What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Frozen State is still very early in development. Despite this fact, many core features are already in place and the game is playable as it is, though it’s still evolving and improving. It means many things can change over the course of development. For that reason, we would like to take you with us on this journey and make those changes and improvements based in part on your feedback.”

How long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have a certain number of features and content we want to implement, but because we also would like to have deep involvement from the community, it is hard at the moment to set any definite deadlines or time frames. However, we plan to release regular, fortnightly updates.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version will have a considerably larger world to explore, more content, NPCs and quests.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is a pure sandbox experience, it doesn't have any goals or objectives, except surviving as long as you can. The game has 12 locations, covering just over one square kilometre combined. Dynamic weather, randomly generated interiors, crafting and stealth elements are already included.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will be gradually growing over time as we reach important milestones. The fully completed game will cost around 20$. We don't plan any price discounts or bundle sales until the game is finished.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We'd like to have deep involvement by the community in the development of Frozen State. If you have interesting ideas or suggestions, please share them with us on the Frozen State Forum.”

Dev Update 18/07/14

July 18th, 2014

Hi everyone,

These two weeks were very exciting for us, we’ve been working hard and I’m glad to announce the we almost finished our first big update.

As I wrote before, we want to make the survival element fairer and slightly less dependent from random odds. We began to work on the features that would allow you to plan your survival strategy not only on scavenging, but also on gathering sustainable resources like wood, fish, and small, uninfected animals.

The first feature we made is building. Now you can chop certain trees to get building materials.

In the video below, I’m showing how it works.

I apologise in advance for the bad sound quality. I was making this video far away from home, using a built-in microphone of my laptop.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLeb3B5dhdI

Because this feature isn’t that simple and requires additional testing, we decided to postpone a new update until the next week. It also will let me finish some structures that I’m working on right now .
Two types of fences (big and small), torch and wooden chest.

(WIP)

Thank you,

Devs

Inventory Revamp

July 11th, 2014

Hello there,

Since Frozen State went live on Steam, we've gotten tons of feedback, suggestions, ideas and plenty of bug reports. Some of the bugs will get fixed in the upcoming update.

Many of view have complained about the Inventory. That is hard to manage the items, hard to find certain items and it's too frustrating . Apparently, the list-like inventory with text doesn't work quite well.

I sat down and drew a new version, where the text was replaced by icons. I also made the slots for "equippable" items look more like sockets.

However, this is just a mock-up. Implementing these changes in the game will take us a couple of weeks maybe more, also I would have to redesign some other windows to replace the old lists of items.

That's why before we begin, I'd like to know your opinion. So feel free to post your thoughts

I opened a thread on the forum as well

The experimental city has been infested by an extraterrestrial parasite that has obliterated the native population. Once infected, the parasite causes its victims to become vicious alien hybrids…

*Early Alpha Review*

Frozen State - Released in early Alpha today 7/1/14 I believe this game has a lot of potential and I am excited to see where the dev team will take it. My first playthrough I survived roughly 70 minutes. A brief tutorial gets you going with the basics and throughout my playthrough I found myself bringing up the Manual to check things such as crafting and whatnot. GAMEPLAY: In Frozen State's current 'state' do NOT expect a run and gun zombie killing game. I found it to be much more of a survival of the elements and finding safe places to sleep, cook food and stay warm. Most of my time was spent going from house to house looking through cupboards and bedrooms for useful items to either drink, eat or cook with. Building fires is absolutely necessary to stay alive along with finding safe places to sleep. As if surviving the subarctic tempurature isn't difficult enough, there are zombie-like creatures scattered thoughout the game. You start with a Nagant 7.62R pistol and an axe, the enemies (two varients that I have found so far) are not the most difficult to kill but I found myself avoiding them like the plague just because I was dying a slow death trying to stay alive without dealing with them. AUDIO/VIDEO: Both could use a little bit of work. I don't need my games, personally, to be the shiniest thing int he world but the visuals could maybe use some work. Noticed some animations were missing and some, like the flashlight I found, were really impressive adding to the overall atmosphere. Audio was OK, nothing to write home about at this point.

In the end, I was freezing to death, getting hungry and becoming dehydrated. I was out at night during a snowstorm searching for safe shelter where I could build a fire and sleep. I stumbled across a huge building, I think it was a school, went it and went upstairs looking for either a bed or bathtub. I could hear creatures walking around and it was almost pitch black in the building so I had to move by flashlight and focus in on sounds. (You can hold "C" to focus on noises, I thought this was a really cool feature adding to the survival-horror feel) Was killed by a creature that walked on four legs, reminded me of the 'Licker' from a Resident Evil game.

All in all, I really think this is what survival horror is about. Excellent dark, gritty and isolated-survival aspects. Needs a lot of work but so far so good. They have a lot of content planned and I can only see good things for Frozen State. Worth the $10? Yeah, help the dev team out with your feedback and I believe we will all be well rewarded in the end. Enjoy!

*Edit: " I stumbled across a huge building, I think it was a school..." Literally. I found a few bottles of Port Wine and was #$%*ing wasted.

For those of you that want a video First Impressions, here you go :-

Pleasently surprised by this game. While the survival genre isn't exactly new (and let's face it, survival as a genre is very over-saturated these days) this game brings a rather unique twist with it being based very cold temperatures that make exploration need very careful planning, as one wrong decision can cost you dearly, either from freezing to death or the alien hybrids that have nothing better to do than to make your life a misery.

Interiors of buildings are randomly generated which in turn mean that items are also randomly generated. Your starting gear is also randomly generated to an extent too, which is rather nice as it brings a fair bit of variety. A decent example is that the first time I played I got a nice revolver with plenty of ammo. The second time round I didn't get a revolver and the third time I got a revolver but had the wrong ammo type.

The hybrids hurt, It is advised to try and avoid combat if possible (however you could go in guns/axes ablazing, just don't expect to be in one piece after though :p). You can sneak by crouching or walking to reduce noise you make, as far as I can tell it seems to work well enough.

While the controls can get a bit of getting used to, they work fairly well. Line of Sight is implemented very well in this game where you have a cone of sight that is movable with the mouse.

Really enjoying it so far, although I haven't put in as much time as I would like. Would love to see more crafting options, randomly generated maps (as well as interiors) and more functionality. I will be following the game to see how the devs expand the game.

[TIME OF REVIEW] [05/07/2014] [EARLY ACCESS BUILD 9]

Frozen State is one of the most interesting games I have seen in a while and after an hour of play I am ready to give out a review but first let me tell you some of my experiences in this game.

Day 1...

It's cold and i'm out of paper, I need to go out and find some if I am to make a campfire to survive.

I was attacked by some sort of infected known as a gaunt, It took a good hit on me but I am ok...I think.

It's getting dark and cold but I still have no paper I guess my only choice is to press on and hope for the best.

After searching around I found a run down house and saw something walk past the shattered window, I raised my gun and readied myself and slowly stepped towards the house. Before I got through the door I saw the horrific monster walking towards me, I fired a few bullets but I have had little experience shooting a gun so I missed 2/3 shots. I put it away and raised my axe and lunged at it taking a few good swipes at it knocking it down killing it. Once I had caught my breath I slowly walked into the same building when something more horrifc crawled across the ground at furious speed. I ran back terrified taking more shots but missing, I did as before and raised my axe slashing at it killing it. I'm not sure what it is but I really didn't want to know. I pressed on still looking for the paper I needed...

I found a supermarket but inside I found no paper although on my way out around the back something huge chased me, i'm not sure what it was but I ran and managed to escape.

Thankfully I was struck with the best of luck, a building full of apartments. I ran inside checking every drawer and cupboard but nothing until I checked an oven...And there it was, the one thing I had spent my journey looking for...Paper...I swiftly crafted myself a fire and crouched next to it, feeling the warmth as it brushed my skin...I am now in that appartment hoping that by morning I will still be alive...

I have decided to leave the room I was in, in search of more supplies. After a few minutes of searching I hear a loud crash as a wooden door breaks down, I stop dead in my tracks swiftly checking my surroundings...Suddenly a monster crawls along the ground towards me, I raise my axe once again and give it a few slashes but it keeps coming I try to give it another but a Gaunt begins his approach so I back into a small bathroom and whip out my pistol and fire an entire magazine at them...They are dead...I am now cold and dying...I rush around looking for the fire I left on so I could know where I was. I enter a room and see the thing I saw at the supermarket, it turns and begins its chase. I turn and run now looking for the exit. I run into a room hoping to find stairs but all I find is another exact same monster. I turn and run but he is right behind me. I manage to duke him out and continue my escape. Quickly I close a door to block them and run into another room...Empty...I turn back and see them already coming towards me, I try to doge him but to no avail, with one foul swoop he slices my neck cutting it open and I drop dead...

This was all in one small hour session and was a great thrillride, there was alot more I could have explored and seen but that would take far too long and be far to dangerous as I'm sure there are alot more terrifying creatures out there.

Things to improve/add:

Multiple saves - You can already do this by just copying the data folder and then deleting its contents except settings but it would make it alot easier than having to do that.

Getting around objects - I have seen various objects and such placed infront of doors and such and with no way to get around it, I think being able to climb over it or push things out of the way would be cool.

More crafting??? - I'm sure it will improve and add more but there isn't much atm anyway unless I just haven't found the right things although some things are there that I don't have but Idk.

More open worldy - Although the zone traveling does help FPS ALOT you can easily escape enemies by using zones when being chased which is a bit silly. Unless you can combat that with a sort of 'enemy nearby' system.

Mods - Of course mods 'cause why not?

Multiplayer - Although it's a big leap I think this game would be extremely good for MP as the core gameplay elements that are in the game such as lockpicking would make for some fun gameplay.

That's about all I can think of right now but my rating for this game as it is, is an 9/10.
The games concept is very unique and fun and even now I can see myself spending SO many hours in this game. Definately recommend this game!

This game has one of the best ideas ever! The only problem I have with this game is that it is very laggy. I know this is the first edition of the game and there needs to be improvements, but even with AA and VSYNC turned off and all graphical setting are at very low the game still runs very choppy. I own a Mid 2012 Mac Book Air with 8 GB of RAM along with 1.8 GHz, and sadly this game is unplayable. Hopefully in updates to come they will fix this and I will be extatic to play the game. I would recomend this game to anyone who loves a good survival simulator, I know this because I have watched reviews and gameplay of it. Overall I only played about 40 minutes and I loved the idea.
