That game can make the time you spend playing it fun and pretty interesting. That was a unique experience playing that game. I liked it, the game has a fine graphic and good gameplay, the soundtrack is cool.

Verical Drop Heroes really caught me off guard and exceeded my expectations!!!
At first let me share with you the best part of it i personally loved:It's a mix of some of the greatest and most beloved indie games out there!The platform mechanics and gameplay as well as the facial fun expressions are insired by Battleblock Theater!See for yourself ;)
So let us continue and talk about gameplay!So gameplay is really uniqua and actually a lot relaxing!You can even set attack to auto and jumt move throught the map.Pretty simple huh?You also have two special attacks one range based(bow,spear,arrows) and magic(you knew that was coming)!
The gameplay is really similar to Rogue Legacy!You can give your best shot thought the dungeons(10 levels with increased difficulty as you progress)!When you die you restart at your base where you can upgrade you health/damage etc,play trials and complete challenges!Furthermore every dungeon ends with you killing the Big Boss (or psssit you can use some keys,pick the lock and get the hell outa there! )
Last but not least as mentioned before there are 10 main dugeons,randomly generated,with a big amount of strong monsters and deadly traps waiting for you around every corner!!!

Overall impression:
Soundtrack 9/10 relaxing and tensive!
Gameplay 8.5/10 pretty fun and relaxing,but kinda repetitive after some hours.
Graphics 9/10 cartoonish
Complete score 9/10 Must have indie game for all ages and tastes!

4/5 stars. Vertical Drop Heroes HD is like Rogue Legacy "lite" a very good way.
Most of my playtime with Vertical Drop Heroes HD has been with the GOG (DRM-free + original VDH) version. So my Steam stats don't reflect my total experience with this game.

+Pick up and play accessiblity.
+Easy to learn, difficult to master.
+Fast arcadey action.
+Stages are randomly generated, assuring replay value.
+Unlocked abilities can be used with future characters, but characters can only carry 2 unlocked abilities with them at a time. This allows for very customizable gameplay, while keeping it challenging.
+Gamepad support: Xinput (360, or Logitech F series set to "X").
+Modest hardware requirements; most PCs built in the past 8 years should run VDH-HD.

-No Linux support at the time of this review. But, given VDH-HD uses OpenGL, Linux users may be able to run it via Wine.
-No Direct Input (Logitech and generic) controller support...yet.

Huh, I didn't expect Vertical Drop Heroes HD to be a rather intricate Rogue Legacy-style game where you can choose between heroes with different abilities and level stats up permanently, I thought it would be something simpler.

Don't know about the longevity yet (haven't unlocked the more difficult New Game+) but compared to Legacy I prefer the short levels with a mini-boss at the bottom instead of having to grind a while before getting somehwere. Here there's instant gratification including temporary level ups you lose after dying and permanent upgrades that are purchasable in the levels and in the hub with gold (which you only lose between runs when rerolling the heroes offered). Keys are important as well as they're used for multiple purposes like opening chests, removing obstacles, freeing computer controlled helpers or even bypassing a mini-boss with five keys. And there's more, for example short quests that get you XP, water that flows around when blocks are destroyed, the possibility to warp back to the top and lots of tombstones which e.g. spawn artifacts but also enemies when activated. Enemy variety is high, graphics are good enough for a 5-7€ game and the artstyle reminds me of Scribblenauts (in a good way).

Almost forgot another nice touch, you can play as 'pacifist' and gain more XP by picking up symbols that disappear after killing one enemy (kills by ai companions don't count). Also levels have modifiers, enemies with less HP but more damage, two bosses instead of one etc.

A few cons: No online coop, only local and LAN. Sometimes enemies spawn right into me and when the health is low can lead to an unavoidable death. Or there's a bunch cuddled together and it's impossible to fight them without losing a lot of health (but avoiding those mobs is an option most of the time, plus health gets restored when leveling up which happens frequently). Lastly the controller config needs work due to a few inconsistencies and bugs and button icons would've been appreciated. Overall the controls are fine though, very responsive.

So thumbs up from me so far, a pleasant surprise.

PS If someone cares for that kind of stuff the achievements are done right here, reasonably difficult and going for them will teach you some of the game's mechanics.

Vertical Drop Heroes HD is a fun little game, good for playing in short sessions. It's like a lite version of Rogue Legacy + Spelunky. It's a good introduction for anyone who wants to start playing roguelike-like games, because it's not so hard as others in this genre.

Highly addictive Rogue-like game, the gameplay is really fun and a lot similar to Rogue Legacy but instead of side-scrolling you slide down till you reach the bottom of the level where you fight a boss then you can proceed to the next stage.
at the start of each playthrough you have a choice between 3 randomly generated characters with different attributes, choose what best suits your type of playing and proceed, you character starts at level 1 everytime but there are upgrades you can buy before starting the game with the money you collected from your previous runs, you can even buy level ups to your character and skip stages with that money.
the game is really fun and addictive, the soundtrack is good and the graphics aren't bad at all, and like all Rogue-like games, if you like it you will end up spending tens of hours in this game and you will never regret spending your money on it.
highly recommended of course.

This was an impulse/curiosity purchase and ends up being a game I play most often...and I have a lot of games! It's fun, it is challenging, but not to the point of discouraging or losing enjoyment, and it has the feel of new-and-different on every playthrough. Levels are also varied and add to the freshness of each play. There is a load of variety in weaponry and special abilities, more special weapons and abilities you can work toward, and there is a rougue-like feel throughout. If you are thinking about getting this, it's a safe bet you'll have fun with it, and can either play for a short term or long. I've put a good amount of time into this game...I suppose I like having fun, then! All in all a very pleasant surprise.

Just to relive the nostalgia, I had to go back and play the original Vertical Drop Heroes on Kongregate. This truly does its predecessor justice, giving that fantastic risk-reward system and adding so much more to it. There are some aspects of the game that are easy to exploit (using Confusion on the Worm boss makes the fight ever-so easy, especially when I know recharges are around the corner), but even with that, the game provides a good challenge and requires you to put both your platforming skills and rogue-like decision making skills to the test. I especially like the addition of the pacifist system. Normally the choice of "To fight or not to fight" comes down to whether or not you can gain more than you lose, but in this case with many fights being winnable without much or any loss, a reward for avoiding the easy massacres is tempting and very worth it. The story itself is also simple but very befitting; so often do games tell of the great hero that overcame evil with the dozens of game-overs in between never even being acknowleged. Knowing that each failed attempt is simply another step in the story makes me even more anxious for the next attempt.

I look forward to seeing what comes out of Nerdook Productions next. Even if it's another remake of an old Flash game, I know it will be as good-- if not better than-- the original.

why I play this game

Yet another indie game that's far from bad, but doesn't quite do enough to merit the thumbs up. We need a neutral option, Valve.

Vertical Drop Heroes does do a lot right. You start off every run with a choice of three characters (you can reroll), each of whom have different weapons, traits and special abilities. The end goal of any given run is to make it to the 10th level and emerge triumphantly as the hero who succeeded, by hook or crook. If you fail - and you will - then all is not lost. Any coins and unlockables you've purchased on your journey will be available use on all future heroes, so you gradually accumulate more strength and the game gets easier accordingly. Similar to Rogue Legacy's system, albeit with far less depth.

The RPG elements actually work and are incorporated into the gameplay well; the coins that you collect on each run through the game are deposited into the grubby mitts of your hub NPCs, and the health/attack/levelling prowess of your collective mob is heightened. Before long, you'll be crushing Goblin Forest underfoot en route to greater challenges ahead. Some of the skills are very fun, and can make for some irreversibly bonkers obliterating half the map with sandworms, or teleporting the boss into lava. Similarly, you can get a randomised set of traits that either doom you from the outset or prove highly worthwhile. There are a lot of different combinations that make nearly every run unique, which is superb.

Unfortunately, while the levels are distinct from one another and are home to their own enemies and hazards, the gameplay ultimately just gets too repetitive. Combat is simplistic, essentially just involving positioning yourself in the right place at the right time and hacking away, and replaying the same first few levels (teleporter notwithstanding) does get dull. I've normally got no issue with repetitive games, but for some reason, this one just hasn't grabbed me. A bit too simple, and while quite difficult to boot, it isn't pulling me in. Too much of a grind - while I could run through the levels several times and guzzle enough potion at the hub to put Asterix to shame, I don't feel compelled to when faced with another set of characters to choose from.

That being said, I got eight hours out of it, and there's plenty on display to enjoy. With a plethora of good games on Steam these days though, it can be tough to outright recommend a game like Vertical Drop Heroes. Good price point and some novel ideas, but it just gets a bit samey. Try out the demo and see if it's your bag.

Vertical Drop Heroes works with a simple premise: get through 10 levels to the Holy Sanctuary. When you begin you can choose from one of three different heroes, each with their own weapons, abilities, and stats. Once you choose your hero you enter the Temple of Knowledge which is kind of like your starting point for your adventure. Take a few minutes to look around and talk to everyone. There’s a really good chance you’ll be back. Often. Once you’re ready head on into the portal to begin your adventure. Chances are that adventure will be really short lived.

Each stage is vertical (hence the title of the game) and the goal is to reach the end and defeat the boss, though the boss can be avoided altogether if you have enough keys. As you progress, each stage you’ll be tasked with defeating enemies, finding gold and gems, collecting keys to open chests and cages (the latter containing non-player characters that can help you out), and even completing the occasional side quest for gold and experience. You’ll also come across shrines that you can activate for various effects, such as generating enemies in exchange for gems, experience, or keys, or can even fire off weapons like fireballs and ice bolts.

All of that sounds simple enough, right? So why am I making a big deal about your adventure being short lived and that you’ll be going back to the temple often? Well, that’s where the main premise of the game comes into play. The first level isn’t incredibly difficult, which is fine as it eases you into the game. The next level though starts to see a bit of an increase in difficulty to the point that unless you defeated every possible enemy in level one, you stand a good chance of dying, which means you have to start all over. Almost. After you die you go back to the character select screen with three more randomly generated characters to choose from, but now you’ll notice something different. First off you’ll notice that all of your gold remains intact, minus five gold for having to reroll new characters (there has to be a penalty somewhere). Second, during each stage you might come across someone who will give you new abilities for future heroes in exchange for gold. Each character has two ability slots and these will be filled with the abilities you purchase.

You can also talk to a couple of people in the Temple of Knowledge and pay them gold to increase various stats for all new heroes. These include paying a blacksmith to increase the starting damage for all new heroes as well as visiting an apothecary to increase starting HP for all new heroes. You can also talk to someone to make XP orbs appear in a stage as long as you don’t defeat any enemies. As soon as you defeat an enemy though the orbs all disappear. All of these are a good idea to invest gold into as it helps level your heroes a bit faster.

Okay, so you’ve died several times, bought some new abilities, increased your starting damage and hit points and are ready to set out again. Now the game begins to get fun as you’ll notice that you can take out enemies a lot quicker and easier than before. With your newfound abilities and skills you can now progress further along the way to the Holy Sanctuary. However, things will keep getting tougher as you progress, but starting in level two a new shrine makes itself available: the ability to teleport directly to a level. This can be both a good thing and a bad thing. The good thing is that it allows you to skip previously cleared levels. The bad thing is that not only does it cost a lot of gold to activate (though to use it in the temple is incredibly cheap at first), you don’t retain the exact experience level you had when you activated it. For example, when I first activated the level eight teleportation shrine I was around experience level 32. When I died and decided to skip right back to level eight I actually started at experience level 22. I’m not exactly sure of how the game determines what experience level you start with, but it does put you at a disadvantage.

The graphics are nice, the music fits the atmosphere of the stages, and the progression of the game with the new abilities was really enjoyable. There are a couple small things that bothered me though, but I didn’t feel like they were enough to warrant several paragraphs explaining them. First is that once you gain a lot of abilities, the final stage (the sanctuary itself) is rather simple to finish. There’s an ability called Ice Age which pelts the area in giant ice balls and freezes everything they hit for a few moments. You get four uses of that per level, but it pretty much makes the final stage a non-issue.

The other thing that sometimes gets to me is that while you’re gaining new abilities and increasing the starting stats for new heroes each time you die, get used to the first couple of stages as you’ll be seeing them a lot. The attacking can definitely seem a bit annoying, mainly because while you can swing your weapon you can also just walk up to them and hit them, similar to the arcade game Gauntlet. That’s actually a more reliable way to hit an enemy using melee weapons because it just felt like the weapon wouldn’t hit an enemy’s hit box when manually swinging with it. This led to me dying a lot in the first couple of stages while I got my stats up. For a while I was really getting tired of them.

In the end though, Vertical Drop Heroes is a really solid game. It’s one of those games that’s challenging at first, but as you keep dying you get opportunities to better your chances for the next try. The final area was kind of surprising and unexpected, though again it can be a little on the easy side with the right abilities. There’s also some replayability as once you clear the main game you can unlock new game+ which is an endless game where you shoot for a high score. You can also play with a friend either split screen or over a local network. It works the same way, except experience shrines (where you summon enemies and gain experience for it) only give experience to whoever activated it, and once you die you have to wait for your friend to either die or complete the level (in other words, when you die you’re done for that level). On the whole this is a pretty fun game. If you’re looking for something simple, definitely give it a go.
