What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The primary concept and gameplay mechanics of The Tower are, although intially popular, still very open to producing alienation in some players who are not fully open to the unique experience The Tower offers. Allowing users to gain access to The Tower via this manner, we can develop standard mechanics that casual and hardcore gamers alike can enjoy and relate to. It is with their feedback that we can make The Tower not only the greatest it can be, be we can serve the largest percentile of players possible.”

How long will this game be in Early Access?

“At this current stage of development, we estimate a six month Early Access window as new features such as VR are implemented and we rework the existing build of The Tower, from scratch, to provide a more streamlined and cinematic, polished experience.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Through early player feedback, we hope to refine, polish and even create new features that they will enjoy. The Early Access version is, we believe, the perfect introduction to our world and makes available the room to suggest features from these dedicated players.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Tower's early Alpha build is stable, cinematic and comprised of four early instalments. It wraps up nicely and gives a good grounding of the mechanics and game concept.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. We believe £13.99 is the best price for the final retail version, and £5.99 for the Early Access version. These are the standard prices before discounts.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We have supplied Alpha keys and builds in the past through Desura, as well as involve them with Skype conversations and unique opportunities, like in-game dialogue for guards and other NPCs. This is something we'd like to continue into the future and actually pull back the veil even more and take on-board totally honest suggestions and critique.”

The Tower 2015 Edition: Pre-Alpha Access

July 9th, 2014

Hello everybody,

In a few days time, we'll be putting up special access to the pre-alpha version of The Tower: 2015 Edition, which will be available from Steam for the low, low price of £0.99.

We've come to realise that if we engage players now, even at this very early stage in development, we hope to acquire valuable feedback and pretty much work it in a.s.a.p. This is a build that will constantly update. Some of it might not even be playable, some of it may only be in-game cutscenes or dialogue, but we hope you can start to see the differences immediately.

Here's a short FAQ for what to expect:

q) The pre-alpha is cheap. Why?
a) The pre-alpha at this stage, is exactly that. Experimental and unfinished. You can help us shape it's future by seeing what we're doing and giving feedback. It all helps!

q) If I buy the pre-alpha, will I receive the final version for free?
a) No. The pre-alpha will only contain content up until Beta. After that, the game will be considered 'shaped' and all further development will be locked until release.

q) What can I expect as the pre-alpha develops?
a) Story chapters to finalise, first-look gameplay and your name in the credits if you choose to help!

The pre-alpha will be live in a few days, so stay tuned!

***UPDATE: Scratch that. We've decided to generate 50 Alpha Keys to give away for FREE, to those who request them below. Fifty people is far easier to manage and communicate with! Once you have your key, you can access the 'Beta' tab, by right clicking on The Tower in your Steam library and opting in via the drop down box.

“I have only played the beginning so far but the moment I passed through the darkness I really felt that this was genius... I have surround sound headphones and it took a while to adjust but then I heard the water and decided to head towards the noise. I could sense the distancing and the placing of the water through my headphones and I walked towards it and splashed the water... I was amazed when I heard a faint sound of air and follwed that toi the next area. I havew never played a game that requires senses and I instantly want more. I congratulate you. However are you going to put a price on it? And I have a good computer but it stills lags? However amazing game and so far have been fascinated. I don't give 10s ever but after seeing well hearing this and that it actually worked and I had to rely on senses I was astounded. I was tempted to give 9 since I donnt know what is up ahead but I thought the genius behind it all was magnificient?!”

“Brilliant game and an absolutely genius game concept! I was sceptic at first, a total darkness sound guided game, but they made it work perfectly =3”

“A refreshingly novel approach to interactive sensory entertainment with well-done storytelling to keep it enthralling. Lots of potential.”

The voice acting and audio are stellar!

So far, it is quite neat - just needs some more tweaks. I managed to get to a flashback describing how I got into the dungeon in the first place. There were tasks to complete. Although I knew how and saw the tools, etc. I couldn't complete them because I kept getting stuck just moving around outside.

It actually took me a good five minutes to get off the front stoop. I will play again the next time there is an update because the idea and story are very good. The implementation just needs some work. Aside from getting stuck on invisible objects or perhaps bounding boxes that are too large, I had trouble knowing if I had hit a wall or not. I'd be able to feel it, wandering through the dark, maybe an icon would be nice or perhaps a meaty thud?

Okay, this game has AMAZING potential and it is quite nice. However it is in Early Access Alpha so there are a lot of problems with it. Minus the bugs and the glitches, I am having quite some fun with this game.

. Audio in the game is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, the sounds of water trickling from the top of the cave or the sound of stabbing a guard in the head... Amazing.
. Lack of sight makes you traverse the pitch black caverns entirely by sound, which is very fun and interesting.
. Very intriguing storyline right off the bat, instantly had me drawn in.
. Voice acting is pretty good.

. A LOT of bugs and glitches. (As to be expected in a early access alpha.)
. While the voice acting is pretty good, there needs to be more emotion in the voices.
. Some of the script needs modifying, at times I just sat there thinking "That sounds quite odd."
. Worst bug I have encountered is MANY invisible barriers in the flashback of your farm, there are a lot of invisible barriers that restrict you from entering the tool shed and other areas of your farm. This makes it unplayable for me.

All in all, with all the bugs and other issues of the game, for $5 you really can't go wrong. They have done quite well with this game so far and I am so eager to see more of it (after they fix the bugs that is)

This game is nothing but story at the moment. That's fine though because it does it very well. The first bit here is a bit dated which is good to keep in mind when judging how good it conveys the story. I would definitely play the rest of it and you should get it for the early access price at some point. I have a video of my playthrough here if you want to see what you actually get with the early access purchase.

Okay. First off, I'd like to thank the team for building and continually adding to this game. It is much appreciated, from Developer to another.

Whilst I didn't play a very long time from time constraints, I would like to point out, that the only "creepy" moments I had was the first hallway (because jumping into the unknown is scary) and every time after that, just the initial creepy effect of going from a lit room to a non-lit room.

But being in complete darkness with limited sound fx, no music/score, and I'm sure I hit every wall in the dark room at least 6 times, was not fun. I was not creeped out, it had no atmosphere to give a creeped out feeling, and it didn't feel like a "darkness of The Tower" so much as "The Annoying Bumping Into Walls and Pools of Water Tower".

Now, I know, the whole relative point is to run around until you find the torches, which are your save locations. Might I ask, make the ESC key to bring up a menu to quit the game? I just had to quit now to go, and I had to tab out to hurriedly quit. Sure, I lost all the time I bumped around in the annoying darkness, but it's not like I'll miss it anytime soon.

Beautiful graphics
Runs smooth
Great FPS
The torches are not cheaply made
Unity was a good choice

The heat simmer from the torches is a little much. It might look like that if a jet fueled engine were next to it: sure
Bumping around in the dark... I guess its the point of the game
No Score/Music during the running around to give off a feeling of space and atmosphere

The Pros outway the Cons in The Tower, and so, I will recommend this game.
