About This Game

Vinty has been getting nowhere with her calligraphy. Her confidence has sunk to an all time low.
As life pressures her toward giving up, will she forget why she pursued this craft in the first place?

Without Within is a short visual novel that explores the creative mind. The game was released for free in Christmas 2014 as thanks to everyone for supporting my endeavors thus far. For those who kindly appreciate the experience and wish to make a contribution, there is an Extra Edition DLC that includes the soundtrack, a digital artbook, as well as three inspirational chase cards.

Unfortunately, being a free game, Without Within is unable to feature trading cards. Sorry Vinty!

Thank you! I hope you will enjoy the read.

a short but very enjoyable free visual novel which will have you fall in love with vinty (the main character) and it shows her everyday struggles in live.

being free but also very short - about 30 - 40 minutes i thought i'd love to see her some more which you can in without with in 2 (which is not free £3.99) - which is fair as the people involed in the company behind the without with in series have bills as well

all in all it has a nice, short story - great art - great music - 4.5/5

It's definitely worth the few megabytes and minutes to read this short story. Yet after I finished it for a while, I found myself thinking back to it. A lot of people say the story is too simple, but given time to think, the very simplicity and openness of the story to be what makes it so great. There are a lot of good stories but conciseness is a virtue. The choices in this story may just say something meaningful about life.

The first time I read it, I also thought the story was too simple and all too familiar myself. A lot of Chinese student videos and soap operas like to visit the theme of the street vending dreamer. The "bad endings" are not fleshed out. The "good ending" might not make sense at first.

But alas. I am quite the fan of these art student type stories. I like to ponder them. First, I found it amusing that the artist inserted himself into the story. Then I felt the same struggles that he must feel being an artist trying to make an impact in this world. We dream a dream so different from life. And yet life is like a dream.

I had a dream about this story. This story is like life: the life of the artist, the lives of us, choices we make, our endings in our own stories, the stories of our dreams and of our lives.

*****Spoilers below*****

The choices. Yes you either make the right choice, or you are forced to go back and then make the right choice. But these choices are they not the choices we face every day? These choices in our lives that sometimes we don't feel like we want to choose what society tells us to pick. Sure I sleep in one day, or I can not help someone out one day, but what is the path that we chart in our lives that will lead to our dreams? To be able to make the right choice when it matters, is it not best to make the right choice whether it matters or not?

The "good ending" is random. Maybe. Is life not random? Do our dreams really make so much sense? To bring together a dream and daily life, something magic has to happen. It's randomness of life that allow for dreams. The randomness of dreams that let us live. That is the ending that I found.

A story worth revisiting when I wake up again.

This game is a tough choice between upvoting it and downvoting it.

If you've never played a Visual Novel game before and if you are curious about trying this genre, then you might want to start with this one. It is short and it will take only 20 minutes of your time and it arguably has cute graphics/music.

Every choice you make can result in either a continuation of the story or in a bad ending; however the "right" decisions are pretty obvious.

The story isn't very interesting and even more so, some elements are fitted in to advertise the developer company. And the ending is very abrupt. As usual with this kind of games, there are some grammar mistakes here and there or some awkward translations.

Also, don't expect any nudity :)

The Goods

(+) It's free
(+) There are some chuckle-worthy moments
(+) There are no wet dogs involved, at all
(+) The art style is rather cool
(+) You can start and finish a new game while holding your breath
(+) It will not start world war III, which is nice
(+) It's easy to get all the achievements, of which there are none

The Bads

(-) Rather short
(-) It seems the llamas were cut out of the end product
(-) Story options are of the right vs wrong kind
(-) There are more wonders of the ancient world, than story decisions in this VN
(-) My cat hissed at it

Recommended - Because if you have time to read this, you have time to play this free game. And every minute spent on this, is a minute where you cannot learn to speak Icelandic - of which you would have no use, let's be fair.

I started to love Vinty the moment I saw her first words.
Without Within is a great VN, it has fantastic artwork and a really good sountrack, story is really awesome and will hold you till the last words.
If you really liked Without Within, buy the Extra Edition, it doesnt add much, but its a way to suport the devs and help them expand Vinty adventures and potentialy, make other awesome games.

Without Within a visual novel by InvertMouse.
First of please do note that the developer team is really small it consists around 3 - 5 people maybe? I do not know the exact number.
Secondly i stand on a neutral ground for this visual novel. Meaning yes i do recommend it but to a certain extent. (Go to the bottom for reason of standing on a neutral ground)
Thirdly this is a FREE visual novel, hence being very short is not a issue here because it will take you around 5 - 15 minutes to read finish.

The story
Follow Vinty's life of chasing her dreams of being a famous in the world of calligraphy meanwhile dealing with pressure as things have not go in the direction she intended it to be.

Audio and Visual elements
Visual Elements - The chibi art style used is really cute and the backround art feels average but it is alright.
Audio elements - The music is alright very lighthearted and cute, it really goes well with the chibi art.

Reason for standing on a neutral ground is because the choices you make in this visual novel is being taken at face value and the events that take place happens to quickly. It is very realistic which is a good thing but there is no "build up" to the events.
Then again it is a free visual novel and the developer have to fork out their own money to make this visual novel and it is created by a very small team, so we should appreciate the work the developer have put into.

To sum up
I would recommend this visual novel to people who want something sweet and short.

In this Visual Novel, you are a famous star who everyone likes and...nevermind, you aren't.

Without Within tells the story of Vinty, a woman who loves calligraphy and who can barely make enough to pay off her rent. Vinty dreams that one day, she will be famous and everyone would admire her. However, snapping back to reality, she is just a normal person who's self-confidence is pretty much shattered.

Throughout the novel, you will also have to make decisions when you encounter an event. There is a right or wrong answer so you might want to save your game before you make a decision (just to make life easier). Without Within is good for a nice read and it also shows that not everyone is exactly kind to anyone's passion. There will be nice people and there will be mean people.

In the end, the story was rather short, which was a bit of a disappointment, but it is still a good read that might take you less than 20 minutes.

I heard the developer will "expand" on Without Within so I have my hopes high for this visual novel.

This was a short (20-30 minute) visual novel that did a great job of poking fun at the video game industry while also poking fun at itself. The protagonist is an aspiring, struggling calligrapher who has to make ends meet working a crappy job so she can pay for her crappy apartment so she can try to find success as a calligrapher. However, she realizes that she had been so focused on success that she lost sight of her passion for her art. Calligraphy, and the story itself, is obviously a metaphor for what this game developer has gone through, but I thought it was well written with nice artwork and an appropriate sense of self deprecation. Plus, I laughed out loud at the ending. It was truly hilarious in the context of the story.

Very well done, free to play title, and one I definitely recommend trying out. You wont regret your time spent with this game.

Without Within is an extremely real and compelling, albeit short visual novel about someone who has lost the passion for art they once had — and if you're a creator of any kind, I highly recommend that you check it out. It's free, so there's really no excuse.

It's a fun short story.
Where 'short' is the keyword.
A 15 minute read. Dude, seriously? I don't even read that fast!
Still, there is enough in it that it's worth, well, half a buck... Def. grab it on a sale. A big one.
UPD: Didn't realise this was free. ¯\(。⊿°)/¯

It's free, but also very short. While it tried to make it seem like choices matter, it instead just made it feel like there's only one right way to go about this story. I get it, you do stupid ♥♥♥♥, you face the consequences. Instead of focusing on one 'right' route and a bunch of idiotic actions, you could have used different actions to show the many other facets of the creative mind as it is said to explore in the description. It may have been better off as a visual novel with no choices that way, like the sequel. That being said, the art isn't half-bad, and the story is ok. Do with that info how you will, but I don't think I'm going to bother purchasing the sequel.

Tldr; great in theory, terrible execution.

This is a short game. You will finish it between 20-30 min. With that said, you will have a blast playing it. Art style is cute and the story has a good pace. When you are done you will be left wanting more.
This game doesnt really have choices that matter much. It's almost a kinetic novel. However the main character is likeable and the humor really hits when it needs to. If you are bored and feel like playing something that wont be time consuming then this is it. It's ending will make you smile.
