About This Game

Detective Case and Clown Bot in: Murder in the Hotel Lisbon

Murder in the Hotel Lisbon is a videogame inspired by the classic point and click adventures from the 80’s and 90’s. It adopts these eras distinctive design and it is built using only the pixel art technique. The game itself runs at a native resolution of 256x192, the same resolution used by the old ZX Spectrum 48k and most recently by the Nintendo DS.

Synopsis:
A strange murder has occurred in the Hotel Lisbon, a man committed suicide with 14 stabs to the back while at the same time he peacefully drank his coffee.
This case with contradictory facts was too complex for Policeman Garcia to solve, so he decided to hire the only detective duo in town capable of solving it: the mythical Detective Case and the unmistakable Clown Bot.
Together, they will solve a network of love relations so complex and so intricate, that it would take at least 14 clairvoyants, 5 apocalyptic sect prophets who can predict the end of the world and 3 of those gypsies that can read the palm of your hand just to guess the final outcome.

Characters:
With the mythical Detective Case, also known as the world worst detective, a man so rough and rude that his witnesses would rather be run over by a slow moving freight train than to be questioned by him.
And the hilarious Clown Bot who, although he works as a Detective Case’s sidekick, he hopes in reality that one day he will get a job as a circus clown. Unfortunately, and no matter how many applications he sends, no circus will ever accept a clown that is afraid of children. He never sleeps, so besides working by day as a sidekick, he also works by night as a stand-up comedian in a local bar. People say that he is a joke machine.

Original soundtrack

Murder in the Hotel Lisbon may be low res and retro on the visual side, but we made sure that on the audio side your ears would rejoice with a complete original soundtrack. Composed of an orchestral band, a jazz band and a typical Portuguese Fado trio, the musical landscape contrasts beautifully with the colorful graphics.

Game music
Throughout the game you will ear over 20 different tracks of orchestral music composed and recorded specifically for the game.
All these tracks were recorded on studio with a 10 member band composed of friends and colleagues. All of them brought their soul and heart to these recordings and the results are absolutely AWESOME!

Jazz music
Inside the GAF Bar, a 4 man band plays some cool Jazz.
The character at the Piano is actually Filipe Melo who is doing a cameo and allowed us the rights to use some songs recorded previously with John Ellis, Romeu Tristão and João Pereira! BAM!

Fado music
To top it all, inside the Noitadas Restaurante we have a Portuguese Fado trio ready to entertain the guests. The song they sing was also recorded on studio. It is called "A Caldeirada" and it was originally written for famous Fado singer Amália Rodrigues.
SUAVE!

I really enjoyed this game. It was really fun and simple to play.
I liked the humour - which admitedly wouldn't appeal to everyone - but I loved the mixture of cute-ish pixelated graphics and more mature content. I also loved the silly vibe of Case and Clown Bot, as well as their constant bickering.

The only negative thing I have to say about it is that there were a few spelling/grammar mistakes in the English version.

The overall old-school style of the game is very nice and even appreciable, even though there are more than one very annoying pixel hunting puzzles. And a bug that may prevent finishing the game.

That said, I indeed did lost the interest to finishing the game.

For the loss of some odd cents for the price of it, it really doesn't matter.

Not worth the short time, not worth the few cents, not even worth writing this.

I haven't played a lot of point and click games but I liked this one.

All the 4th wall jokes are entertaining.

It took me around 8 hours to do pretty much everything you can do in game. I saw every location, solved every case, and had a lot of fun doing it!

The gameplay isn't that deep, but it isn't that shallow either. It's just enough to make it fun and entertaining. You get a clue and that leads you to another clue, and that clue leads to someone, and then you have to interrogate that person. I had a lot of fun with interrogations, even if they were quick.

The pixelated art style is really interesting, and what the developers did with it is incredible. Even with the minimalistic pixel style, they managed to recreate the feeling and look of Lisbon!

The soundtrack sounds really really good, with that typical portuguese sound.

I recommend this game to any fan of point & click and/or mystery games.

Review:

Back in the old days of my youth, and DOS 5.1, I was rather a fan of Sierra games. One of the original point and click adventure companies, they made their bread and butter in the early years over series like King’s Quest and Leisure Suit Larry. I would spend hours playing King’s Quest 5 or Conquests of the Longbow, hunting and clicking, talking with random people, and trying to find that one clickable person that would move my adventure on. I ate up that stuff, primarily because as a youth, I felt the writing was brilliant. It should come as no surprise then that I am still fond of these sorts of games, though honestly I play fewer now that I have less time to devote to games. Therefore I was somewhat pleased when another point and click adventure game came up on the randomizer. After playing for around 45 minutes, though, I remember why I stopped playing these sorts of games; the return on investment in terms of time is rather low.

Now, this is not really a criticism of the game. Indeed, behind the very clunky pixelated graphics and overly simple point and click interface lies the makings of a great game. The humor is varied and entertaining enough to keep me interested, and the underlying murder mystery seems just interesting enough to be worth seeing through. Even the addition of a sort of interview mechanic was interesting to me. Unfortunately, after playing through as long as I did, I barely felt like I moved the story along. This inevitably is the folly of gaming as you age: when you are young, you can waste away the hours playing games without consequence, however the older gamers must balance their gameplay time with work schedules, relationships, and other such real life things. I find myself wanting for more before realizing that if I dont get to bed there is no way Im going to be able to drive eight hours tomorrow, and that sucks, because it means that I am old. Enough about me though. I love this game, it's cute, if not entirely put together, and everything about it makes me want to invest far more time than I have into it. Hopefully you’ll find the same.

Game’s Fate: Uninstalled. It's not that I’m not interested, I just have too many point and click adventure games I want to get to first. Maybe later, when I have the time to spend on games as opposed to writing reviews about them
Buy/No Buy: Buy, especially now, but even after the sale ends, if you enjoy point and click adventure games.

Boring! I enjoy point and click games and I really wanted to enjoy this game; however, it was just so bad. The story is a bore. The writing is not funny at all. I was speeding through the dialogue just to get this game over with. The laugh track in the background (going off way to much) is annoying. Personally, I give this a 3 out of 10. I give the creators points for the attempt and points for the music; however, the game is stale.

Recommending for the portuguese, but maybe you should avoid it if you're not able to play this in Portuguese.

I had a blast, really. All the references and resemblences of my city in a pixelated art style is just amazing to see. A lot of the portuguese culture is shown in this game, and that's why I loved it so much. Even the tiniest things may be referenced, and that's what makes this a huge gem to have on anyone who loves and/or lives in Portugal. The game itself was fun too, the case was entertaining, not very confusing, but kept me going and going until I was actually done with it. I completed the game in one sitting, for about 4 hours.

The soundtrack is AMAZING, the jazzy sound had me hooked, and there's even a Fado song, one of our own genres of music!

I believe that the humour may be completely different for each language because there's a lot of puns in the version I played, so those are pretty hard to translate, if not impossible, hence why some foreigners feel like it fails at humour, but that's because you're not experiencing the best version of it, sadly the only way to play the best version is if foreigners learned Portuguese!

All in all, again I do say, a must-have gem for Portuguese speakers, sadly I don't think people "from the outside" will appreciate it as much as we do! 8/10

The art style is fantastic. It really is, and it is such a shame about the rest of the game.

The music is good, but just not very good at being video game music. It gets repetitious very fast. I find it hard to believe that they could have played the game with audio turned on and thought it sounded fine.

But the thing that completely kills it for me is the writing. It's painful. English isn't their first language and it shows in every way it can. Either I don't get their sense of humor or they don't really have one. This is one actual conversation:

Case: I still haven't been paid yet
Secretary: Ok sign here and here
Case: HAHAHAHA
Clown-Bot: Beep Boop

* Cue laugh track *

... Wait what? Is this supposed to be funny? Some sort of anti-humor about misplaced laugh tracks? Is them being poor supposed to be some sort of running joke? Many other "jokes" are built out of casual disrespect towards each other or women in general and this is supposed to somehow be funny? It actually stoops so low to as to try to be self aware about how unfunny it is as if that is supposed to make it acceptable. When you reach that point you have failed.

Even this "humor" aside, the rest of the plot is entirely composed of the most generic low effort tropes. It's clear that nobody there cared about writing, which makes it baffling then why they made an adventure game.

Not to mention the poor implementation of conversations in this game. The writing can best be described as verbose word vomit. And so naturally the only thing you could do to make this worse is to get stuck in 30+ long unskippable dialogue line conversations that are the same each time because you accidentally clicked on the same thing twice.

I couldn't even power through it knowing it was likely pretty short.

Likes:
→ Interest Plot
→ Interesting Characters
→ Hilarious Dialogues
→ Horrible Jokes
Items are hidden quite well in some areas
Dislikes:
→ No window mode.
→ When alt-tabbed out of the game, it sometimes glitches, though it's not too bad as it returns to normal, usually.
→ Going from one location to another can be a pain in the neck in my opinion. The taxi option is available so that got rid of the problem, though I wish moving around to another location would have been a bit more simplier.

Other than these dislikes, I would recommend the game as I enjoyed it to the full extent.

Though quite easy to beat and not really a big challenge, i can say that I agree that the nostalgic part is very present and just for that it was worth it already. I don't know how is it working in the english version but I've been living abroad for a bit and I can say that all this portuguese jargon and humour (accent play such as mocking english words like "sidequest") really put me in a happy spirit. I also enjoyed the characters aknowledgement (and confusion) that it is a game after all and there are "game things" happening.

I would say: play it for the fun of it, but don't expect hard riddles or anything like that :)

A Classic Comedy
A light, fun, comedy, suspense game which gets you hooked till the very end.
It took me a mere 6 hours to complete the story mode which is full of stupid yet funny jokes and unexpected plot-twists. There are also a couple sidequests waiting to be unlocked during specific times in the game. However, after finishing the story, you also get a 'Stand Up Clown' mode where you play as the Clown Bot and are given an audience to entertain.
The 8-bit graphics can also trigger plenty of nostalgia which increases the urge to play this tiny gem even more. All in all, given the price, it's a sureshot YES to the game.

I loved this game!! I loved the sense of humor, the art, the soundtrack. I am so surprised that more people don't know about this game. The ONLY thing I could possibly mention as being a negative to some (personally I thought it was endearing) was the handful of spelling/punctuation/grammatical errors. But in this game's defense, it was not originally in english, and the sheer volume of text in this game is enough of an excuse imo.

I bought this on sale but I think the experience was worth much more than what I paid for it. Nice job (:

This game is entertaining and easy to navigate. Graphics are decent, story is okay. You talk to people, collect items, then do interrogations where you ask the right question along with the right items. It's not hard to get through because there are no puzzles (you just need to collect items for interrogations and speak to the right people to progress). It gets a little tricky towards the end but with a little trial and error I figured things out.

A fun point-and-click style adventure game, following a detective and his robot in a southern european town. Lots of humour, both meta-jokes and related to the case at hand. The game plays very well, with some neat low-resolution graphics and nice "interrogation" minigames. There are a few minor translation errors, but other than that this is a very good game.

Para os meus amigos Tugas, o melhor jogo do universo!

This game is a masterpiece. It's a perfect example of what an Indie game should be.
Made with a short budget (Its Indie, dah), this game isn't focused in showing great realistic graphics, nor revolutionizing the Point & Click genre with innovative gameplay, but using a fantastic and different humour, with a scent of its own. Its the best, but also the riskiest feature of the game. Why? Made in Portugal, this game lives from its portuguese and humor jokes, from the beginning through the end, and was designed to be that way, and some people (non-portuguese) may not understand them all, although the creators changed those jokes in the english version.
The story takes action in Portugal, in a fictional place totally inspired by Lisbon and Porto, so, if you never went there, here's a perfect way to visit it... In a cartoonish and pixeled way!

If you like Point & Click games, specially humurous P&C like Monkey island, here's a game you can't miss!

9/10

Murder in the Hotel Lisbon, at the first sight, it's just another point&click game. But for Portuguese people it's a landmark in our national gaming industry. Being one of the first Portuguese games on Steam, this one is more special because it portrayts many Portuguese stereotypes and gives a general satyrical view on late 80s/early 90s Lisbon. You play as José Justino (more commonly called Zé, Case in the English translation), a private investigator that gets a robot as part of the heritage form a recently pasted-away relative. This robot, which Zé decides to call "Clown" because of the bad jokes he's always saying, form a dysfunctional pair that will try to solve the huge mystery that surrounds the strange murder of a guy in his room in Hotel Lisbon. The gameplay is the usual in this type of game, and has a few bugs. The artwork and the sound are rather good, and are, in my opinion, one of the biggest assets of this game. The story is not bad at all, it has a fairly good plot-twist and it only sins for being too short. However, there are 3 sidequests that are honestly interesting and a stand-up comedy show, that has some good jokes (but some very bad ones) and that is a bit of a problem due to the great ammount of bugs it presents. Now, where the game really shines: the dialogues. Filled with little jokes, references and details that only the Portuguese people can get, this is a tribute to our tricky language and to our exquisite culture and way of living. Many of these elements were probably lost in the English translation, so I think it's undeniable that whoever plays this in English will not have a complete experience. Therefore, I believe that this game deserves two different scores: for the Portuguese version I'll give it a score of 86 out of 100. A must play game that hasn't a higher grade because of the bugs and the fact that it's a quick game (3 to 4 hours with everything done). For the English version, the score should be quite a bit lower. I haven't played the English version, but I bet it would be something around the 70s out of 100. Concluding: if you're Portuguese, this is mandatory. If you aren't, well, it doesn't hurt to give it a try, but don't expect a extraordinary game.

Murder in the Hotel Lisbon is a point-and-click adventure that will bring you back to the days of Sam an Max: Hit the Road! With a pixelated artstyle, slightly mature dialogue and humor, and unique world to explore, this game is great for fans of the genre. There are a few issues playing through that you may pick up on, such as a notable amount of typos and a good bit of crashing. In the game you'll be finding clues to a murder and then using them to interrogate different citizens. While this idea is unique, it's one of the only few mechanics that you could regard as "new" in this game. Overall, Murder in the Hotel Lisbon is a nice game if you're willing to look around some rough edges.

I think a lot of this game was lost in translation. At the very least, it was hurt by it. There are so many typos. So many. The pacing is slow. Moving around in the game is clunky, and there is so much back and forth, since there are very few actual locations in the game. Six hours, including the mini-game, across 5 streets with only a building or two apiece on average. It's just way too much repetition.

Plus, the game forces a linear progression in some respects, but allows you to do other things out of order, in the most obnoxious way. For instance, the first time I called Stephanie to my office, I went to meet her, only to have her repeat the same line over and over again about how she got there so quick, not knowing that the game expected me to have another item before I interrogated her. Why did I call her to my office if I didn't have everything I needed? Other times, the game insisted that I had all the evidence needed to interrogate someone, but it wasn't clear from the story or the interrogation questions which items those were. And the interrogation questions themselves are poorly written, or at least, poorly translated. Many times several of the questions say exactly the same thing with little discernible change in tone, leaving you to guess which one is the "right" choice. Plus, coming from a history of games that let you develop your character through dialog, I found it annoying that the dialog options that I found more amusing and entertaining were "wrong" and caused you to fail the interrogation. I mean, not that I didn't know not to select them, but it was annoying to not be able to.

The artwork was... okay. As far as pixel art game go, I've certainly seen better. But I've seen worse.

I think the thing that annoyed me the most was that the taxi would drive through buildings to pick you up. And not in a forgivable, cartoony, over-the-top way. Just a normal taxi driving through normal walls.

One of the other annoyances is where the game fails to respond to mouse clicks, because you're either too close to something, or too far away, or seemingly at random. It's a point and click. If I click, the character moves. That's how it's supposed to work. If the game doesn't respond at all, then it's failing at the only thing it had to get right.

The humor didn't impress me in the beginning, and then it wore me down until I enjoyed it, and then it got so repetitive that I lost interest again.

And then there was the ♥♥♥♥-shaming. And potshots at crossdressers.

Don't get me wrong. If you give me a misogynistic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like Jayne Cobb, I will totally believe him as a character. I will hate him and love him for all of the right reasons. But if you give me a one-dimensional female character, and then have all the major male characters, including both of the main protagonists, call her a ♥♥♥♥ over and over again, it's no longer about what that character is like and what his flaws are. He isn't the misogynistic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, the developers are.

Not to mention the developers begging for money INSIDE of a game that I PAID for. ♥♥♥♥ you.

Detective Case and Clown Bot In: Murder in the Hotel Lisbon is a point and click adventure game. The game is quite colourful and nicely animated, but there's not much to do here. It's fairly linear where you head to one location, pick up an item and go to the next. While not a bad game, it definitely needs more polishing. Interviewing characters was similar to presenting items in Phoenix Wright. Solving the murder mystery felt unrewarding and unsatisfying. All you learn is who did it, but not how or why. Heavily suffered from typos and poor translation which led to a poor storyline experience.

Pros:

Cons:
Humour fell flat
Translation errors
Devs begging for money as an achievement
