The future of Without Within

Hello everyone ! I will be sharing this on both the WOWI 1 and 2 boards, so sorry about the double post.

A couple of years ago, I found artist Karousel because I wanted to create a mascot for the InvertMouse brand:

Original sketch VS Karousel's render

And so came the birth of Vinty, who later starred in her own Without Within series. The first game was free, which certainly helped with reaching as many gamers as possible. I have never released a title that was loved (and hated!) by so many people before, so WOWI 1 will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you to everyone who connected with this struggling calligrapher through the WOWI series.

When I heard Karousel wants to focus on her own projects in 2016, I knew I needed to make a post and celebrate the work she has done in the past few years. I wish for her continued success as an artist, so here is her website for those who wish to keep in touch:

http://www.karouselart.com/

If you enjoyed the Without Within series, be sure to let her know! Vinty is not just my character or Karousel’s. At this point, she belongs to the entire community.

As we proceed, I could find a new artist for Vinty and her games, but the truth is, I too am looking to change up my formula starting from 2017. During my Singapore and Malaysia trip last year, a new adventure for Vinty did cross my mind. Unfortunately, I am unsure when or if this story will be brought to life.

If I were to continue the WOWI series, I want to continue that travel novel trend from the second title. Vinty visits a new location, and there will be real life footage scattered throughout the adventure. I have a deep love for places, and I enjoy sharing this passion through the WOWI games.

However, according to most of WOWI 2’s negative reviews, many people do not share this sentiment, which is totally okay. I tried my best to mix storytelling with sightseeing, but perhaps I did not do good enough of a job, as some gamers thought the plot was lacking compared to WOWI 1. Most people enjoyed WOWI 2, but the feedback does shake my confidence to continue this series in the tourism direction.

Next comes the translation costs. Both WOWI 1 and 2 are available in Chinese as well as English. I barely broke even with WOWI 2’s development costs, and the translation fees played a huge role. If I ever produced WOWI 3, I doubt I would be able to feature another Chinese translation. This sort of thing happens even for larger titles, but the potential disappointment from players does frighten me quite a bit.

I am keen to share Vinty and Excelia’s next adventure with the world, but I am trying to grow this brand, and I think the market dictates I should venture in a new direction. Definitely not closing the books forever just yet, though.

Thank you for reading through this! Please feel free to share your thoughts .

About This Game

Vinty has been getting nowhere with her calligraphy. Her confidence has sunk to an all time low.
As life pressures her toward giving up, will she forget why she pursued this craft in the first place?

Without Within is a short visual novel that explores the creative mind. The game was released for free in Christmas 2014 as thanks to everyone for supporting my endeavors thus far. For those who kindly appreciate the experience and wish to make a contribution, there is an Extra Edition DLC that includes the soundtrack, a digital artbook, as well as three inspirational chase cards.

Unfortunately, being a free game, Without Within is unable to feature trading cards. Sorry Vinty!

Thank you! I hope you will enjoy the read.

Good for a few chuckles as the protagonist is quite funny and relatable, and the overall story was pretty okay, however I think it would have been better without any choices at all as they really add nothing to the experience other than for the wrong choice to get a generic bad end.

Just don't raise your expectations and you'll enjoy this one :) Short and nice.

Without Within is a short Visual Novel about a young woman who loses her way and passion for the thing she enjoys most - calligraphy. I absolutely loved this VN. The story telling was easy to read, the music was great and the graphics where simple. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a short game/read to pass the time.

A short VN of about 20- 40 mins with great fantastic chracter art.

I found it funny all the advertisements as well as some of the different character expressions.

It has a couple of bad endings which makes it interesting. I think there is only one or two ways to finish this game with the choices you have.

Playing it in full screen can kinda be weird though.

It's free and a job well done!

Without Within is a coming-of-age, empowering story that I think a lot of people - children and adults alike - will appreciate in their own unique way. It's a retelling of a classic: the story of the underdog. I personally really appreciated the lengths to which the novel went to explore the idea of redisovering one's passion, as I for one grew to not only relate to the character, but begin to feel as if she were living a part of my life I hadn't fully reflected on. This game has changed my life. I highly recommend it to any and all of my friends.

I would recommend this game only because it is free. You'll be able to finish it quickly, so you won't lose any money and very little time to the experience. However, this just isn't the game I had hoped it would be.

[SPOILERS] [I'M NOT KIDDING]

-The Good-

It's free. The art is very cute. The music is pleasant and usually accompanies the theme of the game fairly well. The only real character (the leading lady) feels more like a character than many in video games lately, so I'll give them points there. The occasional breaking of the 4th wall isn't too bad and I can tell that the developers really *wanted* this game to be charming.

-The Bad-

It tries to make you feel like there are multiple ending and that your choices matter (which is pretty important in this sort of game), but there aren't and they don't. At least, not in the sense that I expected. Any choice that deviates from the ending they want you to get gives you a "bad ending". I'm not even joking. They literally tell you "bad ending".

To make it worse, the "bad endings" are VERY heavy-handed. You didn't help that little boy? Well, guess what, everyone in the world is scum like you and the kid disappears and your life is basically over. Bad Ending. You (depicted as a small girl) hit a large man who was hassling you? Well, the police are now at your door and probably going to throw you in jail. Bad Ending.

But this is the one that kills me- You decide to get some sleep instead of playing a video game you were hassled into buying? YOU'RE ENTIRE LIFE STINKS AND YOU CAN NEVER ACHIEVE YOUR DREAMS, BECAUSE THAT'S HOW IMPORTANT PLAYING GAMES IS.

It just...

It was trying so hard. It wanted to deliver a specific message about how you can get inspiration from the weirdest places and how it's best to do things with a passion instead of half-heartedly, but they were SO focused on that SPECIFIC message that they lost sight of the fact that they could have had other messages. Or, if that's all they wanted to convey, they could have explored the other avenues of how to reach that idea.

-Conclusion-

Playing a game like this, I didn't want to feel like every choice was a "pick the one that will obviously give you a bad ending or pick the other one which will give you the ended we spent time on". I don't know if this decision was based on the development team just wanting to throw out a product to show people that they were around, or if it was just something they did on the side, but unlike a lot of the reviews I saw for this game, I just don't feel like it was done as well as I had hoped.

But, hey, it's free. So, there's that. And I guess it got me talking about it, which is more than I can say for other titles, so, if you want to waste about half an hour or less (depending on your reading speed), go ahead and try it out.

The Goods

(+) It's free
(+) There are some chuckle-worthy moments
(+) There are no wet dogs involved, at all
(+) The art style is rather cool
(+) You can start and finish a new game while holding your breath
(+) It will not start world war III, which is nice
(+) It's easy to get all the achievements, of which there are none

The Bads

(-) Rather short
(-) It seems the llamas were cut out of the end product
(-) Story options are of the right vs wrong kind
(-) There are more wonders of the ancient world, than story decisions in this VN
(-) My cat hissed at it

Verdict
Recommended - Because if you have time to read this, you have time to play this free game. And every minute spent on this, is a minute where you cannot learn to speak Icelandic - of which you would have no use, let's be fair.

It's definitely worth the few megabytes and minutes to read this short story. Yet after I finished it for a while, I found myself thinking back to it. A lot of people say the story is too simple, but given time to think, the very simplicity and openness of the story to be what makes it so great. There are a lot of good stories but conciseness is a virtue. The choices in this story may just say something meaningful about life.

The first time I read it, I also thought the story was too simple and all too familiar myself. A lot of Chinese student videos and soap operas like to visit the theme of the street vending dreamer. The "bad endings" are not fleshed out. The "good ending" might not make sense at first.

But alas. I am quite the fan of these art student type stories. I like to ponder them. First, I found it amusing that the artist inserted himself into the story. Then I felt the same struggles that he must feel being an artist trying to make an impact in this world. We dream a dream so different from life. And yet life is like a dream.

I had a dream about this story. This story is like life: the life of the artist, the lives of us, choices we make, our endings in our own stories, the stories of our dreams and of our lives.

*****Spoilers below*****

The choices. Yes you either make the right choice, or you are forced to go back and then make the right choice. But these choices are they not the choices we face every day? These choices in our lives that sometimes we don't feel like we want to choose what society tells us to pick. Sure I sleep in one day, or I can not help someone out one day, but what is the path that we chart in our lives that will lead to our dreams? To be able to make the right choice when it matters, is it not best to make the right choice whether it matters or not?

The "good ending" is random. Maybe. Is life not random? Do our dreams really make so much sense? To bring together a dream and daily life, something magic has to happen. It's randomness of life that allow for dreams. The randomness of dreams that let us live. That is the ending that I found.

A story worth revisiting when I wake up again.

This game is a tough choice between upvoting it and downvoting it.

If you've never played a Visual Novel game before and if you are curious about trying this genre, then you might want to start with this one. It is short and it will take only 20 minutes of your time and it arguably has cute graphics/music.

Every choice you make can result in either a continuation of the story or in a bad ending; however the "right" decisions are pretty obvious.

The story isn't very interesting and even more so, some elements are fitted in to advertise the developer company. And the ending is very abrupt. As usual with this kind of games, there are some grammar mistakes here and there or some awkward translations.

Also, don't expect any nudity :)

I started to love Vinty the moment I saw her first words.
Without Within is a great VN, it has fantastic artwork and a really good sountrack, story is really awesome and will hold you till the last words.
If you really liked Without Within, buy the Extra Edition, it doesnt add much, but its a way to suport the devs and help them expand Vinty adventures and potentialy, make other awesome games.

Without Within a visual novel by InvertMouse.
First of please do note that the developer team is really small it consists around 3 - 5 people maybe? I do not know the exact number.
Secondly i stand on a neutral ground for this visual novel. Meaning yes i do recommend it but to a certain extent. (Go to the bottom for reason of standing on a neutral ground)
Thirdly this is a FREE visual novel, hence being very short is not a issue here because it will take you around 5 - 15 minutes to read finish.

The story
Follow Vinty's life of chasing her dreams of being a famous in the world of calligraphy meanwhile dealing with pressure as things have not go in the direction she intended it to be.

Audio and Visual elements
Visual Elements - The chibi art style used is really cute and the backround art feels average but it is alright.
Audio elements - The music is alright very lighthearted and cute, it really goes well with the chibi art.

Reason for standing on a neutral ground is because the choices you make in this visual novel is being taken at face value and the events that take place happens to quickly. It is very realistic which is a good thing but there is no "build up" to the events.
Then again it is a free visual novel and the developer have to fork out their own money to make this visual novel and it is created by a very small team, so we should appreciate the work the developer have put into.

To sum up
I would recommend this visual novel to people who want something sweet and short.
