Early Access Technical Beta at 24.12.2016 and more...

Changes in Technical Beta:
- New A* Pathfinding System.
- Engine from Unity3d version 4 to version 5 upgraded.
- Better graphic and memory performance.
- Player max level reduced to level 7. (more information comes bellow)
- Resource Tree converted to Forest Resource. Forest Resource allow you to buy Trees and Mushrooms.
- GUI and UI reorganised. It is now more intuitive. Right panel goes complete for economy and supply.
- Drop Down have better performance.
- OnHover and Drop Down UI is much better now and give you complete overview of units abilities.
- During the fight you can redrop your units only 1 time.
- Minimap is now actually do, what it should do. Minimap still follow main character but gives you 100*100 overview of what's happen around.
- Forest Soul Skills
- Chicken Skills (not final name)
- Hardcore (more information comes bellow)
- Magic Shop is not any more in the game, it will be completely deleted to technical beta. All objects which was available in the Magic Shop are now available on the left panel. After reorganisation of UI its now easier to use summoning panel.
- no more bad English (more information comes bellow)
- many bug fixes
- And many other features.

and yes, i changed price to 8.99€ for alpha,
during 24.12.2016 (Start Beta) - 1.01.2017 50% sales (4.44$)

What comes not in Beta? But was in Alpha and Why? (All this futures are still in Alpha)
- Garrison available at level 15. The main point why Garrison is not in beta, it just need a new graphical interface, what will not ready for beta release. At all i satisfied with Garrison how it works.
- PvP Forest Assign is not available because of level limit now, I think maximal player level at release will make PvP more interesting, because all player will have same opportunities to protect own and destroy enemy forests.
- Missions like arena and Goblin Dreams will be merged in the history line, also they are actually not bug free.
- Ranking/Tasks/Daily.

all other futures will be still available in beta.

What is Forest Skills?
- Forest skills influence your economy and supply.

What is Chicken Skills?
- Chicken skills are skills for chicken which you character hold in his left arm. He/She is your second character. Chicken is in compare with you a mighty Wizard and have extremely powerful spells. (more about chicken comes below in History/Singleplayer information)

As i started to develop Dark Forester, i thought to make the hardcore game. After starting alpha many players complain that the game was too difficult. Some characters like Troll and White Bear was to overpowered. Minimap does not really helped to become an information where the next enemy will come. Also AI was bugged and it was really hard to play hardcore version.
I fixed troll and white bear, deleted minicamera... but not fixed the main problem!
Then i refused of 3 things and deleted them from the game:
first one was, if you die, you lose 2 levels.
The second was: if Forester House was destroyed, its game over, you should begin from the beginning.
And the Third one is if you lose a big count of Trees its also game over.
(So actually alpha version is kind of buggy softcore mode)
After fixing Pathfinding problem, reconstructing minimap and playing a bit Dark Souls 3, i think it makes a game interesting if it's like a pain in the ass...
Technical Beta: if you character is over level 5 and you dies, you automatically lose 2 level. But it can never fall less then level 5. So if you are level 6, you'll lose only 1 level.
If your Forester House was destroyed you lose and must start from entire beginning-:) You can build more then one Forester House, if at least one Forester House is available you are still alive. I also think about some kind of Insurances (if Insurances comes, then only in final version).
If you have only 30 Trees you are dead. You have almost 300 Trees when you start the game.

Why maximal player level 7? in Alpha maximal level is 17
I reorganized many thing in the game and also recalculated experience. For example last 5 level in final release will be really hard milestone. I want to see that everything in Beta works fine, out of bugs, that's why i simply reduced max. level. But i'm sure that Beta is more interesting then Alpha.

Price Policy
Price was 27,99 then was 3 times reduced, and then came to 1 dollar for 3 month because i tried to test PvP Forest Assign. Now i think that was a bad idea, i just should set maximal character level for PvP, what i actually did now for the release.
Then i increased Price to 27,99 again because i tried to block purchases for a while to make everything fit for beta. (Community was not really happy)
Price goes now to 8.99€ i think its fear enough. For many of you who does not play Dark Forester at all, i would recommend to buy the game during sales between 24.12.2016-01.01.2017 when Beta comes out.

Bad English
- i hired a translator, so ingame English (Campaign) should be fine (not like here)

As you know there was and there is now no history and no singleplayer in the Early Access.
I was all time fixed on other stuff in the game. But now i think that History part of the game can be really great. History part will merged in every aspect of the game. You cannot separate Multiplayer, Singleplayer or PvP Forest Assign its all now part of one big History. History must be translated in English, many thinks must be still fixed. But this is not the main point why you should wait of release. This is my wish that history comes only after release. I reveal now only few things now: Chicken is a former Dark Forester. Goblin the main character is from the earth and after some accidents waked up in another world. Now he will do everything to come back and Chicken will trying to help me.
Many design in the game will influence character in the future, so yes, you can choose the side, will you become good, evil or stay neutral. I can only point one more time that both character Goblin and Chicken are seriously upset and will trying to do everything come back to the earth.

Release third Quartal 2017:
Player max level 20
Primary Skills, Secondary Skills, Forest Soul Skills, Chicken Skills, Garrisons
PvP Forest Assign
5 Magic Schools, Lightning influences by whether, Unholy can be used only during the night
Completely destructible world.

Whether Indicator (Whether random, Chicken can cast some whether spells)
Character Indicator (You game design)
Unity, Traps, Livestock, Buildings, Fantasy Objects
Over 100 enemies
Generated Forests
And many other features.
(many of this things are available also in alpha and beta. For example: Lightning influences by whether, Unholy can be used only during the night)

About Indie and developing time
I'm really disappointed that almost every not top company used the word Indie. So, we have so many Indie games now, which are actually has nothing with Indie to do. Indie is now almost every company with Budget lower then hundred millions. For me is Indie if you have no budget, if you have budget for the game and becomes salary it is not any more Indie. So i would call me true indie developer-:) Dark Forester developed without Budget and i come to developing only in my free time.

About MMO Aspect
i become so many questions where is MMO and what is MMO aspect in the game.
I would compare PvP Forest Assign with Clash Of Clans, where you can attack enemy Village if player is not online. So the same is in Dark Forester. You have your units, you character, your skills and can attack absolutely any offline player.

About Crossplatforming
As you know you can play alpha Dark Forester for Android Tegra k1 processors and download it from Google shop. After game release ill care about android version.

The Game
First of all, I understand that this game is Early Access, even this type of access is not beta, but on alpha stage, which, in my opinion, is too early for release, even for Early Access games. This issue will be covered later. The game's interesting premise is a mix and match of several genres, and the premise is simple : build and defend your own forest. One of the interesting mechanic is the enemies will be looking to destroy trees, not your base or something like that.

On the gameplay though, the game acts like a tower defense game, where you place units, and their facing, towards the enemies. You could purchase buildings, trees, and other things from the shop inside the game. Like any other TD game, you will gain gold after finishing a wave. You can also move your hero around to do some damage, like TD games in old Warcraft. Your hero could cast spells, which are weak, but get stronger as you progress throughout the game. You could purchase also buildings, which can unlock units, or to gain extra income. You could also purchase traps to stop the enemy.

The game mechanics is good enough, but unfortunately, the game play is not, which will be covered below.

Missing tower defense mechanics
The most blatant failure in this game is the game don't mention what enemy will approach in the next wave, but the most important failure is the game don't tell you where the enemies will be. As your units can't be moved during the wave, placing your units become paramount (hence, this game is not RTS, because the unit can't be moved) Not to mention that the enemies are attacking trees which can be far from your starting position, where you can't do anything because you can't move your units. This is the most serious flaw on this game.

If the intention is to create a strategy/RTS game, the units should be allowed to move/ordered. If the intention is to create a TD game, there should be a notifications where the enemies will spawn, and limit the areas the enemy could attack. The enemies could spawn anywhere, where you could only defend a point on the map. This is a serious failure, as in this way the game could not be played. Either allow your units to be free-roaming, or constrain the attacking enemy units to a specific and known position.

Bad UI
The UI is bad. The option of "Main Map" takes us to "Main Menu", there are mistakes in writing, which are OK (for example, price is written as prais). If you try to save the game, there are no notifications that your game is already saved, and also this game only have one slot. Of course, the load function is confusing too, and only load 1 saved games. Even when you are killed, there are no notifications, the game only restarts the game, and continue.

In the game, the UI is also bad. To rotate a unit, you must use Right + Left click, which are very unusual, while a lot of others have more user-friendly ways to rotate unit, such as "hold to rotate" that are very typical in C & C series. Or, a shortcut in keyboard to rotate, which are less user-friendly than "hold to rotate" but still do. Some games also use the right click function to rotate (Deus Ex inventory, Prison Architect). Also, when you move units, the mouse is very clunky, that is takes 3-4 times to move an Ogre to a destination that is still within your screen. If you are moving units across the map, this is very frustating. When moving a unit, the game, instead of using the selected unit as a cursor, use the Windows cursor as a cursor, thus creating disrepancies of movement.

The game also did not show the stats of unit in the shop, instead the game show the stats on your current unit. This is bad decision, since one must take a look at the stats before purchasing a unit. The building role is also not clear, for example, the Ogre Hut is for defense. What is the meaning of "for defense"? It should be made clear, if it will help defense (acting like a defense tower) or unlock new units, or anything else. "For defense" is a very vague term.

Adequate tutorial
This game has adequate tutorial, which is a great step, as usually EA games forgo this for a better gameplay.

Look and Feel
The weather system, as it seems not bring anything in gameplay, I categorize it as look n' feel, along with other ambience features. The music in the opening screen is good, but the other things in the game, including the weather system, is nothing special.

At the current game state and price, I suggest not purchasing this game. The game price is a little bit steep, yet the condition of the game is not very good. The developers are working on this, but like I said before, the state of this game is not ready enough even for Early Access. I really like the notion of building and defending your own forest, but the game execution of the great grand design still fails. I hope that the game will improve on the future, but for the current time of writing, this game is not worth it (yet).

OK, perhaps, i should say, that my review is not so fair and i explain later why!
Don't be confused with my English, i'm German spoken person and i apologize for arising mistakes.

About the game:
You are playing for the Goblin character and trying to create safe forest. You character is something like a mage; he can summon some buildings, creatures and can also cast a few spells. By enemies invasion i played most of the time in Ego-shooter mode. In god-mode/RPG view you have really great futures to build unique forest. There are so many things which you can summon, and i actually think this is just the beginning.
The idea and the concept of the game is very interesting.

To be honest i'm not a gamer anymore and pretty old for this stuff-:) And now is the reason, why for some people this review is not so fair and why, maybe this is the fairest review of all-:)
I worked with this developer almost for a year for one company in Germany. And, i can say what he is trying to achieve alone is amazing. This is really so freaking crazy to develop Dark Forester without any investments.
At all he is the true indie developer and i hope he has enough motivation to bring it on.

Bug: there are some issue with the music if you are scrolling the camera and in Ego Shooter view sound is too loud.

And i actually would recommend some descriptions or an explanation for the left panel, because i thought there are drag and drop function. This is not obvious to click on the icon and then on the battle field.

Just getting this game and playing for few minutes, i can honestly say that this game in its current state is pretty meh. The concept is great, defending a forest in a tower-defense type way, but the current state is pretty mediocre. The UI isnt good, the placement is horrid, and the grammar, oh god the grammar. English teachers everywhere are crying.

This game has some great potential, and it is pretty playable right now, but you wil have to overlook a lot of things to be able to play it. So get it if you want to try it, because later on after some polishing, i will probably make this one of my favorite games, but only after polishing.

At first, I thought this game was deserving of a thumbs down, but in that time I found out that, while some of my problem were legitimate, a lot of it had to do with messing around with the game a lot. you have to TRY ERY HARD to like this game so don't give up, but after that it's a decent experience for 99 cents. What's more, the developer himself chimed in on my original review and that's really cool to see a developer care so much about game they stand right up to critics in a helpful nonconfrontational way.

This is my original review, read it or not, like I said, there complaints will happen a lot until you get the hang of the game. After that no worries.

I want so much for this game to be good. I think the premise is very original and the fantasy setting is great, but the gameplay and display needs serious work. With TLC, this game can be great so I urge the developer to improve it.

First off, your units aren't smart, in fact they don't even seem to care about their own survival. They'll just kind of stand there and wait to die, rarely if ever engaging enemies. You have your own unit who walks around and fights, but he's full of glitches. He doesn't fight so much as run by an enemy and hope they attack him so he can attack back (for some reason he won't start the fight) and he seems to just run around on his own a lot. You can really need him but suddenly find him on the other side of the map walking into a wall. He really should not move unless you tell him too.

People consider this a Tower Defense like game but personally I think that's one of the biggest flaws. You don't get to control your units or even help them during a fight, and so they die without even scratching the enemy. Unlike a tower defense game most units aren't ranged so they don't do a lot of damage and they're only programmed to attack what's in front of them if you are lucky. I think this feature is the one that needs the most revamping of all of them. It should not strive to be a tower defense. Rather, you should be able to control your units like you control your character and deploy as you see fit so it becomes a real-time strategy game instead. For a good example see Age of Empires.

The least pressing but preferable if enhanced issues are the graphics and display. I can give a pass for the battlefield graphics, but it's so pixelized even at optimal levels that when you need to read something it's hard to decipher (yes I have 20/20 vision.) The display is more of a problem however in that you can't set it to full screen and your cursor disappears when you play the game, so in the middle of something important you often find your mouse pop out of the screen and that's kind of annoying. There should be an in-game cursor so you know where the mouse is and it should be put at full screen.

Once again I really like the idea of this game and I hope it improves and even becomes more popular, but until those much much needed enhancments come in I feel this was money poorly-spent.

Good luck designers.

This game is actually weird at first. But once you know the gameplay, its fun.
Create forest, create trap, use magic, use magic trap and all other.
Your only goal is only protect your land from ugly beasts.
you can call this Plants vs Zombies, or Monster thought.
I'm not trying the PvP yet. I will give the game for my friends and test it, maybe it could be fun.

Enjoy it.

Honestly, I dont see the reason for this game getting hate. I mean, its basicly base building plus an MMO plus an RPG except the base is a forest. I would recomend it for sure!

I predict the game a huge success, and i explain why!

Dark Forester is still only in alpha version and developed by one man!

I'm level 10 and know what to say.
- beautiful graphic

- physic based game

- Nice PvP idea, many Clash of Clans elements in 3d.

- I see (final release) as 'Mighty Quest For Epic Loot' alternative

- 'Never die' - better restart the game if your hero gone down... -:)

- Forest decoration, you can create your own unique forest.

- UI/UX is much better now, as after release

- One man develops Dark Forester! Great respect!

- corpses, falling trees, traps - simply brilliant.

- Non stop action, summon everything, no build time.

- Price is too high, discount news for alpha is good idea.

This is Early Access Game, so this review is also based on the game's current state. (11/2/2015)

1. Game performance: horrible. Game's engine is unity aaaaaaaaand the performance is indeed horribad. My machine can run Skyrim without lag but I'm getting only like 15 fps here in this game. It needs so much optimization since I honestly think it's unacceptable for game like this that doesn't even require advanced graphic capabilities.

About the settings, in-game menu doesn't give any noticeable options. You won't see any exotic options for graphic settings here, no fancy AA, Shadow or particle options. The setup is mostly done in menu pre-game (has launcher) where the game will present you with preconfigured setups - Fastest, Fast, Simple, Good, Beautiful, Fantastico.. oh I meant Fantastic. The launcher also allows you to preconfigure your keyboard mappings, though my experience when setting up these controls was not pleasant one. Very difficult if not impossible to reset back to default state, so I finally just left them alone.

2. UI/UX: awful. You're left on your own to learn the mechanics of the game. No tutorial, no hints whatsoever. If you first timer loading the game you'll be puzzled as to why the random buttons are placed on random places. So, main menu, what's this connect button for? Ok let's tap it.... Oh my it loads my game...

Hmm... ok, so next!

Game's loaded and I'm ready to go! Let's check around!

To the left there are UI to dropping... supposedly... your units. Cow, ok for what? Prise: 1 gold. Prise? What is this madness? Did the developer want to write 'price'? Alright typo, let's check another. Hm... Ogr... Attacking unit? What's with this power level Power, Strength and Potential indicators? What do they mean? Can my Ogr have over 9000 powahhhh???

Then to the top right of the screen supposedly there are counters to tell you how much resources you currently possess. Seemingly it's gold... lumber... crystals? What am I gonna do with these stuffs? Again, this is where the game's failing, it doesn't even give tooltip for these items to help players how to utilize them.

I'm appalled.

3. Sound: Put the game on silent, fire up Winamp or MP3 player of your choice, and play your own music. That's all you need.

4. Story: Mostly revolves like Clash of Clans. You write your own story... or so from my observation. Despite it has RPG label slapped on it, story is pretty much non-existent. If you're looking for games that has touching, well written plot, then this one is definitely not for you.

Thankfully, the Developer seems to be fairly active on Steam forum. Well, this is just the beginning, so I can't say much about how he will do this project. Whether he'll make a good product out of this game or not, it remains to be seen.

For 30 USD (US region) it's not worth it. Slash it by 90% still not worth it. Game has so much to be desired. I bought this game when it glitched (like 0.002 cents), so I don't feel being ripped off, but certainly I will if I had paid 30 USD.

Buy at your own risk - you've been warned.

Bought it because I liked the concept and it was below $1. It might have potential, but right now, you are just stuffed in the middle of a forest without much explanation. There's a short tutorial that basically tells you "trees are good, press this button to summon waves of enemies", but not much beyond that. When you start, your forest is very large, and your actual buildings take up only a small part of the area, and the enemies can attack trees in the forest directly, and calling waves of enemies often results in them just attacking the trees, taking your stuff and you don't even see them or know where they are. You do have the ability to move the trees, but given the clunky interface and the size of the forest, I really didn't feel like spending literally hours positioning all 300 and some trees closer to the base so I can actually protect them. Also, the main character's spells (at least the starter ones) will destroy trees on contact, and trees cost resource to build or replace, and they have a tendency to sail right by enemies.

TL;DR - This could be good with a polished and more intuitive interface and a smaller or at least better defined area where the combat takes place, but as it is now, lack of these things cripples it.

Edit - quick dev response is always a good thing though, hopefully there will be improvements and I can change to a positive review.

First time in hundreds of Steam purchases that I've requested a refund... and it really is that bad.

The UI is terrible, there's no tutorial, just a 9-step panel of quick tips on the UI which were clearly built with the help of Google Translate from Russian, making it very difficult to understand, character controls are terrible -- requiring you to click and drag defensive units during live combat, which also simultaneously forces your main unit to move (and get stuck moving), and a load of other technical issues that were already touched on by other reviewers.

If there's anything fun about this game, it's lost in frustration long before I could get to it. Stay clear of this one.
