0.2.2 - Now Available

Grass Simulator has been updated to version 0.2.2 it’s mainly just fixes this time around but introduces a new game mode.

I fixed a freezing bug that’s been around for a long time, It’s frustrating but it was hard to reproduce since no one directly reported it, it took a while – basically you’d load into the game play a level exit back to the menu select another level and BOOM, your player is locked up or the game is entirely frozen.

It should be fixed now, if you’re still seeing it please let me know and what you did before the crash :)

Grass mode was the most common one for causing crashing and stuff, I tried to fix that one but it’s a right mess, so I’ve removed it for now until I can find a workaround to stop crashing with it.

The pause menu has received some improvements backend there’s a bunch of code clean-up that was messy, on the frontend you’ve got a restart button that’s been added and also adjustments to the quality setting thresholds.

I updated to Unity 4.6 and updated my main machine to Windows 10 so I’m hoping everything is working correctly with this update, if you see anything else weird please let me know!!

I’ll drop the full change log below if you want to see what’s changed or been improved, as always stay Grassy and I’m sorry for the really long wait with the update.

Additions, Fixes & More:

  • Added Hell Fire level
  • Added new icon
  • Upgraded to Unity 4.6 for base source
  • Added Hell weapon skins specially for Hell Fire
  • Added restart button on main menu
  • Added new cow explosion and sound
  • Reset collision size on player and brought the camera offset upwards
  • Exit Game should always work now - added safety and debug
  • Updated pause menu and functions inside
  • Cleaned up unused assets
  • Trees billboard faster and grass draw has been pulled in even more (better framerate?!)
  • Removed Grass mode and replaced with Hell Fire (might be back soon)
  • Fixed menu lock ups and added a safety enforcer (should be fixed I hope!!)
  • Made message of the day more scalable for longer text, can overflow more also
  • Fixed cows not exploding in Snowfall in some cases
  • Updated cows to latest prefabs with the new Explosion VFX
  • Player is stored as a prefab now

About This Game

Strap it on and lock 'n' load in Grass Simulator, where you will Shoot, Loot and MOO! your way through multiple game modes revolved around...GRASS!. Grass Simulator will revolutionize the way you look at grass; Instead of it being that green stuff that you occasionally see in your garden that you never mow (Yes - We know you neglect it).

You play as Garry Rambler, a rogue mercenary that escaped from hell who has sworn to take revenge upon the illusive cows that lurk among the shadows whom murdered his family, stuck in a purgatory filled with nothing but cows, grass and more cows. Only equipped with his moustache, cliché 80's mullet and magnum revolver; the exact revolver he used to kill the legendary cow god that ordered his family to be executed, he must fend for himself in a cruel, unforgiving dimension.

Key Features

Classic Mode - Explore your environment equipped with your magnum, walk among the dense grass and trees and shoot cows that never seem to die.

Dubstep Cow Mode - If being a cow isn't cool enough, how about DUBSTEP COWS?!

Shooting Range - Test your aim at the shooting range, just try not to blow your foot off

Snowfall – Walk around the snowy mountains, with cows that are pretty cold

Multiplayer – Experience Multiplayer with 4-16 players, host and create your own servers

Bad Disco – What could go wrong when you add cows to an outside Disco?

Hell Fire – The grass has turned red and the map is on fire?!

I asked myself: what does 'Grass Simulator' mean to me? What would improve in my life if I bought this game? What exactly would happen after I encountered the menacing cows the description for this game entails? What would I do without this game?

So I bought it.

The only way I can rate this game is with an example. Imagine you're walking in the mall and you come across a shoe store. You see a shoe on display that is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. One that, without it, your life would be meaningless and overwhelmingly boring. You go inside, further examine the shoe, and find that you want to buy it. You ask the clerk if they have a shoe in stock for your foot size. She comes back with an unfortunate "no" to that answer, when you find out that the clerk is a cow. You're not actually in the mall, but in the middle of a field, and the shoe? The shoe is the grass that surrounds your every direction. Your life in this game is brought down to one word: exterminate. It is not a good game and I wish I could exterminate this from my steam library rather than exterminate the cows in this game.

All in all: eh.

This is probably one of the best games I have ever experienced in my entire life. If you enjoy masturbating constantly for 4 hours, that kind of behaviour is normal for this game. There are many different ways you can play, there is a ear deafening Disco arena, the ear deafening DubSteap arena, and last but not least the ear deafening opening main menu.

I didn't know what was more important, playing this game or breathing.

The game Grass Simulator is a well designed and highly addictive shooter. It incorporates highly addictive mechanics from other popular shooters and provides the player with hours of gameplay. It never ceases to amaze as there are many hidden easter eggs and the story is well polished and thought through. In fact you could almost say that this game is perfect in its minimalistic design. It is definitely worth the money and any avid gamer should have this game. It is one that will stand the test of time and will be a staple of our generation. Also...YOU GET TO BLOW UP COWS! WHY WOULD YOU NOT BUY THIS?!?!?

This games is ♥♥♥♥ing horrible, it may be fun to mess around with for like 10 minutes, but after that is a pain, i left the game open for a while to get the trading cards. I got this game for free because i helped it get greenlit, and i am dissapointed, even tho i got it for free and downloaded when it released, it really is a bad game, and back then a couple of its emotes were like $10 or so, so thats why i wanted the trading cards.

It mostly feels like a cheap knockoff of Garry's Mod, but with small levels and very little things to be done. As far as I'm aware, you can't run out of ammo, you can't get hurt, you can't shoot things that isn't cows (they explode) or targets. And how is it a grass simulator when the grass doesn't grow, do anything or even looks much like grass. Might as well call Team Fortress 2 House Simulator, or Portal Wall Simulator.

How bad IS this game?

I was previously part of the Development Team that created this game, we was previously working on a game called Project Decay. This game basically followed the trend of sh*tty simulator games trying to suck money out of you.

I got this for free from MoWah, a friend of mine who also was on the team. It has no future, no enjoyment and definitely not worth any of your valuable money. Do not buy this game, PLEASE.

Tired of having fun? Tired of all those pesky "good games"? Well look no further! Grass Simulator is the game for YOU! You'll enjoy hours of watching poorly drawn grass-sprites in this masterpiece of a game! A game that will somehow make your computer lag more than Skyrim on full graphics! Go Grass Simulator!

10/10 would rather watch paint dry

Oh su funi and random eks di eks di. Okay, the fun's over. Absolute rock bottom. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind stupid ways to have fun. I even found Goat Simulator (at least slightly) amusing, because - say what you want about it, but it clearly included some work being done, the city was filled with easter eggs, stuff to do, there were achievements, workshop support, etc. The developer is claiming that this is not trying to be Goat Simulator, but I'm absolutely sure this piece of software tried to go the same way while completely missing the point, offering no fun, basically no gameplay and failing at being funny.

The developer of this piece software completely misuderstood the point of Goat Simulator and thought that [insert random word here] Simulators are funny, because they are poorly made and you can't do anything there. Also making this type of "simulator" now is not even beating a dead horse, because the horse has been dead for half of the year, it's basically beating a horse skeleton now. I guess that developer decided to download Unity 3D and tried to put something together in it. Nothing against him, but you can clearly see he has absolutely no idea what he is doing. The menu is barely working, "Exit Game" button in the main menu doesn't work at all, other buttons in some game mods are bugged as well. Anyway let's get to the point. The game has four game mods. So let's do this, shall we?

First mode is called Classic. The first thing you will notice is a mouse cursor visible while playing, but it goes away when you click the mouse button. Second thing you will notice is absolutely insane performance. I have about 10-15 FPS on this small map on the fastest settings. On a small map with some grass and few ridiculously small cows randomly placed there. I would seriously like to know the reason of it being more hardware demanding than Crysis. I have two theories. First is that the physics (this is using PhysX, or at least it was installing it) is badly coded, second theory is that it's because there are like thousands of trees on the edge of the map. If you go too far, you die instantly and go back. But I found out that if you hold W and you keep holding it while dying, you just get back up and you can continue with your journey for self-discovery. The cows are stuck in 2 seconds long animation and you can even see when they are reseting. You have some weapons, which are absolutely pointless anyway, because there is nothing to shoot with them, except the ground, which is something, I guess? If you shoot the cow, nothing happens. There are bullet decals, but they are levitating in the air, because cows have invisible square hitboxes around them. Another thing is that these guns are stock default Unity guns I had pleasure to see in another awesome piece of software known as Air Control, and trust me, I would like to be joking. There are few round collectables on the ground that can be collected that will make you move faster or will slow down a time. I remember them from Air Control as well, so I think these things are included in Unity, or maybe in its Pro version. Well, that's the first mode for you anyway, let's move to the second one.

You... do nothing there, you can move the camera around and watch model of grass moving upwards from the ground. Su randum! Also there is a sketch of corn. It's not even modelled, it's just 2D picture with two colours used. Okay, that's the grass mode. This mode has bugged menu, because when I tried to click the button to go back to Main Menu, it didn't do anything, so I had to shut it down to be able to "play" another mode. Now let's skip to it!

Cuz you know, if you have no idea what to do, put dubstep there. In this mode there is just a very small map (with fence being the border) with some lights, dubstep music playing there and the cows rotating around. Comedy gold! The terrain is glowing and sky is moving. I guess it's hardcore party. There is one hipster cow that's not part of the crowd. This cow is flying, changing the scale, etc. I thought: "Wow, developer can scale a cow model, impressive!"

I think that Range mode is supposed to be shooting mode, but to be honest, it doesn't work for me, so I guess it's broken. There is nothing happening when I load it. When I press Escape, I bug through the ceiling and fall on the ground and then... still nothing. Keys on my keyboard aren't doing anything and mouse as well, so I couldn't move and couldn't even move camera around. I guess you can use this mode as a wallpaper.

So that's Grass Simulator for you! Su funi! "But it's in Early Access!", you could say and the developer is promising another features added in the future. That's right, but look, there are good and promising games in Early Access that are only getting better and then there is this thing which obviously will never be good, because the developer is lacking developing skills and the whole idea of Grass Simulator is stupid to begin with. I would like to be proven wrong, but I don't think I will. For me, the biggest problem with this software is that skilled person would be able to make it in a day and amateur in few days with help of some YouTube tutorials. The most baffling thing is that this is being sold for actual money. It could be okay as a some learning project for developer on some website where you could play it in the web browser, but it's not okay as a product on Steam being sold for actual money. Especially for 8,99€ (10% off). I find this price absolutely ludicrous and mocking all the people who bought this for full price, because you can get Skyrim for lower price when it's on sale. Last message is for bunch of internet "comedians" making the same tired jokes in their reviews - we've already seen it milions of times, so you are not funny nor original, also you're giving it bigger score (Mostly Positive at the time of writing this review) that could mislead some people into thinking that this is actually something good.

First off i don't know if I am missing something or the plus reviews are fakes. Could go either way. I normally NEVER review a game but after running this software (was no playing and definately not a game) and reading what other people say. I loaded it up in every mode and for one I couldn't kill anything. I brought up the guns and blasted away But at point blank range it didn't hurt or even leave a mark on a cow or on the cutouts in the "Shooting Range"
I ran around and it just ended after a few minutes in teh "classic" mode, in the shooting range your stuck in a building you can't leave, And in all the other "modes" I couldn't even move. Although on pause the cows did.
If you want to load a program that has no purpose. Other than I guess you can get enjoyment out of spinning cows while it is paused. Then this is what you want. Personally i got the game for free and think i was ripped off.

I'm sure everyone will say something along the lines of grass is god, grass is life or some other stupid ♥♥♥♥ but I'm going to try and actually analyze this game and give you a real "review" of what "Grass Simulator" is. This is what I like to call a gag gift game, is it the next GOTY, no of course not. Is it odd and in some respects funny, of course. I don't recommend you purchase this game if you expect to get hours of entertainment or want anything aside from a few chuckles from time to time. This is a "game" if you can call it that, for a laugh. If you don't like seeing games like this then stop supporting them. I personally don't mind some lighthearted humour from time to time.

Do I recommend this? Not to the general audience but if you have a few bucks to blow and want to WTF from time to time, have a blast.

If you do want to see how this game is, I did a short montage showcasing what this game is about, funny moments.
