What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“During the process of greenlight, I'd had some great feedback from the community and it helped me develop the game further and make changes that people wanted before they'd even had a chance to play the game. I'd love for that to continue with their hands on it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Initially it was going to be an early 2015 release but the game has scaled up significantly since launch on here thanks to everyone's feedback. I've already delivered numerous updates over the past months and so it's looking much more likely to be completed towards the end of 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will differ greatly. I'm hoping to add more buildings, more quest options, more characters and just generally improve on everything that's already had framework implemented.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is early alpha with the basic game mechanics in place. I'd like players who really want to test out and support the development get involved.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“At the moment because the game is in its early stages the price is much lower than intender and will raise in price gradually as content is developed before a final price at release. It will remain fairly priced based on the content involved and will be priced to match its value.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I'm always looking to hear back from the community and would love feedback, so much has already changed thanks to response from the community. A feature suggestion thread is available within the community forums for the game.”

RPG Tycoon Launches Next Week

I am incredibly happy to officially announce that RPG Tycoon will launch out of Early Access next week with the Version 1.0 build of the game going live on Steam at 10am on Friday 12th February for the final release price of £6.99. I'm also extremely excited to confirm that the entire soundtrack will be available and on sale alongside the game at launch for £3.99! They'll also both be bundled for anyone that wants them together for £8.99 when the game launches!

There's over 120 new features and improvements coming to the game at launch. Including heavily requested support for language modding. All of the game strings are now extracted and sitting in the /data/ folder strings.xml - I've updated the fontsheets to include all Latin-based characters, so languages such as German, French and Spanish should be supported by the game renderer for any language mods. On that topic, the game also comes with a new quest editor now so that you can write, export and share new quests without even leaving the game!As usual, I've put together a little release video that'll show off tonnes of the new improvements and features you can expect from the game.

Part Two will arrive tomorrow, so be sure to subscribe if you want to see more!

If you're a member of the Press/YouTuber/Reviewer and would like to request a Steam review code for the launch build of the game please contact Ben or Anita over at IndigoPearl.

Support The Release

If you already own the game and want to be super awesome. We're trying to make as much noise about release as possible. So please consider joining the Thunderclap (it's as simple as a couple of clicks) - it will simply send a one-time message out to your followers/friends next week linking to the store page when the game goes live. We only need 100 people to sign up for it to go live, but obviously as many people as possible will spread the word further. So if you like the game and want to support the release I'd hugely appreciate the support. Just head to https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/37286-rpg-tycoon-v1-0-launch and click support! If not, no worries!

What comes next?

Well, just because we're shipping the game doesn't mean it's fully complete, are games ever truly complete any more? If games like Age of Empires are receiving new content years after release, you can probably guess the answer to that. The plan, as it stands, is to continue supporting RPG Tycoon post-launch with extra content patches such as new quests, buildings, decorations etc. to expand the experience even further. However, since this has been a two year process of constant development and updates for me, I hope you understand that I may slow it down a little and take a breather every once in a while so updates won't be as frequent as Early Access. However, with extendible mod support, this hopefully shouldn't be a problem as it's easy to create new content and share it with other players! I'll likely add more support for modding other data in-game if this is popular.

If you're interested in extra content, patches or further games or projects in the future you can also sign up to the mailing list over on the blog to be notified of anything new if/when it happens.

Until then, thank you so much for all of your support. This has been an absolutely huge project for me and I'm immensely proud of it and everyone that's helped get the game to where it is today. I truly couldn't have done this without you all.
Thank you.

See you next week,

Hi and Happy New Year.

I'd like to welcome everyone who picked the game up during the Winter sale. This was the most successful sale I've had for the game and I really appreciate you for supporting it at this stage.

I've just published an incremental patch for the game that fixes some issues / bugs with a couple of the features added in Alpha 12. There's also a couple of balance changes and improvements too.

Patch Notes:

  • Fixed Unlock Condition for "Explorer" Achievement
  • Fixed Unlock Condition for "Supply & Demand" Achievement
  • Fixed Unlock Conditions for End Game Achievements.
  • Fixed Audio Muting
  • Heroes can no longer be forced to recover when already recovering.
  • Global Game Stats now get recorded when a game is continued, instead of exited upon Endgame.
  • Inventory Capacity now resets to 30 properly.
  • Training Buildings now process properly.
  • Fixed a loading and saving bug relating to Guild Hall
  • Fixed a Quit Game bug relating to Guild Hall
  • Fixed a null pointer error when exiting the game upon Levelling Up.
  • Added new research Options.
  • Added new research Icons.
  • Updated Help Menu to be more Helpful.
  • Added "Guardian" Hero Class
  • Added "Gadgeteer" Hero Class
  • Adjusted research timings.

As mentioned in the last update, work is full steam ahead on v1.0 now. There's a lot to do before I can say or confirm anything but you can expect some news on it towards the end of January.

As always thanks for the support,

About This Game

RPG Tycoon is a simulation game that puts you in control of a newly established RPG kingdom. Start small, with just a simple space to begin with, convince heroes to work for you then build, expand and continue to grow your kingdom as your Heroes help surrounding settlements and rid the world of the evil that it contains. It is your challenge to use all of the resources available to you to attract adventurers into your kingdom and grow its fame in order to become the greatest kingdom in the land!

Inspired by some of the classic tycoon games many of us grew up playing, RPG Tycoon aims to create a familiar yet original experience for players of all ages. Giving you the freedom to develop your kingdom how you please... You can focus on questing, aiming to hire as many heroes as you can, levelling them and training them to be the best heroes in the land by sending them on quests, forcing them to complete bounties and slay villains or you can build and grow, turning your kingdom into a tourist empire with shops and facilities milking every last bit of gold from the adventurers you're attracting... Or you can settle somewhere in between. It's up to you, it's your kingdom.

  • Start small and slowly expand your kingdom size with gold
  • Hire heroes and send them on quests to earn gold and followers
  • Rally local settlements to join you and grow your kingdom faster!
  • Gain followers and level up your Kingdom
  • Unlock new buildings, features and abilities with each level
  • Build buildings and decorations to grow your kingdom
  • Attract adventurers and earn gold from your buildings
  • Compete with other AI kingdoms in the land.
  • Choose your play duration and difficulty
  • Get scored on how you play at the end of each game.
  • Custom naming of Heroes and Buildings

The game is about 80% complete. Most of the core systems are in place and the game is playable to completion with an endgame and scoring. There is still more work to be down however, including but not limited to:

  • Improved Quest System
  • Improved Kingdom AI System - (COMPLETED)
  • Improved Adventurer AI System
  • More Heroes
  • More Adventurers
  • More Shops - (NEARLY COMPLETE)
  • More Facilities - (NEARLY COMPLETE)
  • More Research Options
  • More Epic Quests
  • More Quest Types
  • More Easter Eggs
  • Improved Building Management
  • Improve Weapons & Class Management

Since launch on early access in August, 2014 RPG Tycoon has grown exponentially (with 11 major updates so far) by using feedback from players to fix bugs, add new systems and improve existing ones. So why stop? There's still plenty more features to come to the game and each update hopes to continue using the great support and feedback from the community to finish developing this game on becoming another "classic" tycoon to add to the list.

Early Access Review
This Game is Amazing. The music is very good, the graphics are simplistic but very detailed, and the compitition bewteen the kingdoms can drive a user to go farther and try to expand and grow their kingdom. However, There are many bad things about this game as well. When I say bad, I don't mean bad, I mean that could be fixed in the future and because this is an early access game and is very orginal to say the least is a very good acomplishment by the developer. The bad things about this game is that, I feel, when a user uses the arrow keys or wasd, the movement is too slow, now I have to admit. I haven't looked in the options for a change of speed but I feel like it isn't there, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

RPG Tycoon is one of my favourite games right now and Here's why. First, It's easy to get used to. You can get straight into the game and the game will teach you how to play and after 30 minutes-1 hour you know how to run and set-up your kingdom. Second, what I like about this game is that it allows you to be very creative and you can design your own kingdom however you like, but, this comes at a cost, while you are designing your kingdom it seems that you can only build on 2 sides and can only see one way. I believe this is because the camera is at a fixed postion and cannot move 3 dimentionaly, but that only limmits your creativitiy very little. Third, the implacation of a tourniment between the kindgoms and the fact that you have to have relations with other little cities that are under your kingdom, or claimed by your kingdom is very orginal, at least I have never seen this way of doing it in other games, the closest game I can think of that does this is the Civilization series, mainly Civilization V or 5, with the city states and how you can control them, but not as much as you can in this game.

All in all I give this game a 8/10, however, this is excluding all of the bugs and code issues that I am seeing on the fourm and experencing myself, I am purely Rating on how fun the game is to me and how much enjoyment I can get from RPG Tycoon.

this game has a good concept. cant wait for it to finish.

-more tools not just the demolition tool, tools like move and whatnot
-more quests / items

game is still buggy. after you fail to protect one of your settlements you cant get them back even if you re-establish an outpost. so yeah great game please keep updating

Early Access Review
I want to give high thumbs up to the developer for putting so much time and dedication to this game. I've bought it when he first opened the early release several months ago, and I played the game for a good 5 hours this weekend. I understand the game is still being developed and how much potential it has.

I really hope they keep up the good work and improvements, which were absolutely significant in the span of a few months.

Awesome game.

I've had this game for a while, when I first got this it wasn't that great, but as time went on and it was updated more and more, it has become a much better game.
