisher doesn't even bother to mention Radeon in the System Requirements is indicative of their disdain and should be taken as a clear warning if you have Radeon GPU. Luckily i got this in a bundle so it's no big loss.

This game is very low on my to-play list. 2/10

This game is actually trying something new so for that it is to be commended but it's execution does not match it's ambition. Because it's trying to be brave, I recommend it in the hope it gets them more so they can put more into their next game like this. But beware, this game is not a simulator in the real sense of it. There are some sim parts but that is not the primary purpose of the game.

Coast Guard essentially puts you as Jason Bourne. On a boat. With no memory. You walk around the boat and jog memories that then become the next part of the simulating. In the sim parts you drive around in a horrifically awful to control boat and do menial tasks like rescue refugees, put out fires and collect water samples. But after the sim parts, you then get RPG type conversations with people to learn their story. Then those sections end and you are back in a lone person, almost horror survival type situation to jog another memory.

Like I say, this is actually an idea I could get behind, it is just missing the big budget to go with the big idea. Oh and the voice acting is garbage, that never helps!

Not really sure how to feel about this game on one hand I have played it for a few hours on a friends account before getting as part of a bundle. When I played it the game was not all bad it had some annoying moments but in general it was rather fun and the story wasnt all the bad up to the point I played. I ended up stopping around the ghost ship but up to that point I was enjoying the game I grabbed it as part of the bundle because I kind of want to see how the story ends.

The game itself looks great good while I did find a few glitches nothing that really ruined the gameplay for me so that being said I half expect the game to be something totally else when I first when to play it. I half expected the game to be a simi sandbox game where you control a coast guard boat chasing down people and doing drug busts and while you have missions that fall in line with this the whole game itself is a story driven game.

This was kind of a huge let down but I gave it a shot and started to enjoy the story I personally think that six to ten bucks is a resonable amount for this game I cant think of a valid reason to spend 20 bucks on this game considering you have other games in that range that offer FAR more however the game isnt a total bust. Totally worth a play if you can get it cheap enough or for free.

4/5 Stars...This is a fun game. I got it on sale at 55% off. Voice acting is a little annoying, and the fact that there is no controller support are the only things that kept me from giving it 5 stars. Make sure you meet the system requirements, I think the graphics card having 2GB is a big boost. Controls can be a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is a fun game to play.

If this game didnt have so many small bugs and had better graphics it would be an awesome simulator. I really enjoyed it though i couldnt get off my seat. They actually put a story in a simulator.

If this game could get rid of some serious bug and optimize a little, then I could say without doubt that this game is really interesting and fun-to-play game.
I have never heared about another game where you can be a coast guard, lifesaviour, detective-investigator, firefighter, ocean pirate hunter and puzzle solver in first person simulator all together, ever.
Voice acti is average and music is OK, but abscence of fast travel and slooooooow mothership sometimes makes me bored. Story was entertaining, no doubt.
