What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Congo is in the very early stages of development and does not necessarily offer the amount of content that you may expect from a full release. Please be aware, when purchasing, that this game is limited in its current state, but will be updated on a regular basis with more features and content. We're excited to get your feedback and we actively invite you to tell us your thoughts and help us develop the best possible game.

We are dedicated to creating an experience that's fun and memorable for the players, and we can only achieve that by getting it in front of you and the gaming community as early as possible. We want to mold and shape the game around what you want from it and produce a fulfilling experience.

Like many other indie teams around the world, Early Access has given us the ability to continue developing and continue producing a game despite being faced with some fundamental issues. With the support from you, we are able to continue developing Congo and making it the game it should be, and in return we can make the game exactly what you want to see and hopefully produce a really fun experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Congo is still in the early stages of development and there's still a long way to go. But with the support and feedback from you, we can hopefully get there sooner and with a better final product.

We are hoping to be out of Early Access within 12 months, depending on the feedback and support from the community.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Our Early Access version has all the soul and heart of our final product, but doesn't yet have the level of content that should be acceptable for a full release. For the full release we want to have more maps, more equipment, more weapons, more experiences and more features available to you.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Congo currently sports a base-level of equipment, weapons and a very limited number of maps. The core elements of the game are there and can be experienced. The back-end technical aspects such as the networking and player-matching are quite rough at the moment but constantly making updates and have achieved so much already - there's only more to come.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Pricing for the full version hasn't been confirmed yet, but we will be aiming at the lower end of the price scale.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“One of the most exciting things about releasing our game on Steam, is that the community is so strong and we really want to offer the players a route to tell us your thoughts and get involved. We have a forum at http://congothegame.boards.net/ where we'd love to hear your thoughts and we're always up for people getting in touch via Twitter @Congothegame and our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CongotheGame

Congo is a top-down Co-op Action horror survival game where you have to complete objectives while fending-off hordes of "demons".

Along the way you will need to gather resources such as weapons, ammunition, revive kits, compasses, maps ? and so on and so forth.
If you ignore the boxes of resources you'll quickly find yourself either dead from a severe case of lack of bullets or that you can not proceed because you forgot to pick up a pair of pliers or a canister of gas.
From my time with the game i can tell you its much more fun with friends then in single player (just make sure your friends can shoot straight...)
So, the best recipe is to gather a few mates grab a pizza and have a go at it.
The boxes containing resources are randomly generated adding a bit of replay value... so you will not know where to get X tool or Y weapon.
The "something is coming" feeling is well felt mostly because of the sound-work, the tropical white-noise plus the vegetation displacement sound effects are done very well and relay the intended message to the player.
The graphics are decent for a game of this price, delivering on what it's suppose to while being nothing special. The animations are "off" if you ask me but i hope this aspect gets some attention during the early access stage.
There are no checkpoints which i found, so if you mess-up and die you get punished for it and have to begin from the start of the mission. I detest the current hand-holding trend so this is a big plus for me.
The camera did play a few tricks on me but considering this is early access i expect this to be resolved by launch. Camera can always be tricky in these top-down games....not my favorite.
I do hope they add more levels, more objectives and a much larger variety of enemies to fight, the monkeys do get boring after a short while.

In my opinion it looks decent for a Early Access Tittle, much better then many others that come along asking much higher prices.
I did not run into any game-breaking bugs, just a slight pop-in here and a slight stutter there.
I did not play a ton of the game so take all information given here with a grain of salt and as always judge for yourselves if this tittle is worth your time and money.

So Congo... What feels like a tribute to the movie, this game goes way beyond that. The atmosphere feels great. The controls, aiming, and weaponry are all very intuitive. The way lighting plays a huge factor in the game is a really nice touch, something I have wanted to see done right in a game for over a decade. That being said, the game is still very much a work in progress and the content provided at release was minimal. I am sure there is a whole lot more to come as it appears there will be multiple maps, as indicated by the lobby screen, and that probably means a variety of objectives in the long run.

So right now, is it worth buying the Early Access for the price of 9.99? Yes. I do recommend however that you coerce at least one friend to buy it as well to play with as there is no in-game communication, of any kind, at this stage.

Congo is a promising looking early access game. It's a top-down adventure/horror co-op survival game. You (and your "friends") find yourself in the middle of a jungle at night, with bloodthirsty, gorilla looking demons, lurking and growling in the shadows. There is no health bars or anything, if you get jumped, your done ... so get a couple friends, that can resurrect you, if needed, and get the party started!
There are 3 kind of ammo you gather in the jungle and quite a few weapons to use it with - there are no names, but you can recognize your standard AK-47 , SMG, pistol and shotgun. Some weapons you can use with one hand, while holding your torch, other weapons have a flashlight on them. When you open a weapon box, the weapons kinda fly out of it, sometimes to an unreachable place, sometimes right into the hands of your friends, so be positioned and ready to snatch them fast ;) You always have your trusty machete with you from the start, in case that you prefer some hand to hand combat - it chops down demons quite effectively. There are some other goodies spread around the map as well - the revive "needle", a compass ( I have not found a map yet) to somewhat help you with orientation. The pliers and fuel canisters you need for the mission are also randomly scattered around. While carrying the canister, you're defenseless and die in one hit ( or well one "jump up" ), so co-op is highly recommended to ease the situation, as dropping the canister to pull out your weapon sometimes cannot be done fast enough!
The game uses Unreal engine, the graphics are OK, nothing special, but get the job done. The dense vegetation sometimes get in the way of your overhead camera, so using the road is always better. The lighting effects from the torch and the flashlight are reasonable.
I've only encountered one type of enemy so far - the bloodthirsty gorilla demons, that are not always the brightest, but definitely can be sneaky and keep you on your toes. The fighting / shooting mechanics / animations could be better, but it's not terrible in any stretch of the imagination, and get the job done. There is no music, and frankly I haven't noticed the need for it - the crickets in the background and the subtle growling from the demons, are atmospheric enough ;) The sounds effects are reasonable as well, nothing special and nothing to complain about.
All in all, even in this early access the game is working as expected and is an enjoyable experience (especially in co-op :p)

TL:DR you can check my solo gameplay video and get an overview of the game, (co-op videos will be coming soon™)

You have to play this game.

The surroundings and environment are set up to create a truly unique gameplay, where you as the player are fully engaged in the action. To succeed in Congo the players must communicate and work together, creating elements of teamwork first experienced in Tribes 2 and built upon in Left 4 Dead. This game has all the components of a great game, the only thing missing is you.

Having had a single and multiplayer experience, I'd have to say that Innocent Devils have managed to create a game that definitely requires team work, communication and organisation! Single player is like playing Permadeath, so it is ill advised, although MIGHT suggest room for some AI? Even one...

The enemies arrive in heavier hordes the further you progress, which means that the tension builds constantly, allowing you no room to relax, or feel comfortable even with your friends and 2 hands full of weaponry!

Some "Early Access" issues are present. I've gotten stuck in some corners where a simple jump would get me out, not that I think jumping should be implimented... and the foliage while thick and organic, can block the camera at times which is disorientating and quite stressful when you know there's a threat in the area!

Looking forward to getting more people together to trial it with 4 players, but so far, I keep wanting to go back to Congo!

This game is worth your money. I don't usually buy games before their official release but I made an exception for this one because it shows a hell of a lot of promise. One of the greatest parts of this game is the atmosphere. The jungle around you is dark but not in an annoying way, the glow from your torch that only lights the area directly around you really adds to the tension. The sound in this game is amazing. The sounds of the jungle and the howling of the gorilla demon things as they get closer to you is beautifully unnerving. Being that the game is still in early access there are a lot of things not yet added that would make it feel fully fleshed out, but for me it's definitely worht the 10 dollars. Im very excited to see this game grow.

If the huge banner on top of the title with EARLY ACCESS plastered on it didn't alert you to the fact that this game is in EARLY ACCESS, then please let me tell you that this game is EARLY ACCESS.

I did a Let's Play with two other friends which can be found here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiEsi67dvTU

Okay, SO! Considering the release for what it is, Congo shows promise. (Also I really don't recommending getting this game by yourself. Honestly, it should have 2-pack and 4-pack options (which isn't present as of this review), because playing by yourself really isn't the best option nor will it give you a good experience with the game.

The Good Stuff:
  • Unreal engine game: Visually speaking, the game doesn't look like it's in alpha
  • Isometric Survival (The angle can be a little bit too acute at times
  • Sounds effects are truly impressive. The gunshots and how those sounds travel through the jungle is great!

The Bad Stuff:

  • Buggy. I got hit when my inventory was open and could no longer access the inventory. Also I got stuck in the environment.

Definetly take a look at my video to get a better idea of what the game is like. I honestly could list more bad stuff, but I feel it's a bit premature to talk about them because they could be updated at any point.

Right now, the game is very hardcore. No maps, no guidance. These aren't bad things. If you like hardcore games, this game is technically ready right now.

Not at this point. VERY EARLY ACCESS. I'll uninstall and wait at least a few weeks until it is more polished. Good ideas though.

I'd rate it 1/10 - Nothing to see thus nothing to recommend.

ATM (5.12.2014) it is indeed a version 0.1 because just about everything in it is crap:
- camera angle: uh, man I wish the devs to look upon the world through such angle - they'd only ever see their feet
- coop fellows indication: at least put a marker over their heads or better yet their freakin names or add appearence customization cuz I for one can't tell the apart
- gunz and bullets: let's have 'em make sense, ok? dropping all the guns every time you're attacked - "great idea"
- the flags at the edges of the screen and the goals should be a bit clearer because wandering the jungle for no particular reason is no fun
- sure hope you make more maps bcuz the one there is now is just tiny and if that's all there is ppl will never buy it

All in all like I said - nothing to see here. "How to survive" is way better than this. And "Congo" devs got a load of work ahead of them to make this any good.
